View Full Version : Hooper and Proud
After watching Alwyn Davey chasing our players down and then the definate leg speed advantage the bombers had, i would think that Hooper and Proud's development as players is going to be vital for our club. Leg speed is just so important, with Stiller, Rischitelli, Black, Power, Hadley, Lappin (these days)etc we need to have a couple of absolute dashers to support these hard ball mid pace players. I am not advocating for these players to be picked now, but i woudl hope that both (if deserved) will be in our seniors at some stage this year. I have said this before, having seen a little bit of Proud since he was 16, i still believe he is a Michael Long clone.

I agree with you there. Alwyn davey is an amazing find for Essendon.
What number did he go in the draft?
Hooper showed signs of that brilliance last season.

Interesting for me is that Harding is supposed to be the quickest guy at the Lions but he hardly ever uses it. He needs to be shown those run downs and some tape of acker in his prime and be told this is what we expect of you son.

wow. I dind't know he was the quickest. How is that measured, is it over the 20 m?
Harding and Allan are both very poor tacklers, they both require another 2 solid years in the gym and also lots of tackling drills.

i agree in 06, but i think in 07 he has been one of our most improved players.

how has proud being going in the ressies? i must confess i dont follow the 2nds that much, spend all my passion towards the 1sts (which i guess rely on the 2nds, but dont always have the time anyway).
most of you guys seem to be pushing for schmidt to be the next debutant, does that sound fair?

I'd say so. I think he's next in line for the midfielder type players. Clark the next KPP.

Harding runs a 2.78 second in 20 mtr. I'd like to think that Proud (the pacy midfielder; like Harding) and Hooper (quciksilver tackle machine) aren't far behind.

As I understand it Merrett did well in the sprint last year and will forever thereafter be referred to as "the fastest player in the club over 20m" or if they are trying to be a little more accurate as "being one of the fastest players in the club". Not saying he isn't quick which he is but I don't think all the guys compete in these races.
As Sherm mentioned Harding flew this year and was extremely fast. My comment was that for someone with that much track pace he just doesn't seem to play fast. I am pretty sure that Hooper didn't run this year and Proud may not have as well due to injury.
I seem to recall that this year that Berger was right up there time wise and might have had the second best time. If so there would certainly be some interesting competition for the quickest ruck given that Tippett competed in the AFLQ sprint last year for his club. The slow lumbering ruck might be a thing of the past at the lions.

Apparent Merrett WAS the second fastest (don't have figure though). Scott Harding had always been fastest.
Leuenberger was recorded as 3.02 in the draft camp, but in the pre-season recorded 2.83 () to be the new second fastest.

Harding was a rookie last year so if the stat is from then which i am pretty sure it was, Merrett would've been the fastest senior listed player!

Aye that would make sense given the way it was reported.

Ahh ok, I did not know Harding is the fastest, he sure doesnt seem like it, Hooper seems faster to me.
I think Harding needs to use his run more not only when having the ball but when chasing down his player.
