View Full Version : The league Collingwood built
As the chief promoter and sustainer of the VFL for a century would we even have this great AFL competition without the most famous football club in the southern hemisphere?

Yes. Now move along.

Yes - of course you are correct.
We gladly welcome collingwood into the AFL from the suburban VFL competition where they were the big fish in the small pond.
We also gladly welcome the many $$$ that the collingwood faithful pour into the AFL so that it can be equally distributed to the 'interstate' clubs - along the way to helping us win the odd flag or two.
Let's face - now with real opposition from 'interstate' clubs with equal access to players, which in the VFL days was biased because of the sheer weight of money - you really only make up the numbers in the AFL now.
Just when will an ex-suburban VFL team team actually make an AFL grand final, let alone win one.

Eddie, is that you? I guess you've got a lot more time on your hands now that you're not at the helm of the sinking ship that is Channel 9.

Exactly. I thought the league Collingwood built was the Viclink league, which for our interstate friends is a league that the mentally handicapped and socially disadvantaged play in.

In a word, yes.
If it wasn't for the non-Victorian sides entering the competition and paying their license fees to prop up a failing suburbian league, there would be no AFL.
Without them, half of the VFL comp would have folded and you would still be playing in the tin pot competition of the VFL compaired to what you have now.
Get your hand off your snagger anzacs...

put it this way, if collingwood didn't exist then Fitzroy would have 35k+ members and be full of ferals.
