No way should Setanta be played in the ruck. Leave him where we want him to develop - as FB or CHB.

He wasn't that bad last night in the ruck, and Ackland improved on his recent performances. Starting him (Ackland) on the bench might be the kick in the guts he needs.

No i know Setanta has done agood job. But if we ar tyring to develop a player into a certain area on the ground, why chop and change it?????
He needs all the experience he can get, if we want him to be good. Why, when he is starting to find his feet as FB, does he get moved to RUCK???

Why?
Because Cloke and McLaren go down at the same time...........not Pagans fault.
O'Hailpin at 199cm is as likely as anyone and FWIW is doing quite well around the ground. Didn't really have an obvious match up for him at FF this week so we got away with it.
Aisake and Hampson not ready for AFL, though I would take a punt on Aisake ATM.
If the drought doesn't break will that be Pagans fault too?

He still gained experience from last night, experience against a very very good ruckman in McIntosh. There is nothing wrong with trying him in different positions, its handy having a bloke who's 199cm and 100kg who can play almost anywhere on the ground. :thumbsu:
I'd bet Setanta is enjoying his time in the ruck. gets to see more of the ball and go for a run.
I would have brought Asaike up last week.

wat we need the most is a monster ruckmen.. like above 205cm minimum...
There is a couple of ways we could go IMO.
Firstly, we could trade for a ruckman at years end. There are some quality ruckman out there who are not getting a game for one reason or another, and getting someone who has already been in the system for a few years could be the way to go.
Secondly, we could draft another ruckman, but not a real development player like a Hampson. Guys like Putt, McEvoy or Bellchambers should be on our list as well.
If I was Wayne Hughes, i'd be looking at mid with our first pick, and then a ruckman with our second.

Quick answer is no. No Hampson type athletes like last year. Dawson Simpson from Murray is 205cm, but nowhere near as mobile as Hampson. He did pleasantly surprise me in the recent Vic Country trial game though.
If we get a PP, choosing Kreuzer and the best mid would be a sound option.
If we don't get the PP I suspect we won't get an option on Kreuzer anyway.
A second round pick, at this stage (still a lot of water to pass under the bridge) I would presently use on a McEvoy (199cm), or Bellchambers (200cm). If they are gone by then (good chance), I wouldn't use that pick on a ruckman, but take a punt later on. Options later in the draft could be Will Sullivan (Western Jets, 202cm), James Mulligan (Qld, 201cm), Andrew Renton (Eastern Ranges, 202cm), and as HBF mentioned Dean Putt (Calder Cannons, 202cm). They latter are pretty speculative however.
So quite obviously there are a number of 200+ ruckmen running around this year. Not sure any of them have the speed of Hammo. Having said that a few of them are reasonably mobile for their height. Putt is very good below his knees for a lad of his height, but there are better tap ruckmen IMO. I haven't really seen any of them running around the ground like an Aisake, or roving their own taps, or running down opponenets from 20m away (a-la Hammo), etc....

But none of the ruckmen in the 2007 draft will be ready to play in 2008 and we have 2 great prospects in Hammo and Aisake as developing ruckmen and Jacobs as a spec.
Hammo 201 and Jacobs 200 are only 18 and have the potential to get close to the 205 mark. Hammo is very mobile and a great overhead mark, Jacobs is already 100kg and Aisake, well let me tell you that a mate of mine who is a Saints supporter watched the Antz game on ABC two weeks ago and called me to tell me how scared he was of Aisake coming into play at AFL level, in his words, the guy could revolutionise the ruck because he is so mobile and good at ground level.
So I am not worried about our long term ruck prospects, rather I identify a deficiency for the remainder of 2007 (for which there is little we can do about) and possibly a first ruck for 2008, Aisake should be able to play 22 games as 2nd ruck in 2008 and Hammo's body should be developed enough to go in 2009.
Therefore, should we really be going for a ruck (who wouldn't play for 2 years) with a high pick in the 2007 draft at the expense of adding more classy mids to our midfield rotation which we REALLY need going forward?
Wouldn't we be better off trying to trade for a ready made ruckman or looking for one in the preseason draft?
Bellchambers is the one I would be looking at with our selection in the second round. From all accounts, can go forward as well, and kicked 5 or 6 a couple of weeks ago.
However, I must agree with Gilly here. Should be get a PP prior to the first round, i'd take Kruezer, and then a midfielder with our 1st round selection.
From there on, i'd take the best available talent.
I''m very happy with our developing ruck prospects i.e. Aisake Hampson and Jacobs. Far better than what we had in the past i.e. Deluca, Batson, Bryan. Losing Cloke early, exposed our lack of ruck depth, but Setanta has stood up, and been more than servicable. The good news is that Aisake has progressed much faster than expected, and he'll definitely be making a debut this year. I don't want to recruit an average ruck for the sake of it. I'd far rather play a developing ruck in the 2nd ruck role. :)

Do you think the club will elevate him sometime soon??
Can't wait for the day when the two O'hAilpins are playing together, and can't wait for someone to try to push one of them around, only too see the other brother come in and stand tall....ooh i love a bit of biffo... and anyone that takes on these two brothers is just plain stupid :)

I think they might. Pagan already said he's close to being promoted. If he does get selected, unless he's absolutely outstanding from day 1, he'll probably only play 2-3 games. The point will be to give him exposure to the pace the the game, and tactics. Really looking forward to Aisake's debut. He moves like a much taller version of Franklin. People that have seen Aisake develop from his Irish days, rate him very highly. :)

Given that his 3 years are up on the rookie list at the end of the year, the club would have to promote him, just to see what he is like at AFL level.
You only have to look at how much Carlos has improved over the past 12 months to think what could be in store with Aisake.

Surely if he is 'better' than Setanta was at the same stage, and given that we have spent 3 years developing him, and given that he is also liekly to fill our ruck-rover role.... surely, just surely... the club will NOT Delist him at the end of the year.
Sign him for 2 years :)

Yep agree, he'll probably get few games this year and be promoted later on. Remember Setanta was rubbish in his first few games. On his debut didn't he get 1 possesion?
This year will be about exposure for him, and next year he'll be ready to smack a few blokes. Him and his brother tagteam wrestling :D

He kicked a goal with his first kick!
He wasn't that bad, it was against Richmond on one of those days they beat us by 100+ points, so hard to say.
The the mistake was made of playing him as a forward when he still hadn't quite mastered the art of kicking the oval ball...

Yeah i remember that game now, so yeah hard to say. But my point was he didn't do anything exciting at all so don't expect his brother to solve our ruck problems this year.
I'm more excited about seeing him being able to biff than playing haha

So who can tell me the rules for the long term injury list. As I understand it, Jackson got promoted for Grigg's injury and Young for Scotlands. So we can promote someone for Cloke's injury. I think they might wait until Jackson gets back from his injury because if I understand correctly, once Grigg gets back Jackson gets demoted. So then they need to decide between Jackson and Aisake for the remaining long term injury replacement. So they may want to see how Jackson goes on his return before promoting Aisake? Can anyone tell me if my understanding is correct?

Coming from a non football background there are proably 3 key areas that the Irish boys (and to a lesser extent Hammo) have to make up for lost time in. Kicking the oval ball, reading its flight and reading the play.
Setanta's development was slower because he was originally being developed as a forward, a position in which all 3 of these deficiencies were magnified he's flourished since being put into the backline. He was also hampered by a foot fracture in his second year.
Aisake is being developed as a ruck, so while he may be somewhat lacking as a link up player through the middle of the ground, he won't be as hindered when it comes to hitting out to advantage and from all reports is, like Setanta very good at ground level and very mobile, both of which he will be able to use to exploit other ruckmen.
He'll probably have to prove himself over another 1-3 weeks with the Antz but I'm hoping he gets a gig after that and I'm hoping too see some really good things in the ruck from him from the start, not just excited about him helping out in biffs!

I'd only sign him for one to be honest AWG, unless he comes into the senior team and really shows something. Could be a bit risky otherwise.
