View Full Version : Pagan States His Philosphy

Have a read of Dennis's article "Attack that they may grow" on the Carlton website. It states what the Coaching Panel is trying to achieve this year. F**k the notion of flooding, let's play attractive football and try and kick more goals than our opposition. A great philospy.
This way the Boys will learn how to play football to win a game, not just try and save it and in the meantime bore the supporters to death. We may not be winning at the moment, but we are going down fighting and look at what the kids are learning. The wins will come soon and when this happens the other Clubs better watch out, because if this side gets going for 4 quarters they will wipe the floor with the opposition.
Pagan is back into to his 1992 rebuilding mode with the Kangaroos and we are on the way. All we need is more experience and confidence in this group and the Bluebagger spirit and arrogance will be back.
Everybody get on board for the ride.:) :) :)

It's great that we're sticking to positive, attacking footy. It helps bring out the natural flair in young footballers and instills a bit of confidence in their own ability. Plus it sets the side up as the hunter rather than the hunted. The coaches deserve some praise for this.
But there'll come a time when we have to nail flooding sides, and we need to be able to respond to the tactic instead of walking into it like we have at times this year.

Well I don't think this should come as any surprise. Pagan only knows one way, and now the cattle is starting to improve they can at least kick the goals. Next step is stopping the goals being kicked against us. While we are the fifth highest scoring team, opposition teams score against us more than any other side

I'm happy with attacking style of play, but why continue with the negative game style for Russell,Walker & Gibbs.

I don't really care how we win. I just want to win

Shouldn't a Coach's philosophy be to win as many games as they can?

I agree...look at how you have to play to make the finals these days. You need to be able to both play the flood as well as break it.
I like the current game plan a lot. I just hope they are spending the time drilling some tactical skills into the team. We need to learn how to respond better to floods. Also, in the back half, we need to learn how to be more accountable and how to get the ball back into play after a kick in. These things will take a long while to drum into a young side. I hope they keep playing attacking footy as its good for development , but hope to see improvements in these areas over the next year or so...all out attack by itself just doesn't work these days it seems.
maybe this philosophy has met it's end?

"we have to make sure we not only play attacking football but also restrict and put pressure on Adelaide’s defenders and midfielders so we can help out our defence"

No one likes seeing young kids with the ability to star being given negative roles, however, a team needs taggers/defenders. The best of this type of player running around also have good skills and running ability to go with their negating ability.

why play a style that may win more games this year and not imoprove the side, thus next year we are no better. i would rather win less games this year to win more games in the future.
even if we play negative and try and win that way, we wont makee finals so we should be aiming at devoloping a game that will make and win finals over the next years.

How do you know we will win more games in future with an open gameplan when all clubs are moving the other way?
How can you say it will win finals football when the teams sitting on the top of the ladder and likely to play finals football dont play that way?

While I do prefer this way to flooding, as it does allow young players to demonstrate their natural flair, I'd like it tempered it al little to teach our young guys to be accountable going the other way. Players need all round development. I prefer 16 to 14 goal game, those are the best, to a 22 to 20 goal game. What I don't like is our players being played out of position. They get exposed in shoot-outs and does nothing for their development.
If this is the style Denis is backing then I am all for it. However lets hope that he does stick with it. Still this year I have looked down forward only to see Fev and 4 defenders. If we are going to play attacking direct footy then we must have at least 4 -6 forwards stationed in our forward half of the ground. It was fantastic the way we lined up for the forst 20mins against North. Lets leve it this way for a whole game/whole season. At least this way there may be some stability bred into the physche of our players.

All teams have negating type players, and these 3 happen to be ours at the minute. Gibbs will no doubt move up the ground, and Walker will be released as well.

This concerns me. When will this happen? Walker absolutely dominated in his first game against west coast. Was fantastic. Since that game, he was moved into defence adn it has been a different walker ever since.
He has been here for 3 years now. Surely his time is coming ??

When you have the cattle to do it.....yes.....
When you are developing a force to be reckoned with in a few years time, then build the game plan around them.....
Our young list will continue to develop, and negative/defensive football in order to win games now when there is no real chance of winning a premiership is exactly what Pagan was crucified for last year.....
At last, the coaching panel has realised the potential this club has,and the game plan is for them to play attacking/exciting football, while it's frustrating now as a supporter to watch us lose games that should be "winnable" the era is fast approaching that this young side will begin to maintain a 4 quarter effort and opposition teams will be totally and convincingly "overwhelmed" by our desperation, our attack on the ball, our fluency and quick delivery of the ball to our forward line.......
We are young, should we really be developing our players into a team that is content to play a defensive style of football,or is time for us to instill in our troops that they possess the ability to run,to attack,to play off their man and make him accountable, the potential is there, last year Pagan was criticised for not letting the boys go,this year he is criticised for doing exactly that,I think the brand of football we play is exciting,it's fast.it's attacking, and just as soon as a few of the boys "come on" that type of football is going to see us start winning games, and winning by fair old margins too......
As long as he sticks with it and it doesn't change every few months like most of his previous attempts at a 'gameplan' have. Althought I must admit that our matches are great to watch, impartial observers often tell me that the Blues are entertaining and the wins are not far away. Similar to how people spoke of the Dogs a couple of seasons back I guess.

I honestly believe that we have the list to win games now. I believe our list has the ability to finish 8-12th this year. However, that won't happen, and that's because IMO, our coaching tactics suck. I think being part of a winning culture would help our young guns more. It cant be good for players like Walker and Murphy to be losing regularly
