View Full Version : Discovering bands after the horse has bolted

With the advent of MP3’s I have been exposed to some old music (70’s & 80’) that while was popular at the time for one reason or another I didn’t get into at the time and not just confined to one genre of music.

I have really come to appreciate some older bands that mostly have split up but one is still around and going as strong as ever. I speak of:

Simple Minds – now I could never get into this band because I hated “Promised You a Miracle” when it came out and me being the stubborn teenager at the time decided that everything after that that they released (that would be the entire catalogue) was absolute tripe. How wrong I was when I recently listened to songs like “Belfast Child”, “Someone, Somewhere in Summertime”, “Waterfront” & ”Sanctify Yourself”. The latter probably being my favorite.

Bad Company – in their peak they were before my time but I never really took the time listen to them but I knew a few of their songs like “Shooting Star”,” Feel Like Makin’; Love” etc but I have now ‘discovered’ songs like “Wild Fire Woman” and “Good Lovin’ Gone Bad”.

Boston – we all know “More Than a Feeling” and back in the 80’s I bought one of their albums which I think was called “Cool The Engines” which had a balled hit called “Amanda” but before then they had great songs like “Smokin’” and “Party” and I’m sure I am just scratching the surface of their catalogue.

The Cars – ditto for this band. Didn’t like them in the 80’s but love songs like “Just What I Needed” & “Good Times Roll” now.

U2 – again another band I couldn’t get into at the time and strangely enough I only started to pay them some attention after they released “The Sweetest Thing”. Now I know a lot of you will be sitting there with your eyes rolling in the back of your heads after that statement as I’m sure most U2 fans would be able to pick out 20 songs from their back catalogue that would be better in the opinion.

Maybe I am just mellowing a bit because I used to be into the Metal scene in the 80’s and early 90’s and anything that was on commercial radio to me was garbage and I shunned it completely.

Anyone else with any similar stories like these?

Very underrated band. Check out "Don't Look Back" a brilliant song, also the "Higher Power" remix from the greatest hits CD>

Boston were Pop rock at its best, they really didnt catch on in there time but have built up a stong following with new followers
over the last 20 odd years. More than a feeling the first track is my personal favourate of the album, but the guitar work on the album gives this band an enduring quality ,so in the words of molly if you havnt heard of them, DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR.

You've got to be joking!!!

The single More than a feeling was absolutely HUGE worldwide for them. The album was just as huge.

The second album was big but didn't do as well as the first.

To say they "didn't catch on in their time" is an absolute falacy.

Please....in future, before you make a statement such as that make sure either:
1. You were around during the era
2. Have really done your research

As an aside....

Tom Scholz was considered the electronic wizkid for all things guitar during the mid 70's to the end of the 70's courtesy of his guitar sound on the first Boston album (I still have one of his gadgets).

The Cars were a sensational band - very much underated in my opinion. Unfortunantly there main vocalist lost his life last year i am led to believe.

What did they look like? Some sort of black box with his autograph in white? I seem to recall something like that.

Tom Scholz was a G.I.T graduate wasn't he?

I wasnt arguing that the single" more than a feeling" wasnt a success and there first album which given my lack of research sold 16 millon copies world wide they were not that big" here" in aus . Given that they were a very accomplashed band there next4 albums sold a total of 12 milllon from 78 to 97.

The album which Amanda was on was called Third Stage, OMH.
It took the band about 8 years between the second and third albums, but they came out with some classic music. Even the 4th album, Walk On, which never got a lot of publicity is great to listen to.

Nice to see some talk about the pomptastic Boston - album every 8 years even out does Def Leppard in the take your time stakes.

Now are there any wimptastic Journey fans here? Escape is a monster album!! So is Frontiers! All hail Neal Schon's afro! And Steve Perry's nose! Captured is one of my fave albums of all time.

Thanks Hippie, you are right. Cool The Engines was one of the tracks on the album. The funny thing about the album was the time it took to record it and I think it only had 9 tracks on it and the 1st & last track had the same music but different lyrics.
