View Full Version : Lloyd to CHF?
I have noticed the last couple of years the Matty has been working harder for his goals than ever before. At his best Lloyd beat his opponents by timing his leads(did it better than anybody) to perfection giving him a split second advantage on the full back and taking a mark with the defender trailing a metre behind.
These days due to injury and the fact that full backs now are usually explosive freaks he gets worn like a cheap suit by the time the ball is delivered. His ability to read the play to react quicker is somewhat nullified by the fact that his opponent’s closing speed gets him to the contest at the same time as Matty.
Lloyd was never a great athlete, his speed and ability to jump aren’t anything special. But he does have very good endurance and a terrific footy brain which are two good attributes of a CHF. Lloyd IMO could be great value at CHF in a straight swap for Lucas who can play just as well deep as he does higher up the ground(spent most of his junior career out of the square). Lloyds inability to gain separation on an explosive 20-30 metre lead wouldn’t be an issue as his good endurance would see him run most CHB's into the turf.
Sheeds always said Lloyd could be a great CHF and I think it is time to see if that call is right.

I perfer Lloyd FF in the goal square and running in the 50. Lucas is good in both places also, but Lloyd is a champion FF and as long as he keeps performing there, I don't see a need for change.

I agree with MArcuz and probably have had that view for a while and I agree with it more by looking at Lucas's performances lately and IMO he is beter at FF than CHF lately

Put Lucas at CHB. Strong marking and long but not necessarily accurate kicking would be perfect.

I'd say Lloyd's further up than Lucas in most games
Anyway - with Johns Gumby and Keps coming through, tall forwards aren't our biggest worry. We still are in need of a real strong centre half back who can defend as well as mark - something we've lacked for many many years. Could we see Lloyd pushed this far back, even just as a trial?

I had Lloyd as my skipper in my Supercoach side, and was disgusted with the delivery to him after his fine opening quarter. So often the ball would be put high and over his head as he had three defenders around him. Why doesn't Essendon's midfield kick to his leads anymore? He's a champion full-forward who has kicked 700 goals, instead Lucas seems to hog the ball, and poor Lloydey is sort of made a peripheral player!!
Yes, i'm dirty on his 87, which saw me score my lowest supercoach score as well, but i really though against the unpretentious Tigers, he would have been good for a 7-8 goal haul.

You're joking right? Move the league's second highest goal scorer away from the goals? As for Lloyd up the ground, he and Lucas have pretty much been tag teaming at FF so far anyway but Lloyd hasn't looked like kicking a bag this season so a permanent change (or until Lloyd gets some timing back into his leads anyway) couldn't hurt:thumbsu:

For his own preservation, Lloyd should not be playing far out from full forward.

Agree with most of what you're saying. His lack of ability to get clear on the lead has been worrying me all season, and I was hoping it had something to do with a niggling injury but I think you're spot on with the reasons.
I do think we'd lose a bit with having Lucas permanently in the square though. His ability to pump the ball long in the 50 and pass accurately when not having a shot is very damaging, as well as his ability to take a lot of marks and provide an option.
I'd just keep swapping the 2 between those FF and CHF depending on matchups.

The forward line is working well at the moment.
Lloyd at FF and Scotty at HF with a bit of rotation.
No need to tinker with the part of the game which we constantly win at.
