Hi guys, I was thinking of dropping past Shepley Oval on Saturday to see some of the Dandenong v Eastern game.

Any players I should keep an eye on?

Week 8 line ups aren't out yet, but for Dandy check out Steven Gaertner (39), 196cm and runs like the wind, big reach and wins lots of contested marks using that reach. Scott Simpson (44) is another good KPP prospect for Dandy, should line up at CHF. Russell Gabriel (45) is having a good year, sharing ruck duties with Westcott. Luke Potts (3) is probably the pick of their smalls.

For Eastern have a look at their big 200+ ruckman Renton (20), tall CHF Lobbe (23) and of the smalls, Nye (14), Sloane (4), Del Aquilla (45) and Daniel Noy (46) if they line up.

Don't think Dell Aquilla played last week. IIRC he had OP during the pre-season, has he had a recurrence of that?

And Gilly is pretty much spot on with who to look at.

You're right Macca, OP during the pre season, had a corky last week I believe, hasn't been named this week.

For Eastern add in Zomer (big hulking CHB) and Dale Walker. Walker is one of those guys you will have to have an opinion on. Great athlete and will be looked at. Renton, Lobbe, Zomer, Walker. I think Noy is hurt. Jones, White, Sloane and Nye will be BOG but probably aren't draftable.

Dandenong - Gaertner as others have said. Superfreak athlete who can't kick. (I hope they play Gaertner on Walker for the comedy double-team). John McCarty if he plays. Simpson as others have suggested. Boumann is another interesting tall. Potts v Jones (or Nye) should be a corker. Ashley Smith is also an interesting one.

The boys have hit the nail on the head although a couple are out with injuries or school footy. Wouldn't know who to tip in this - 9th v 10th on the ladder. Important four points for someone to edge into the eight and someone to slip further away.

Dandenong Stingrays

B Lee Calteri Ferraro
HB Dal Lago Gaertner Boyle
C Harley McMurray Hayes
HF Potts Boumann Rogasch
F Davis Simpson Gabriel
R Westcott Doria Clark
Int Patti Edwards Gillies
Lourey Sienkiewicz Cain
O'Sughrue McGill

Eastern Ranges

B Walker White McDonald
HB Walshe Zomer O'Reilly
C Ward Jones Preston
HF Cunningham Lobbe Mollica
F Dixon Campbell Brown
R Renton Sloane Nye
Int Ellis Shiels Osborne
Gordon Cass Barnes
Mazurek Purcell

Eastern I think had four 16 year olds (ie players born in 1991) play last weekend, looking at their bench they may well go in with the same number again. Good experience for those blokes to be involved in the system at such a young age.

Eastern have been playing 16 year olds early for a couple of seaons now without really paying dividends.

I am struggling to see why they have so little depth. They have a fairly small list again this season. I would have thought they were in a fairly strong region and could be carrying an extra 10 17-18 years olds. Eastern struggles these past couple of seasons are a concern for me. Western makes sense because of their zone - but Eastern should be putting together stronger lists IMO.

Great summary Gilly.
Looking forward to seeing the game tomorrow. Am going to take particular notice of Gaertners kicking.

I think Dandy are finding some form and I like them for this game. Could get down to the conditions, if it is blustery and wet it might bring Eastern into the game a little more. If conditions are good, Dandy might have too many tall weapons.

Zomer goes ok down back, as Weaver said he is a bit "hulking" and his pace worries me a little. I think Sloane may be worth taking a punt on with a later pick, will have an eye on him. I think Gaertner's kicking woes are a little over-exaggerated, and a lof of it has to do with the fact that a kid of 196cm has no right to be carrying the ball with such speed anyway  . I hope he lines up at CHB this week and plays a bit more of a traditional KPP role as opposed to that roving wing/running the ball out of defense role. Lobbe vs. Gaertner match up would be interesting :)

Saw Eastern a few weeks ago. Thought they were a were strong marking side who were a lot better than their position on the ladder. The player who impressed me the most that day was number 31 - Dixon. He played at full back that day and was very effective defending both the lead and in a stationary contest...

Number 5 (Jones) was very a very useful midfielder, 11 (Campbell) a good target as a Hff, and 28 (Mollica) a clever type hff who did some useful things. 42 (Cunningham) played on a wing and won a lot of the ball.

Agree with an earlier poster that number 4 (Sloane) shows something, but seemed to be more effective as a forward than as a midfielder.

I haven't seen Dandenong yet.

Some quick observations,
Dandenong.
Gaertner, incredible athleticism but kicking is certainly an issue. I am sure someone will gamble on being able to improve this deficiency
Boumann, love his hands but doesn,t present or find the footy often enough.
Simpson, very impressive, seems a natural footballer and will get a chance at a higher level.
Potts, has no trouble finding the footy but once again query his ability to kick with penetration.
Gabriel, doesnt assert himself in the air and terrible when it hits the deck. No thanks.
Rogash, noticed him late. very neat left footer.
Eastern,
Lobbe, best of the big men, mobile enough and should be taken as a work in progress.
Renton, named in the best players but i thought struggled, looked a lumbering type.
Zomer, once again a fine athlete but needs plenty of football tuition especially in the kicking department.
Campbell, liked him, very lively, a chance.

Would have thought Nye's game would have been worth a mention. BOG by the length of Flemington Straight, however, at 174cm, he'd be a rookie selection at best.

Just on Gaertner though, I have to agree with Gilly here. His kicking seems pretty sound to me, and I tend to think that some posters on here are making this into an issue when there isn't one. My issue with him is that he appears quite timid, and he just needs to back his ability and take game by the horns.

Sure his kicking looks sound enough it's just the results of the kicks that keep everyone banging their heads against the wall.:D

But his technique is sound, if you ask me. When you're 196cm, and can run like him, you are going to have a few floaters, some that go straight up, and others that just miss the target. This could be a matter of him steadying before he gets into his kicking action, or just guiding the ball for a split second longer.

There are just too many things to like about him not to take a punt on him come draft time.

Agree totally, don't take what I said as in I don't like him. He's probably the best athlete I've seen take a footy field and he's got plenty to work with. I just want to see him on a wing at the champs, but I don't think it will happen.

I commented on Saturday that he has Lance Franklin written all over him. Imagine what clubs would do to get another Franklin on their list.

If you had seen his game against Geelong the week before you wouldn't have questioned his courgage he took 2 marks that any AFL player would be proud of including Archer and Brown.

He was injured in the 1st quarter but still played on.

Injured in the 1st quarter of the Geelong game or the Eastern one? Also what injury did he have?

Cheers.

I have heard he had a sore shoulder after 1/4 time against Eastern on the weekend. Makes sense, as he went out of the game from that point on.

Considering he stayed on the ground after 1/4, i'm sure he'll be fine for the champs. Wonder if he'll turn up for the trial on the weekend?

Disagree Snoop.

Thats fair enough - his kicking certainly seems to divide opinion. I dont disagree he will go high - he will. I mentioned a while ago that I think he is very akin to a young Adam Goodes when he started. Goodes kicking improved in 2-3 yrs albeit he can still helicopter the odd one. Young kids that are taller and have or are growing quickly can have problems with their drop and I would imagine clubs are not to concerned.
