Johnson's troublesome injury has worsened and Matthews is unsure when the versatile premiership player will return.
"It's really troubling him now," Matthews said.
"What that means in terms of time frame, I don't know."

Plantar fasciitis is the word. As opposed to grease, which was previously thought to be the word.
... and in the beginning was the word and TFB suggested the word to be plantar fasciitis.
Would this be the same word as the Robert Harvey jumping off a table onto his (stretched) plantar fascia to try to rip it to cure his plantar fasciitis? I also have heard (SEN) Prestigicomo has a similar to CJ.

He didn't train last Wednesday, apart from stationary drills.

Johnson back for Lions 'in 3-4 weeks'
June 4, 2007 - 2:59PM
Brisbane Lions co-captain Chris Johnson should return from a recurring foot problem in "three to four weeks", according to coach Leigh Matthews.
However, Matthews said he didn't know when classy midfielder Luke Power (corked thigh) and small forward Ashley McGrath (knee) would return for the Lions.
There were fears for veteran Johnson's long-term playing future when he aggravated his foot condition - plantar fasciitis - during a tackle in the first quarter of Saturday night's AFL draw with Richmond.
However, Matthews remained upbeat on Monday about Johnson's chances of returning in the near future.
"He won't play for a little while. I think they (medical staff) were thinking three to four weeks," he said.
"He's been troubled with that for months on both feet.
"That's why we have rested him here and there but he damaged it on the weekend."
But Matthews admitted Brisbane were no closer to learning when Power and McGrath would come back for the Lions.
Power pulled out of the Richmond clash at the last minute while McGrath - who has kicked 20 goals for the Lions this season - has been hampered by a knee complaint.

While the selection of McGrath - who has finally recovered from a knee injury - and attacking midfielder Proud is exciting news for Brisbane, the Lions have been brought back to earth by the sobering reality that nobody knows when co-captain Johnson will return from a foot complaint.
"Chris Johnson hasn't really got a timeframe really, at this point," Matthews admitted.
"I don't think anyone said to me whether he'll be available in two weeks, four weeks, six weeks - I'm not sure."
Also on the injured list is classy midfielder Luke Power (corked thigh) and young forward Mitch Clark (quad).
Both are expected back in two weeks when Brisbane returns from an AFL bye.

I think sometimes if there's major tendon damage it can be quite a setback, although I wouldn't think 9 weeks. Maybe he's got a few warning signs of OP or some other niggle that means it's best to rest him.

That's great news. We finally get a time he might play. Hope all goes well for him.
Sam Sheldon's fracture is a bit of a concern. When he first injured it was seen as a 4-6 week period, but now is still a couple of weeks away.
What was the original fracture exactly? If it's like a serious one then it's understandable, but if it's something more like Clark's bruised/chipped fibula at the start of the year then it shouldn't take as long.

Sheldon was in a full on cast, etc while Clark was just on crutches - i always thought the initial diagnosis was optimistic.
Yes, listed as 2 - 4 weeks 5 weeks ago...and still listed as 2 weeks now...hmmm...

Ahh ok, although it's not uncommon for a major fracture and a small fracture to both receive the full cast. Earlier in the year I spent a little bit of time in fracture clinic and yeah, it was pretty much slap the cast on for everybody, unless they refused treatment.

Thanks for the insight - I think Brisbane are usually optimistic with listed injury weeks publicly...i can't remember the last time a player came back more than expected but we have plenty who take longer.

A few interesting ones - Scotty looks like getting his comeback/farewell game , Corrie may play a few reserves games, Johnson and Sheldon still a while off:mad: and worst is that Tyler is now indefinite!! Why was Harding replaced (with Begley)? I thought they couldn't use the emergencies unless there was an injury.

I think he played for Suncoast on the weekend.
CJ certainly did play on Sunday with SC. I may be wrong, but I could swear I also saw J. Hawksley on the field - if not, he was a look-alike.
Why was Harding replaced (with Begley)? I thought they couldn't use the emergencies unless there was an injury.
Last year or the year before there was a bit of a stink when one of the Melbourne sides replaced a team member with an emergency for reasons of "team balance" (that's what was quoted on the team lists on the day). If memory serves, they replaced a tall with a runner due to heavy rain or something similar... Don't know why Harding was left out though.

BRISBANE LIONS – Tenth
Matches missed by players in 2007: 242
Average listed players absent per round in 2007: 11.52
2007 listed players missing last round: 15 – Marcus Allan (ankle), Daniel Bradshaw (knee), Jamie Charman (calf), Josh Drummond (leg), Ben Fixter (groin), Pat Garner (knee), Scott Harding (knee), James Hawksley (finger), Rhan Hooper (suspended), Joel Macdonald (ill), Ashley McGrath (arm), Jason Roe (suspended), Matt Tyler (hamstring), Michael Voss (retired) and Haydn Kiel (shoulder).
The season: No club in the competition has suffered more missed matches this season than Brisbane. The Lions have had double-figure absentees every round this season, except in three consecutive weeks when they had nine unavailable players in rounds seven, eight and nine. In many respects, it has been an outstanding effort by the Lions to push for a berth in the top eight.
Now: Joel Patfull (collarbone) now joins Bradshaw, Garner, Harding, Hawksley, McGrath, Tyler and Kiel on the sidelines for the rest of 2007. Charman and Drummond face fitness tests for the final round of the home-and-away season, yet Roe is available after a one-match suspension. If the Lions are to make the finals, they now need to win and rely on several results falling their way in the final round.

I knew our injury situation weren't great, but to top the league in most games missed due to injury for the second year running yet still come within touching distance of the finals (and may yet make it) is truly an amazing go.
At least most of these guys (apart from knee reco's) should be able to do a proper pre-season, as long they don't injure themselves again doing grocery shopping etc.

Good question, in fact you wonder if the players would even report half the injuries they do in pre-season if it was the real stuff.
It's ashame cause I know a lot of Essendon fans are going to be there from around Qld but by the looks of the teams both are fielding it won't be the classiest game.

Injury watch off to another ripper start this year...
Don't have any inside knowledge about this situation, but my son, who is an experienced physio, tells me something has to be wrong when so many are injured so early before truly competitive action.
Last year, when we were in a similar, maybe even slightly better position, I was so teed off that I emailed the CEO with my concerns, basically putting the point that it was all very well having all this talent, but not much good if they're not on the paddock, and how come other clubs, eg especially the Sydney Swans, have a routinely much lower incidence of injury. Naturally I didn't get a response.
The Lions operate a multi $ operation, with leading edge spending in many departments, so much so that in the past the BIG D had to clamp down on a number of innovations- blood transfusions, etc. I've never read about any complaints about lack of money in the footy department, at any rate, unlike some of the Melbourne clubs (see TJ's remarks about training facilities here by comparison to MFC))
All very well having excellent footy department resources, but having a full list, or close to it, is a pretty good starting point, success-wise.
No club in a contact sport can avoid injury, it goes without saying. There won't have been much contact to this point, presumably, so count that one out.
All in all, without getting too down, IMO this list looks like a pretty devastating start to the season!!
That list has more groins than a porn flick :(

Heard Rischitelli on SEN yesterday - he said that he wouldn't be playing this weekend (is staying in Brisbane) because he has a slight knee injury. He didn't sound as if it was too serious, and suggested that he was just a week or two off playing.
