SYDNEY Swans coach Paul Roos says he is disappointed with the direction that football is going, likening the game’s progress to Gaelic football.

Roos was speaking after the Swans’ one-point loss to Essendon at the SCG, during which several contentious umpiring decisions and rule interpretations angered the vocal home crowd.

“Where the laws of the game are heading with the game is that it will probably resemble the international rules or gaelic football and we’re just going to have to get used to it,” Roos said.

“It’s not going to be something everyone will enjoy or like but that’s the reality of what we’re faced. It’s just going to be a changing landscape in football. We’re seeing it at the start of this year and we’ll see it. Who knows what other changes to the rules that they’ll make?”

An obviously frustrated Sydney crowd booed Essendon skipper Matthew Lloyd as he received the Marn Grook trophy at the end of the clash.

“It’s really disappointing for the game itself… I think the fans really responded… there’s an enormous amount of frustration and I think the 30,000 people who were here tonight showed that… I haven’t heard a crowd in Melbourne react like that, never mind in Sydney,” Roos said.

Roos believes the rule changes are most frustrating for young kids starting out and learning how to play the game.

“I was at a kids’ carnival during the week and it’s filtering down to that level,” he said.

“At the carnival you’ve got frustrated 12-year-old kids, frustrated parents but it’s just the way the AFL wants the game to go so it’s just a matter of us all getting used to it otherwise we’re all going to be talking about it after every single game.”

Roos fears that the new rules and changing landscape of AFL will, in turn, mean that some people may cease their involvement due to frustration.

“We’re not allowed to talk about decisions or umpires. Let’s just get used to it because that’s what we’re faced with. It’ll happen this week, it’ll happen next week, it’ll happen the week after… it’s probably a case of it we don’t like it, we’ll just have to go and do something else,” he said.

“They’re probably will be some people that will get turned off the game. That’s where it’s going.

“I think what it’s affecting is what we remember football as. I don’t think it affects individual players more than others.

“What we’re seeing now is that it’s going to affect a whole generation of footballers, the next young kids that are playing now will become different players to what we’re actually seeing at the moment. That’s just the way it is.”

Waa waa waa. Think of the children for heaven's sake!!

I like it how he said the Sydney crowd booing was because of them not liking some of the rule interpretations. No, they booed because they lost! They are a Sydney crowd, they don't understand the rules!!

Booing someone accepting a trophy is some of the worst sportsmanship. :thumbsd:

Roos ,how come your team uses blocking tactics more than any other team ? You flood constantly ! You go to the boundary more often than not .You recruited Everitt to help you win the grand final this year ( and hes old ) Your young up and coming players are so weak your club will fall in a massive playing hole when your senior players retire in 3 yrs or so .I bet you leave then , leaving the club in player trouble ,
You and members of your club moan and groan if you lose ,face the facts you are on a downward trend .Blame yourself , the recruiters and certain players in your club .

We need 4 boundary umps ,the world knows this except the AFL commission .
The hands in the back rule has always been there ,its just being more enforced than ever before .Its about time the backs didnt scrag the fwds .Its now an even playing field and you dont like it ,why not ?

Roos is way off beam and blowing a deliberate smokescreen here.
"Let's get everyone focused on the umpires, the rules, the controversies and hopefully no will notice Sydney's poor start to the season".

Nice one, Roosy! You lose to Essendon at the SCG and you're under the pump at 5-5.
So what do you do? What any coach does, of course, you BLAME THE UMPIRES.

And for what it's worth, the coaches have stuffed up the game.

Not the umpires.

Not the rules committee.

Not the AFL.

People said how great it was when Sydney won in 2005, good for the game, etc. I remember saying back then, that what it meant was that 15 other coaches were now going to emulate aspects of Sydney's gameplan and drop numbers back behind the ball and concentrate on defense at the expense of entertaining the crowds.

What does a missed call by the boundary ump have to do with the rules anyway?

The crowd were booing because like most crowds, they prefer to blame the umpires rather than admit their team was outplayed.

Will the Swans finish top four in 2007? Maybe their luck is turning for the worse. They would've won this game in 2005 or 2006.

Roos is the master of uncontested football. Why does he care that the rule takes out contests?

He has a point though, the game has become soooo soft now.

Demetriou and Anderson have a lot to answer for.

A game for soft cocks now.

roos saying its becoming like gaelic footy? wasnt he that took the reigns of eade the king of the flood and utlisied it in 05 for them to win the flag. i dont know if theres flooding in gaelic footy but beside against us, sydney dont play very attractive footy. (remember the adelaide vs sydney game. enough said).

all teams have whingers and im stick to death of it including from my side. a games a game, move on. if it was the gf you may have a legit cause. sydney shouldnt have let essendon get away at the start at home. about time they play their good footy so we can have our finale at the end of the year.

"......30,000 people....."

Roosy, your rubbish ground does not hold that many people. There were only 26,000 who could fit in there.

Roos and Sydney fans in general always whinge when their god-given right to scrag opposition teams out of the game isn't upheld.

You've won one flag since Hitler ruled Germany. I'm amazed you even know what a premiership is.
