We played crap football today

5) Kerr (just about the only bloke on the ground who deserved thier votes)
4) Cousins (made loads of unforced errors but tried hard all day)
3) Taylor (as with Cuz)
2) Judd (showed the blokes how to use the football)
1) Jones (well I can't think of too many others)

We played reactive football all day (very slow reaction at that) they shouldn't whait until they're 5 goals down before they decide that they actually want to play some half decent football.

I'm very disapointed in the boys today, I was expecting a much better effort than that.

5. Kerr - 27 possesions and 2 goals. Worked hard all day.
4. Cousins - Started slowly but still managed 24 possesions and a goal.
3. Jones - tried all day but that shot on goal in the last qrt was terrible!
2. Judd - 2 goals were handy and got quite a few possies.
1. Wirrpunda - like Cousins, started slowly but came back into the game.

If you look at most of the people getting the votes today you will see they are all midfielders! Even in a game where our midfield struggled a little, our best players were still the midfielders.

Gardiner had a shocker as did Jakovich, Embley, Wilson & McIntosh. The only talls I was even in the least bit impressed with were Gaspar who tried hard all day and should have got two more possesions after blatant pushes in the back from Nicholson and Glass who after getting beaten early when Nietz was on fire, managed to quieten him down.

Not too many good performances today, so it's quite hard.
But anyway:

5) Dan Kerr:
Getting back to his best.
Won plenty of the ball in congestion, and was tough and hard all day.

4) Chris Judd:
What a talent. Backs himself at every opportunity and his pace is unbelievable. Always uses the ball brilliantly as well.

3) Peter Matera:
Very classy, and still can do some magic things out on the field. Very smart player.

2) Ben Cousins:
Got to give the guy credit. Ran himself to the point of exhaustion, and tried his heart out all day. Taggers seem to be getting under his skin a bit more this season.

1) Wirrpunda:
Got a vote simply because his first and last quarters were so fantastic.
Pity he can't run out an entire match. Hopefully his fitness improves through the year.

My votes;

5)- Kerr - brilliant effort - went in hard all day - should have started on the ground

4) Peter Matera - still has a lot to offer and has brilliant skills - we will miss him in the next few years.

3) Judd - did well again for a 3rd gamer - some magnificent passages of play is a great ball winner. Will keep getting better.

2) Cousins - after being tagged well in the first half he ran himself ragged.

1) Wirra - started in a blaze, disappeared for q2, q3 but stood up in the last and his goal under heavy pressure was great

Worth a mention, Chambers, Jones (skills :( . effort ) :) , Brauny tried hard when he was on.....

I really thought we could win this one....:( :(

Funny you say that Brauny tried hard. I personally thought that he played a really bad game, alonside Banfield. Might be being a bit harsh on him without seeing the replay again but I was quite disappointed today with Braun. Chambers looks to have improved this year. He has good skills, runs hard and has a handy mark. Needs to man-up a bit more though, but then again, so does the whole team.

2 - Chris Judd
1 - Callum Chambers

Wirrapunda started brilliantly then got benched for extended periods of the 2nd and 3rd quarters... any reasons why??

Kerr and Matera brilliant, Cousins really lifted in the second half, the main problem with him is that he's become a major target of oppositions teams. Judd played well in patches and his confidence in himself is great to watch. The last vote was a toss up between Jones and Chambers. The only reason it went to Chambers was because of that attempt to play on by Jones in the last quarter. (Chambers had an ok game too ;) )

You're probably right about Brauny Vis,

Early on he did some great 1% smothers, tackles but he did go missing - I thought he was on the bench but maybe not.

We were killed in the midfield today and the Dees had way too much running - Powell and Yze were brilliant for them.

Kerr,Cuz, Judd were great so I guess that leaves Fletch (bad game) and Brauny, as the ones to pick up the slack.

Cheers!

5: Kerr - Brilliant effort
4: Wirrpunda - Was fantastic, unfortunately the stupid rotation thing limited his impact
3: Judd - Did well when he got the ball, maybe a bit overconfident sometimes but will learn from his mistakes
2: Cousins - Everytime he got going he came off under the blood rule, did well nevertheless
1:Roo - Got a fair bit of the ball, used it pretty well, and really got under the skin of the opposition. Still very valuable to the team, should probably play on in 2003.

IMO, no forward of defender deserves a mention or a vote. Their display was pathetic. Woosha should look at bringing Green, Prior, Siera or Carroll in.

It pains me to have to give votes to the midfield rotation players when we lost the game because we were beaten in midfield, but that's the way it is. Jones and Taylor and even Wirra were probably equally deserving of being in the votes too.

It's a funny old game.

If I were voting

Kerr
Roo
Jako
Jones
Wirrapunda

Okay, Jako didn't get many possessions but when on Schwartz he blanketed him and the same on Neitz in second half.( I can't give Neitz credit for his 6th goal as Jako did not infringe for that free).

Judd is brilliant but needs to work on the defensive side of his game. After two shoulder recons I can understand him not going in too hard but in time he's going to need to do so.

Hate to go along with the crowd but there are only about 8 players who really deserve votes.....

5 - Daniel Kerr - 27 disposals and 2 goals...would have been the best midfielder on the ground if not for Powells game.

4 - Ben Cousins - 24 disposals and really turned it on after half time. Kicked a great goal in the second half, started off half back, broke the lines, linking up with team mates and then slotting it through from 45 out.

3 - Peter Matera - kicked two goals and at times did some mercurial things in the midfield. When he had the ball, something good seemed to happen for the Eagles.

2 - Rowan Jones - had 19 possesions, kicked a goal and had 6 tackles....worked hard all day and deserved a couple of votes, but next time Jones, just go back and kick the goal.

1 - David Wirrpunda - was a toss up for the last vote between Wirrpunda and Judd. Thought Wirrpunda was fantastic in the 1st and 4th quarters, Judd was steady all day. Wirrpunda kicked late goals and added a bit of class in the end stages of the game.

Judd & Chambers missed out.

Was at the game yesterday. Problem is that Optus Oval is such a crappy stadium, and sitting with the cheer squad you can only see the half of the game played on your side of the ground. (For example, didn't know Nietz had kicked 6 goals, because he kicked them all at the opposite end.)

My votes:

5. Kerr (bog for the eagles by a mile)
4. Callum Chambers (I thought he did quite well in 2 and 1/2 quarters or so he played, including quite a good goal. The kid has only played 24 games, and speaking with him at the aftermatch I get the impression that he stills feels a bit unsure. I reckon that if he keeps playing as he is now he can become a really important player for us.)
3. Ben Cousins (2nd highest possesion getter for us, and tried hard all day.)
2. Chris Judd (some dashes of brilliancy. will get better 'n better with time and experience.)
1. Gaspar (mainly because of his brilliant snap goal.)

Quite a good match to watch. Saw a few bigfootyites on the replay!!
To be honest the Eagles didnt play that badly. Reall it was only about 12 minutes of the match where the Eagles were out of it....about 6 minutes in the 2nd quarter where Melbourne kicked 3-4 goals quickly, and 6 minutes in the last when Melbourne did the same thing. Other than that the Eagles definatly matched Melbourne for most of the game. They fought back well.
It was hard to find votes for players....their werent many consistent performers thruout the match which made it difficult but this is what i came up with:

5) Kerr - A great game. Showed his 2001 form this match and was by far the eagles best performer. Won a lot of the ball and used it well.

4) Glass - Just snuck in for 4 votes. I thought his game was supurb for the second week in a row. He beat Neitz in the first quarter before being moved onto Schwarz at the start of the second and Schwarz had about 3 kicks for the rest of the match. Glass ran off schwarz a few times as well. I like this kid...i reckon he can play

3) Peter Matera - did some great things in the second half. Had a quiet first half but came into the match in the 2nd and set up a few Eagles goals

2) Judd - Eagles second best midfielder on the day and this guy just continues to show why he was a top 4 draft pick. He oozes confidence (i just love how he backs his ability and runs like mad) and he kicked 2 great goals. They might as well give him the Rising Star award now!!

1) Wirrpunda - snuck in for a vote because of his two great goals in the last quarter.

others i wrote down:
Williams - started well but really fell out of the game after 1/4 time
Cousins - had a average game...came into the game in the last half but he was too quiet for me to find a vote for him
Jones - i thought he ended up having a fine game

Macca ill add your votes but watch the game again sometime during the week and tell me if you still think Glass deserved 4 votes. Dont get me wrong, we think the kid can play aswell and will be the rock of our defence in years to come but McIntosh actually played on Neitz in the first quarter before going off. Only then was Glass switched onto him. Then Neitz kicked 5 goals on Glass and he was then replaced by Jako. Jako tamed him from there on out.

Although i thought Glass had a good game and once moved off Neitz, did the job on Schwarz but i just thought that second quarter was where we lost the game. Not all Glass' fault as the delivery was good and not much pressure from our midfielders but it still hurt us.

He was alright and just missed out on a vote from me but im not sure about 4 votes? But each to there own and ill add your votes.

Glass and Gaspar should have been nowhere near the votes. They both had shockers. I have to question Williams getting a vote as well. Didn't do much when he got the ball.

TheRealBuzz
22 Apr 2002, 13:55
Andrew Williams did nothing.
Plus his opponent Clint Bizzell ran off him all day and gave the Demons strong run offf half back.

I don't think Glass was that bad.
It was only for a ten minute period in the second quarter when the ball was being pumped down there so fast, it didn't give any defender a chance.
Before that he kept Green quiet, and after that he killed Schwarz.

Neitz had 2 goals when Glass was moved off him and Jackovich moved on him. Mcintosh went off in the first 5-10 minutes. I thought Glass played great on Schwarz...and did ok on Neitz for a bit before he got on top. Glass also set up a few attacks forward which is why i thought he got the 4 votes...i thought baout it for a while, and he just snuck ahead of matera and judd. Was very close between those 3 for who would get 4-3-2 votes.
I could ask you the same thing about how you couuld give Cousins 4 votes? But its all opinionated...we all see things from different perspectives and thats the glory of football!!!

Glass did have a few forays forward, which he usually doesnt do. His disposal for once also wasnt that bad. I always have my heart in my mouth when Glass has the ball....

On Cuz...i thought his second half alone was worthy of some votes, he was missing in the first half which was disappointing but i thought he played so well in the second half that he and Kerr kept us in the match when it seemed like Melbournes midfield was all over us. He also kicked a very good goal...broke the lines and ran very hard and finished well.
