View Full Version : Is the Bulldogs No-Tall-KP-Forward Gameplan flawed?

Watching Johnson their lone “KP forward” today, who stands about 183cm, reminded me a lot of the 2006 Bulldogs Subi finals disaster. The Bulldogs have no quality tall KP forwards. None. When they needed to stand up today, all they could do was to move Darcy and several spare midsized players into the forward line. By contrast the Blues had Fev, Lance, Waite and Fisher, all providing headache for the Bulldogs defence i.e. tall KP forward talent. Eade seems convinced that his midsized-player-only-chip-kick-gameplan will be successful. But today, like late last season, it unravelled in spectacular fashion when a little pressure was applied. :)

Yeh i think it is. I think they should just bring in McDougal, he kicked 3 or 4 in the first quarter playing in the VFL, he got taken off after the 1st quarter and then moved into the ruck later. So i think they should stick him at FF or CHF and see what he's got, because I was impressed with what i saw from him and im not sure why they arn't using him in the seniors at the moment.

I don't rate McDougall, but it's certainly worth a try. But it's not just a question of lack of tall quality KP forwards, but more about shortcomings of Eades forward line structure. The Bulldogs look fantastic when they are allowed to chip kick their way deep into the forward 50, and convert. But this strategy falls apart in games when the ball is heavily contested, like yesterday, and of course finals footy e.g. the 2006 Subi finals disaster. The Bulldogs seem desperate not to kick it to a contested situation in the forward 50. Having quality tall KP forwards, that can win one-on-one's most of the time, is essential for success in pressure games. Eade's going around blaming all his players for their loss yesterday, when he really should have a good hard look at his own short-sighted, flawed tactics. It will take another solid year of failure before Eade wakes up I suspect, or are the Bulldogs just content to be "there abouts", rather than ever being a serious contender. :)

We often win the contested marks count, not by much, but we're up there.

McDougall kicked 6 for Werribee this week, he should be back. As long as the desire is there with Doogs, he'll do well.
