On one of the other threads the Rising Star nominees was raised.
Who have been the weekly nominees from the Swans, in the last 5 years?
Should we have more?
Heaps of other clubs (it seems) have the weekly nominees and not the Swans.
Is this a problem?
(I know Goodsey was a weekly nominee and won the outright honour, a number of years ago)

You actually have to PLAY youngsters for them to get a nomination.

Thats a point.
The way we bring our players through they usially serve a long apprentiship before they get some consistant game time, therefore you wont see to many of our kids featuring in the nominees, I cant remember too many Eagles in the last couple of years either for that matter.
Did Grundy get a nomination? He had a good start in 2006.
No to Grundy. He played a fantastic debut but never really hit those heights again. Though last week I watched a tape of the first half of last year's second Bombers game and he was super in that.
Schneider got one after his Anzac Day game against the Dees and finished fourth in the voting, I think.
Bevan also finished fourth in his year, 2004.
LRT got one. Kennelly got one.
And that's about it.

Yeah I had a feeling Grundy didn't get one. But he was about the only player I thought we have had come close in a while.
I didn't realise Bevan came fourth in 2004. He had a good season that year. Played about every game. And I remember he won a game for us against Carlton with a couple of important late goals, too.

Thanks SW
I know we have had heaps of finals appearances and 2005 glory.
We are past round 4 in season 2007, so no one for 3 years, or put another way, close to 70 weeks of home and away football we haven't had ONE nominination. Is this a problem?

Yep - but unlike fans of Carlton and Hawthorn, we have been able to enjoy real success for the last couple of years, not high draft picks and RS nominations.
The players who win the award have almost all gone on to become very good players in the long term. But plenty of nominees haven't gone on with it, so it's not a great guide to the future. Don't think any of us care much that Malceski, O'Keefe or Buchanan - to name three - missed out.

This is how I look at he Rising Star thing too. There just isn't the same interest in the younger players for Sydney as there is for equivalent players for Victorian clubs.
ps: Goodes was the only one that actually was noticed enough to win the Rising Star in 99
