From the KNAC website.
As reported by The Seattle Times.
A body was removed last night from the University District residence of Layne Staley, lead singer and guitarist for the Seattle grunge band ALICE IN CHAINS. KOMO-TV, citing an unidentified source, said the body was that of Staley, 34.
A King County medical-examiner's investigator said his office removed a body from the Staley address and planned an autopsy today, but he refused to confirm the identity of the person. He said it appeared the person had been dead for some time and would have to be identified scientifically.
Staley had a history of substance abuse, and in the early 1990s publicly acknowledged an addiction to heroin.
ALICE IN CHAINS, formed in Seattle in 1987, was part of the early '90s heyday of grunge. The band was mentioned in the same breath as NIRVANA and SOUNDGARDEN.
The band's debut album, "Facelift", was released in 1990, and the song "We Die Young" became a top-5 metal track.
In 1991, the band was nominated for an American Music Award for Favorite Heavy Metal Artist.
The band's last release was Nothing Safe — Best Of The Box in 1999.
Staley also fronted the side band MAD SEASON.
Fans last night were already mourning Staley's death on bulletin boards on music sites.
One wrote: "You were an amazing man Layne a tortured soul, but a loved one. Wherever you are, I hope you feel how much you and your music meant to your fans. Rest in peace."
:( Just continues what has been a very bad year in the music world with the people that have been lost to us recently.
That is such sad news. Staley was an amazing artist.
I can pin point the time when I first heard Alice In Chains. Everyone I knew was right into them when the whole grunge thing was peaking and I can remember being strangely drawn to their music.

Terrible news. :( Alice In Chains along with Mudhoney are one of the bands who took grunge to the people. I'll make sure my grunge Rage special gets a run tonight - some killer Alice In Chains tracks. :(

Tragedy...:(
AIC were the ONLY band from the 'grunge' scene I ever liked.
He had a great voice, wrote great lyrics, but reading those lyrics always made me think something like this might happen....
Smack is evil sh it.

Mad Season is a fantastic album. One of my faves as well. I didn't like AIC nearly as much as that album.
Sad loss, although i can't say i'm suprised. :(
Now let's hope Stone Temple Pilots make it here before Scott Weiland walks the same path.....

Whilst it is sad to see another wasted life, I never thought much of AIC as a band. I always thought they tried to bring too much of a rawk sound into grunge at a time when grunge was suposed to stand against everything rawk stood for. Not a bad band, but I just didn't get into them as much as other bands.
ps. Pearl Jam were the worst perpetrators of this rock into grunge thing. They killed it off bigtime.

I don't get your point to be honest. Rock was all about the hair and spandex at that juncture in time.
Was AIC and PJ about the hair and Spandex? No. Just the music!
Soundgarden and AIC were more metal anyway!!
PJ more rock.
Nirvana more punk.
But they were all "grunge"! Just chose your preferred style!!
We need a revolution against all these fricken Tripple M bands and we need it NOW!

Ill gladly give $1000 to anyone thats willing to kill the members of Matchbox 20!!! :D
I hear ya about Matchbox 20 ... they called their album " Mad Season" wich as you can imagine annoys the bejesus outta me as everytime you tried to d/load Mad Season ( the Band ) off Napster you got a million matches for their peices of drivel passed off as music.....as everyone who posted here is of good music taste do your best to get a hold off Mad Season "Above" Layne on Vocals Mike McCreedy ( pearl Jam ) drummer from Screaming Trees and Barret Strong (also deceased) great album more "bluesy??"( help me out here gPhonque !!) ...or D/load their song " River of Deceit".........definitely amazed that Scott Weiland outlived another ....and Elton John still lives....no justice

Pearl Jam were NEVER grunge, plus I said musically not attitude when referring to AIC, it's my opinion and I stand by it.
Gotta agree about MMM though, actually you can almost throw in JJJ too.

How about "smacky??" :D :(
It's a very moody album. Even the heavier stuff is really kinda sparse.
It's an awesome album.
As much as it was unlikely, i always held onto hopes of one day once again hearing Lane and Jerry singing those magic harmonies together on something new.
As much as it was a disgrace of a tour, i'm just glad i got to see them live at Festering Hall with Suicidal.
R.I.P Lane. Didn't respect the H habbit, but **** your band were truly awesome and one of a kind and you were a big reason for that.

****, I can't beleive someone would tak the time and trouble to have a go at another band like Pearl Jam in a thread about a great man, Layne, passing away.
Grow up.
Great muso and very original. But unfortunately it didn't surprise me in the slightest he's had the problem since about 94 and it amazes me he lived this long.
Will be missed.
Now god get rid of someone useless like all the boy bands out there + Elton John for bragg
I wonder if the world was finally rid of Elton John...would his hair continue to live on if it was fed and walked every day ??

It kinda hit me tonight as I was watching an old Rage video I taped last year. It was a Pearl Jam/grunge special, with bands like Mudhoney, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone, etc. - and of course Alice in Chains.
No Excuses and I Stay Away came on, and the opening lyrics from No Excuses kind of struck me harder than usual...
"It's alright, there comes a time, got no patience, search for peace of mind" :(

Give it a rest mate, he was hardly a great man. You need to get out more and broaden your experiences. He was certainly talented.....no question, but great?

You know that wasn't the point of what I wrote.
