I'm not too sure about this option Matthews has been using in the past couple of weeks...
I liked him much better playing up forward swapping on ball.
Do we really need him down back?
Surely we have better options such as Fixter & Lappin to go back rather than the Sherminator.
We needed him up forward last week more than ever with Ash out.
I'm not too sure if he's playing the whole game down back, but He's starting down back which I'm not too sure I like.
Much prefer him up forward.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but did you watch the Lions play last year?
Shermo came second in the B&F playing off half back.

Of course I did.
Did you not read the whole post?
I like him better playing as a forward what's not to get about that?
IMO we have other players who can fullfill these roles, such as Lappin and Fixter even J-Mac to an extent even though I hate him. He is much more dangerous and looks at home playing up forward is all I'm saying. Garunteed to kick a goal.

was just about to say, i think his problem this year has been because he has been on the HF flank. last year he ran and bounced off half back and occasionally streamed forward for a goal.
i think he looks undersized and ordinary up forward.

he cant do the role ash does, he just isnt as tight defencively and isnt as footy smart to stand in the right places just yet.
i think we are going to struggle to score with johnno and macca out, but shermo is best suited off half back moving into the middle at least for now.

Just from the wording in your original post it sounded like you thought Shermo down back was a new idea being trialled.

Sums up my thoughts nicely.

No no not at all TBD.
Just stating, I have liked the way he's been playing early this year up forward for us is all.
Has great pace and would make a beautifull goal sneak IMO. Could turn into a McRae type player, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

The good thing is that Sherman seems to be able to play a variety of roles. I liked him forward at the start of the year because I thought that was an area that we were deficient, and he has this uncanny knack of finding the goals. Unfortunatley he had a few quiet games and he may have lost a little confidence as a result.

Yeah, probably has the talent to play a multitude of positions given time.
That said, I do prefer him running off half back, he proved last year that he can still kick a goal or two from there.
Remember the 4 goals he kicked in a half vs St Kilda last year in round 22!

I think we should be grooming sherman for a role in the midfield as an outside midfielder/on a wing. He has had his stints up forward, down back, on the ball, etc. I think playing down back on a good opponent will do him very well for his future, and he is doing the job required. His game on deledio was almost as a full-back and he did quite well.

He did have a very stellar season last year running off HBF you're right and he most certainly did get amongst the goals.
He has been a bit hot and cold up forward, But he has a knack of knowing where the sticks are and has a lot of pace to burn. One of his major problems are I believe is his awareness of where his man is and also getting caught holding the ball. H seems to get caught a lot, Or at least he did.
Of course I did.

Hate? That's a bit strong.
JMac still has a role to play in this team. I keep hearing how his disposal is sub-par. That has been blown out of all proportion. Luke Power has missed more targets than he has hit with those little 10 metre sideway chips, but he doesn't get constantly bagged.
You will struggle to find a bloke who puts more effort into his game than JMac. Shun the non-believers JMac! Shuuuuuuunnnnnnn.

A bit harsh about Powers' sideways 10 metre kicks missing the targets.
Most of his sideways kicks produce opportunities out of nothing, and mostly done in the forward half.
J Macs turnovers are in the back half with no pressure.

You're right in saying it was Harsh, and I don't hate hime...I just clinche and scream cuss words at anybody sitting near me whenever he gets the ball.
Even in the forward line with no pressure on him what so ever, he still manages to screw himself and our team royaly.
I hope he comes back and proves us all wrong though, would do the world of good not only for his future but for the Brisbane Lions.

I am one that is glad to see Rhan Hooper back in the fold. He is one of the few small forwards in the game that try their utmost to keep the pill locked in the forward line. Has the potential I believe to be similiar to a Davey at the Demons. He allows Lethal to use "The Tank" across half back/midfield.

Every fast small forward is compared to Aaron Davey these days. Nearly every team has the next "Aaron Davey".
I prefer to think that in a couple of years teams will be looking for the next Rhan Hooper. It's going to take a lot of work and perseverence though. A lot of patience is required for small forwards - they tend to go missing in a lot of games. The beauty about Davey is that he has the ability to regularly get 20+ possession games. Hooper is a fair distance from that just atm.

I was at a do last night where Paul Hudson gave some insight on shermo. The coaching dept want to teach him some defensive skills as he was getting lost in the midfield and up forward. the plan is to make his game more rounded, thus he is tagging to bring these skills into his game, and they have been happy with his progress.:thumbsu:

Thanks blinker.
I always thought Shermo was okay in the midfield and has enormous potential there. Hmmm...
As with our young players, it's not just about the result and stats from each game just played, but the experience and learning they gain for the long term.
Excellent post DC. I think that some of our young guys are being criticised because of their unexpected earlier form. Personally I like that they're being moved around the ground to assist in the growth of their footy smarts.
Thanks blinker.

from paul hudson, Riska may be sent down back this week as he has a penetrating kick they wish to utilise and get the ball into the forward line quicker.:thumbsu: Adcock may move up the ground as he is is in smoking form.

We need two Jeds.
One down back to hold the fort. One to inject some tenacity into the midfield.

That's good to hear Blinker:thumbsu: Cheers for that.
It's good to know the coaching staff have faith in our youngsters as we do.
