I think Mundy will be better utilized playing of the forward line. He has good footskills and creativity to play in the forwardline. He is a decent shot on goal as well. Thornton can play in the backline as his replacement.

I like Thornton in the forward line.

Jury is still out IMO. There is no doubt he has enormous talent and can find space & time when there seems to be none. But he is a bit on the slow side.
I thought it was because he was just composed in the backline but he lacks a 2nd gear.
I think he can still become a Hird style player. Once Macca & Bell retire I could see him working through the midfield cruising around like Adrian Fletcher used to setting up play.

I like Johnno, Thorton and Mundy all forward of the centre. Skill, class and size.

And his complete and utter disdain for a contest makes him unsuitable for the backline. This is a guy who has all intensity of a your first lazy Sunday morning after you've won the Lotto jackpot.

Yeah your right he has become some what of a liability in the backline at times.

I think he comes from the Mark Waugh talent school. So talented he looks lazy!

I agree with you Freodog. I was actually thinking yesterday (whilst kicking a footy around) that his "cruising" manner actually allows him to be more accurate kick. James Hird used to cruise around like that, and if he is 3/4 of the player he is, we have a pretty decent player on our hands.
As for position, I think HFF or even a wing would be good spot.

played forward in juniors until he went to the murray bushranger's so knows where the goals are thats for sure.
as for the lazy look and "softness". i dont think he has an aggressive bone in his body. sometimes looks disinterested and lazy but thats just his personality. very casual easy going fella.
imo his best position would be a wing or flank where his deadly accurate skills can be best utilised spotting up tarrant and pav.

definately putting mundy in the fwd line would add to an already deadly fwd line that has tarrant pavlich n headland. dare i say if freo is too lose pav, that mundy would play foward next season, dave played junior footy fwd and always kicked alot of goals he has the class n a great knack of kicking a freaky goal on either side of the body. build him up and turn him into a very good flanker that can play tall and kick goals weekly.
daves definately from the mark waugh school, cool calm n collected, he could bat a little bit back in the day, was fun to face his bowling though he threw them down short and bowled plenty of pies!

Of all the players that have been spoken on here as ones we should considered for trade (by some), Mundy is the one I think would be most likely to turn himself around and cause us considerable grief. And when I look through our list and consider the skill quotient of the players, I think that he seems to be exactly what we need. Which is not to say that he is everything we need.
With a group of talls from the same draft on our list (Mundy, Campbell and Murphy), I think Mundy is so far in front of the others that it is remarkable, and I fully support the coaching staff developing diversity in the roles players can have within our team.
Nicely said theGav. I've thought for a while Mundy would make a fabulous wingman in the old school style. Running the lines and linking up from back to front. Never actually considered him as a forward but why not? He's a good grab and as good a kick as you'll see. Just love watching him play footy.
