View Full Version : WAFL Report Round 11
I went along to the West Perth v Claremont thriller. Great great game for the neutrals. Heres what went on.
Chad "Glue" Jones - His hands are like glue. He had a absolute field day. West Perth have a minature backline and Chad was all over em. 6 goals including 4 in the first. Probem with Chad yesterday as his work below the knees. Its the only thing which will prevent him from being a AFL star at the moment. 4 6 goal hauls. Gotta be close for promotion
Eric McKenzie - Hes not a midfielder. Well and truly. Its fricken frustrating to watch. Was fairly poor and looked to slow as you would expect a KPP defender to look in the midfield. Gave away alot of frees. Its killing his development. Move him to West Perth NOW!.
Beau Wilkes - Didnt really notice him do much of note. Kind of a stopgap who just floats around the place. Not good enough for promotion sadly.
Llane Spaanderman - So much better then Zach Beeck and proved it again with a BOG performance for Easts. Great thing is his around the ground work yet again. Sounded like he got 20+ touches again His ruck work is good but its his around the ground work that will set him apart from Seaby. A good chance for promotion as he just keeps improving.
Ben McKinley - Was killed down in the forward line. Half way through the 3rd he moved to the wing and killed it apparantly. Its a worrying sign. We dont need him as a midfielder. We need him as a forward. Unfortunately he is struggling down there.
Steven Armstrong - Racked up the stats as usual and named in the best. We know he can get the ball its what he does with it thats the concern. He still isnt improving his disposal.
Jaymie Grahan - Looked very good for a first game back. Ended up with 25 touches and provided alot of run from defense. Didnt do too bad of a job defensively either.
Ashley Sampi - 12 possessions 3 goals. Chased tackled. Hes on the cusp of getting back into the team but you just feel he has to tear one game apart similar to what Farmer did this week
Mark Nicoski - Great to have him back. He still has a raking left boot. Defensively wasnt his greatest game but 25 possessions 10 marks. He will be back in for the Saints game for sure. Good game

Was pumped by Brad Smith, he bagged 7. Graham was poor.
Sampi played one and a half quarters.
Nicoski will be back against the Saints.

Graham only had 3 of those 7 kicked on him from what I understand. Largely played at CHB.

3.2 kicked on him since he was moved onto Smith (not sure who Graham was playing on in the first place). Smith got the ball several times on the lead, uncontested and Graham was hardly sighted. Needs to improve defensively a lot more if he wants to play CHB for WC.

Some of the chasing and tackling of Sampi was exciting but just wish he could get to more contests. Would be interesting to see how he would be going without Jeff Farmer and Clayton Collard in the forward line with him. Three small forwards all chasin crumbs. Would make it tough?? Or maybe easier. Not sure
Still think Samps is wat the Eagles need in there forward line.

Its a ridiculous matchup and should never of been made in the first place. Itd be like asking Mark Seaby to mark Brad Johnson. Graham was always going to be too slow. Hes a CHB not a FB.

True, but whoever played on Smith was going to get smashed. He's just a level above these guys.

I believe Smith had that young bloke Josh Head on him most the day...i think?
Can't waiiiit to have Nicoski back...i've had enough of these heart palpitations watchin the boys **** around with handballs around half back, soon we can give it too Nicoski who can use that beautiful left boot of his to get it down our end!!! :thumbsu:

geez you gotta think he'll be a chance of promotion at season's end, that's about his 6th dominant game in a row now, he and CJones are really standing out atm. If/when he does get promoted you've gotta think he'll press seaby hard for that second ruck/kpp spot
Good news about Spaanderman - a lot of people thought we were idiots for giving him a second chance here. Lets hope he can show them what for :thumbsu:

I agree. Perhaps he can "steal" his way into our top side.

How good is Brad Smith. If i had my life on the line for a kick at goals i would want him to take it... Great kick. He picked one up on the half volley at full speed which looked impressive as well. Sampi looked amazing......... but only for 5 or 6 minutes a quarter. He looks to have slimmed down, still slightly over weight for an afl footballer, but getting there. I've changed my mind, i think he might get a game this year. Graham looked a bit average, if you didn't know then you wouldn't be able to tell he was an afl footballer. Nickoski looked great. Obviously short of some game time and touch, but another game in the wafl should do it, then the rakin left boot is back!!!

Yep. He was always gonna get killed too.
I watched the game on TV and they made a good point, Smith always leads straight up the middle, so he takes most of his shots from straight in front.
Would be harder at AFL level to do the same, but would be nice to see our forwards give themselves a better chance of kicking the goal by leading up the middle and not having to kick it on an angle.

Yeah I watched it also.
I couldn't believe I was actually cheering on Farmer.
I felt terrible afterwards.
Nico's first couple of kicks were shockers but he found form really quickly.

I would so love to see if Brad Smith could kick goals at AFL level.
I reckon it's time Chad Jones is given another chance too. What more does the bloke have to do??

Knee cap Wooden.
We might have to bite the bullet with Butler though if he doesn't improve soon which would open up a spot For Chad Jones to be elevated.

It was very good, hope we (Perth) can kick it to him quickly more often.

Sampi was terrific in the first half (he raped Nicoski) and although he slowed down in the second half he was the reason The Wiz kicked the goal that put South up by 7 points late in the last quarter, he chased and won the ball on the wing then he kicked to Jeff who won a free. His chasing and tacking was top shelf, he ended up with 2 dropping the ball decisions both ended up being goals (one he kicked one he set up). Fought really hard all game.

Agreed, thought he was pretty good. Loved when he run away from Nicoski in the pocket and kicked it through on a tight angle. :thumbsu:
Another thing I liked, he was very vocal with his mates and he looked like he was enjoying himself. Was great to see.
Great signs from Sampi. If hes getting 2-3 goals per game and putting defensive pressure thats all you really want from a small forward - its a hard position to stay in the game for a long period youre bound to go missing. If Sampi is doing this in the WAFL atm, meets his fitness requirements i dont see why he wont be in the side by Round 16 or so. I have faith in him.

Graham is good as a sweeper but gets killed one on one.

Spaanders had 27 possies and 24 hitouts. Swan districts first ruckman (who is not a bad ruckman) had 9 hit outs. That is an awesomly dominant display from a ruckman, as good as his BOG from a couple of weeks ago I would have thought.

Spaanderman's progress is definitely enouraging news. If he can continue with this, it's looking good for next year.
Geez we shud elevate Chad Jones quick, we need someone who can take a good contested mark, and he seemes to know how to give the pill well.
Good to hear Sampi improving, I've always been a fan, hope he's back within the next 2 weeks

**** yeah. Go son.
How mobile is he? My imagination is running away with me, but imagine 2 x Cox's runnig aorund for us...

Hump me sideways. Beau Wilkes got 28 possessions. SHIT!!!. I thought he had about 20 not that many. For those wondering why its so high he played mostly as a ruckmen/lose backmen hence why I call him the stopgap. Losing ruck. Put Mr fix it there in Wilkes.
8 of McKinleys 10 disposals were in the last qtr. Not good enough

I know he's popular but he hasn't offered us enough so far. It's ok not to get a game at his age but his WAFL form has never been too hot for too long.
Then again, WAFL isn't friendly for forwards.

Remember watching him train with the Lions up here and thinking that he had a lot of potential as he was mobile for a big man, however his lack of physical strength and tapwork at the time kept him down the pecking order.
Was happy to see him get picked up by our guys as I thought the Lions never gave him a decent shot at developing and its great to hear that he is progressing nicely in the WAFL.
Here's to him keeping up the good work and putting some pressure on Seaby :thumbsu:
we really lack a number three ruckman, from next year, that will be spaanders.
if there is one truism in football, it is that ruckmen get injured. spaanders will get his chance in the blue and gold, and will probably play 50 games as backup ruckman over the next few years.
whats exciting is his potential to take over seabs spot. he already seems to have a better around the ground game than seabs, as he follows and gets alot of the ball besides just rucking. it might make him a more attractive backup to cox.
Would definately not be unhappy to see sampi and cones on the eagels 22. Would not be unhappy at all :)
