I have not seen him play but reports are his kicking is no way near AFL standard. Another project player like RASO who iv'e been told could be 2 years away.Has to work on his kicking before getting game.

Raso won't be at the club next year. Sounds like Benjamin is another of those ultra-athletes at Carlton who needs a year or two to improve his disposal and decision making.

Before the draft last year, Benjamin was touted as a top 20 pick, and amazingly, fell to us at #51. I wouldn't expect him to debut at all this year, but I would hope Craig Bradley takes him under his wing and gives him loads and loads of advice on kicking at AFL level.

Be interesting to see who put him as top 20

Thats only amateur junior footy followers though.

He was never regarded that highly by recruiters I dont think. WC werent interested and Freo wouldnt even rookie him apparantly.

He wasnt in Shifter Sheehans top 30 either IIRC?

Careful on making generalisations TOA....how many recruiters did you speak to?? Wisbey is thorough, but has some interesting ideas sometimes...I know Clint was rated top 30 by some. I don't recall if he was in shifters top 30, but then again, shifter was sitting behind me at the Challenge cup today and furiously going for his pen whenever i made a comment ;):o

You should put that in your sig! :p

Don't mind TOA, Carlton never draft any good players and all the good talent in the draft goes to the WCE each year.

Well I know about the 2 WA clubs (through Clint himself). And when you consider Clint lasted until pick 52, he cant have been that highly rated by other clubs.

I'm not writing Clint off by any means, I think he could turn out ok on the limited stuff I saw. However, he needs to make alot of improvements (just like alot of draftees). The point I was making is that he wasnt the bargain that many thought.

haha...yes I am very comfortable with our draft record. Trev Woodhouse is the man behind our club rising from 14th to premiers in 5yrs. I am not a huge fan of who the Blues have drafted in the past but its nothing personal. If blokes like Kennedy were at any other club, I would be saying the same thing.

Actually, you probably make a valid point in the fact that he lasted to #51. I know we had him inside our top 30 though, the only reason he wasn't taken at #35 was that we had Austin inside #20.

Carlton's recruiting has been quite different over the past couple of years under Wayne Hughes. Some of the selections he has made have been picks that occasionally weren't rated very highly by others pre-draft so it should be interesting to see how it pans out.

On Benjamin I loved the way he moved in his first game in the Bullants 1's but I think he will always be a fairly flashy player and at the championships last year his work rate wasn't overly impressive. It would be interesting to see him play up on a wing towards the end of the year when he gets a bit more fitness.

Benjamin was generally rated around the top 25 mark going into last season but he dropped back a bit come season's end.

There is a lot of difference between picks 51 and 25. However, recruiters and fans alike could do well to remember that getting a 'bargain' has nothing to do with how a player is 'rated'.

The WCE would have pounced on Kennedy if he had been available when they had their pick. Others weren't that fond of Eric Mckenzie and labelled him as an old fashioned KPP, so I guess he must lack speed off the mark and agility whilst being an aggressive player.

Does that mean Hurn won't be a good player since he fell to pick 13 in an average draft?

Swallow fell as well and can play despite his kicking being pretty poor. Benjamin fell so he must have somes weaknesses in his game, but Benjamin falling can also be put down to the depth of the draft and clubs drafting for need in alot of cases. The Eagles and Pies went tall with nearly every selection.

I'm happy we didn't pick Davey ahead of Benjamin and Anderson. ;)

I actually liked the look of Benjamin from the little I saw of him. But I am not a scout, dont see much junior footy in comparision so I was nobody to judge. I found out this stuff of the WA clubs not rating him a couple of months after the draft. Its always a worry when SA and WA clubs dont rate the kids in their back yard because they have seen them and have had many, many people watching their progress since they were 14. The interstate clubs only really get into the act when the guys are 16/17/18. They dont have the resources to go to many school games etc just the representative ones.

As for WC rating Kennedy. We probably would have taken him at some stage but we rated Clark alot highly. Incidently, we rated Pendlebury very highly. At #3 IIRC.

And on comparing Kennedy to McKenzie in terms of athletic ability, that silly. My main bone with Kennedy is that he is slow off the mark. Eric is anything but, recorded 2.97 at the WA preseason testing last year (thats good for a midfielder). Kennedy recorded 3.14 at draft camp.
