Depends on how long Lance can hold on for and the form of the players involved.
Fevalinkoooooooooooooooooooo 25............has to be FEV that would lift his game ........no doubt

Stupid thread. I'm sure almost everyone would agree that Lance will be as long as he can hold onto it, and when hes done if Murphy (or maybe another young player) are ready they will take over. I dont see why they wouldnt be ready before too long, they are all great young players, but if they arent it will probably be Stevo for a few years who will then pass it on to Murphy. If Stevens isnt in good enough form to be captain, then another experienced player for a few years. All in all, ends up in Murphys hands (most likely)

Same as above, Murphy is still young and should be aloud to concentrate on football, one day he will be a great Carlton captain.

Regular off-field indiscretions have hurt Scotlands reputation and I doubt he would even be considered.
I think it should be Stevo for next the 2 years, Lance to be removed from the position to concentrate on his game, followed by Murph for the next 10+ years, he looks like a born leader.

Whilst his attitude might be top notch, we don't need a Vanderberg type as captain. Wiggins might struggle to even get a game in two years time, let alone captain the club.

I love Wiggo for his work ethic and attitude. He needs to display this to compensate for a lack of top shelf talent however. The Hawks have been a little embarrassed by Vandenberg as captain IMO, not because he doesn't set a good example but because he is on the fringes of a surging side and does not command a spot in the 22. We will need to look at a sure bet like Murphy because nobody is going to displace him from the side for a long time.

Prendergast was in the leadership group 2 years ago-doesn't mean he was anywhere near consideration for the captaincy.
Wiggins won't be the captain of the Carlton Football Club. Ever. And there's a very good reason for that, too.

I don't want this to be a slur against Wiggo. I believe he has great leadership qualities. Talent wise, he is a foot soldier who will get charge out of the trenches and attack the opposition. A vital commodity in any team, but one that can be replaced easier than others. I think Wiggo could be our current day Aaron Hamill for the physical pressure he brings to the party.

Very well put ODN. He may not have the flashes of brilliance a few of the select players do at Carlton, but (and listen up Jeremias) the amount of goals he has set up in the last two weeks were a huge factor for the reason we won those games. I think Wiggo is a late bloomer and we haven't seen the best of him yet.

I'm not bagging him but to suggest that he is even close to captaincy material is both ignorant and stupid. No need to be so dismissive J. We all have our favourites and the fact is there have been low profile captains at AFL clubs plenty of times. It is extremely unlikely Wiggo will ever be in that position but suggesting someone is ignorant or stupid is WAAAAAY over the top.
Play nicely.

Whitnall for as long as he's capable
Then depending on the timing.
Stevens.
And you just never know Carlton may break tradition and go with dual captains in the coming years.
Murphy and Gibbs, They will be our only two number one draft picks and the club may decide to put them both up together.
I can't see Wiggle ever being captain. He's a goodish player who puts all his heart into it, but he is not captain material.
I would think the next captain depends on how long Lance holds the throne for. If he only keeps it for another season then I would say the next in line would be Stevo, but if Lance sticks it out for a bit longer than that then my option for the next captain would be Murphy.
I like Trublue suggestion of dual captainacy for Murphy and Gibbs though.:thumbsu:

To suggest it is ignorant and stupid, and he suggested it therefore he was being ignorant and stupid? It's hard on here but there is that old adage about 'mean what you say and say what you mean'. Never a truer word spoken when trying to interpret the written word.:thumbsu:
more than likely we will have co-captains when the time comes. i'd say muphy and gibbs.
if lance was to pull the pin at years end, then I would say stevens would be made captain until he finishes up.
also it all depends on who is coaching when the time comes to change captains.
ATM other than lance and stevens we don't have a stand out who must be made captain. we can all see the qualities that murphy and gibbs have but they still need time.
our current approach of developing them as part of the leadership group is the right way to go about it.

I'm a bit of a traditionalist with my footy, and don't ever want dual-captains of this great club. no way. Call me old fashioned, but there is also very little need for a 12 man leadership group...
Our next long-term captain will be Marc Murphy, and he will do it for close to, if not over, 10 years. I do supsect that Whitnall may retire early, at the end of this year. he has served our club so well, however with this degenerative knee problem just may help him make a decision about whether or not to play on. He is very loyal, and the club may want to give him one more year just to provide more time for the likes of JK et al. to develop away from teh spotlight in the Ants. Remember, it has taken Jarrod Roughead three years to actually start making any impact in games, and that finally came in the game against us on friday night.
A bit of patience is needed with the majority of our team, they are young, and this inexperience and youth seems to be the scapegoat or something... we want to get saved and we want it now. Ain't going to happen, just wait another year or so before they settle and start to show.
So, if Whitnall steps down at the end of the season, I would assume that Nick Stevens will be given the job for the remainder of his contract, which perhaps could be 2 years. In that 2-3 years, I'm sure we will see Murphy as the new captain. He will be 22. Big shoes? Yes. Enormous, no one is doubting that. However he is captain written all over him.
Andrew Walker is someone who bleeds Navy Blue blood - look at his face when we lose, it's of disgust and shame of having done that to the jumper. I'd love to see Walker as Vice Captain.
Bryce Gibbs of course will get a run. I dont' want him as captain however, as I believe Murphy and Walker deserve it ahead of him.
So... Stevens is next in line.
Stevens retires/steps down.... Murphy to take over.
Murphy Captain. Walker vice. Gibbs deputy vice.
Get rid of all this crap of 12 men in teh leadership group as well...

Anyhow after Judd I would imagine Murphy to be the next based on what I know about him and his articles I've read, but Gibbs is a great young mature guy as well so it's a bit hard to say.
Funnily enough, this thread is now more relevant in a way then when it first started.
I think your time frame on Judd being captain for the next 6 odd years is too much. Im not saying he couldn't be a good leader for that long, but I just don't like the idea of having one guy in the position for such a lengthy period. He will still lead without the title.
So, I think in perhaps another 4 years after this one, Gibbs and Murphy will be hitting their prime, and will both be great candidates to take over. Personally, I think Gibbs will most likely take it next. Simpsons name would still be chucked around I'd imagine.

19 February 2008: Chris Judd appointed Captain of the Carlton.
18 July 2008: Judd plays the best 13 minutes of football ever seen almost single handedly dragging Carlton to victory against the Saints, HBF still very much out of control!
20 July 2008: In a crucial season defining game against Sydney, Carlton need Judd's leadership to hold onto the four points and hopes of playing in September. After a strong first half, Brett Kirk keeps Judd to 4 touches for the second half of the game. Finally HBF stops creaming...but for how long? :p
