Thanks to Mad Dog for the player list from the “Winged Crows” thread, who do you reckon is our best player? Second best? Third best? And so on. Its difficult to rank players and its obviously very subjective and if a player is outside the best 22 does not mean they dont deserve a game. Rookies are ignored and I’ve also omitted long term injury candidates Biglands, Hentschel and Bode. Heres my list:

1. Goodwin-Great ball winner and use of the ball is fantastic.
2. Rutten-Key full back and critical to our success
3. Thompson-Has developed and matured into a very important player for us, discipline has improved ten-fold also.
4. Riccuito-Would be higher up but for limited games of late and has struggled when he’s been back, still gave us a lift in the middle when he went in there on Sunday. He's not finished yet.
5. McLeod-Stellar year this year, obviously. His run off half back is team boosting.
6. Johncock-as per McLeod in some ways but younger, like to see him up forward more, even on the ball sometimes if he can hack it fitness wise.
7. Edwards-Up and down a bit this year but for me this guy is great
8. Burton-fantastic athlete, when he’s fit he can be equal parts amazing/tear your hair out.
9. Basset-Proof that sticking with the lesser likes pays off, remember when he was useless, granted Rutten has made his life easier but Bass is a great player now for us. Can be a little loose but that’s the chance you take when you play like him, I for one like it.
10. Reilly-Hard done by to be this far down perhaps, highly skilful but like some others he needs to get in more and win the hard ball.
11. Hudson-very important player for us, and as our last remaining solid ruckman if he goes down with an injury its all over folks
12. Knights-Sorry but he’s ahead of van Berlo for me, great link up player, ball magnet and now that he’s polished up his disposal hes our best youngster IMO. How did I not pick him in my Dream Team?!!!
13. VB-as for knights but not quite as polished, also needs to get in a little bit more but that’s my only criticism of him. Will play over 200 games for the afc.
14. McGregor-Some may be relieved/surprised that I don’t have Kenny at number one (I thought about it ;)). Seriously though, he’s a great contested mark-finally we have a target up forward, he can kick straight and holds the ball inside our forward 50 and can bring the ball to ground in a contest to the advantage of a crumbing forward (potentially, we don’t have one at the moment). Proved on the weekend he deserves a spot in the team easily and is not limited to one role, I could squeeze him into the top 10 I reckon but I don’t want to get a reputation for liking certain players…
15. Shirley-Another one who could be higher but as far as influence goes he’s not ranked as highly as some of the above for me. Without him though we would be a worse team, wins great contested ball and the likes of Goody, Thompson, Reilly etc benefit from his hard and tough work.
16. Bock-Should be much higher but this year he is having a bit of a shocker and although this isn’t based on this year alone, I couldn’t bring myself to put him ahead of the above players because of it.
17. Porplyzia- I’m surprised I’ve ranked him so lowly (but at least he gets the #16 spot ;)) because I really like him, fantastic intensity, great skills, can kick both sides and never misses a set shot, a permanent fixture in our forward line IMO.
18. Mattner-Great tackler and used to run and carry the ball and break lines but has been figured out, block his left side and he’s trapped. Please play him on the wing/get a right foot, preferably both. Has lost a lot of his influence on the game and some would argue his spots in danger, but I think a change would be better than a holiday for Marty.
19. Massie-Unlucky not to be getting a game behind the likes of Jericho, and his SANFL form is fantastic from what I hear.
20. Griffin-Still a long way to go but promises a lot.
21. Douglas-I like him but limited games pushes him down the list here.
22. Doughty-I don’t reckon he does the hard things, links up well with a handball setting up run in space but never really hurts the opposition. Probably harsh to put him 20th but I don’t really rate him.
23. Perrie-Lynch me, shoot me, do whatever but he’s not in our best 22 players. The fact that he’s 23rd however is because I think he does deserve a spot in the team for the sake of structure and the role he fills so even though he’s outside top 22, I’d have him in. On the downside, he is not as versatile as a 24. Stevens, kicking is obviously the let down factor too and misses hurt the momentum of the team.
24. Stevens-Good on his day but too up and down, soft too, sort of ranks 23rd with Perrie as he prob deserves a spot and can fill numerous roles.

After this it starts to trail off into players that aren’t really worth rating on their afl experience, some promise and potential but that’s not what this thread is about. Hmm, perhaps I have put Griff ahead of some players I shouldnt have but its gonna happen.

Oh and last place goes to Jericho, “the human marshmallow”. However he does have some ability and if we really need to play him he looks alright on the wing playing unaccountable football due to his athleticism and he can kick a long goal but in a final he wouldn’t be worth 2 cents at the moment.

Please feel free to make your own list, I’m not 100% sure on my list and will probably change it around as discussion unfolds and promotes though or reminds me of players I’ve missed! Cheers.

Scrapes into the not really worth mentioning category as he's not a regular enough player, showed a little bit but not entirely convincing.

What do you mean by van Berlo needing to 'get in a little bit'? Surely you're not questioning his intensity at the ball?

No, not what I meant. Just that when the ball is on the ground in a pack, how good would it be if we had someone prepared to take those really heavy hits, bang through, put his head over the ball and play that Bickley/Koster type role. Relates a bit to my thoughts on how we need another Shirley type player to improve our clearances. Someone who goes somewhat un-noticed by some, but whom without we would be worse off and the more skillfull players like Thompson, Goodwin etc benefit from. VB's attack on the ball is good at the moment though, but I would like him to turn into a Kane Johnson type player if you like, more skillful than a Bickley or Koster but burrows in and under at stoppages.

he was a wingman wasn't he, with terrible disposal. why would we pine for him?

Hmm, we still seem to have a difference of opinion, because i think van Berlo IS the type of player to do that. He broke his collarbone doing it last year after all.

Started to notice a pattern so I had a look at "find more posts by crow-mo", they're the most whiny, critical, non-sensical posts ive seen which just make snide comments, criticise others and you dont seem to make any valid or thought provoking points yourself. If you actually read what Im saying properly for once you'll realise that what i mean is that I think we're lacking one extra player who really gets in and under the bottom of a pack like a Shirley. From whom the more skillful, flashy players like thompson, knights benefit. Yes VB does do this but i think he could do it more, although he is obviously playing the link up type role he is being told to do and doing it exceptionally well. Hats off to van berlo, have to remind yourself he's only just 21 sometimes.
I mentioned him because i think he's the kind of player who does do it and has the potential to work into it more, obviously he is more skillful than the old number five but some of you may remember me saying vb could be a rich-man's kym koster, somewhat like a Kane Johnson type if you will.
Sorry if i ranted a bit there at the start y'all but i feel i played the ball, not the man.

/me hands out pacifiers
this is senseless a team without parts is no team.
Mattner rocks, he caused them to score one goal last game right?
stopped about 5 fair trade for mine seeing as error = goal in that game.
When players are already holding your arm before you have the ball as Geelong do it's difficult to get away and yet he was still doing it once again bar once when the Geelong guy was beaten and then got the free kick from being a cling on.

I think it should be considered, which players are the hardest to cover. ie. If injured, would leave the biggest hole in our team structure compared to their replacement. This a little different to the "best" player - more like the most valuable player.

Top Tier
Hudson - best ruckman by a mile
Hentschel (LT inj :() - most dangerous KPP forward & streets ahead of the rest
Burton (inj) - give us unpredictability

2nd Tier
Rutten - best key defender, but not top tier as the likes of Kenny can play his role.
Macca - for his rebound, again not top tier because Stiffy is not far off.
Bassett - would miss him marshalling the defence
Goody/Thompson - best 2 midfielders & with one injured, the other is is easier to cover.
Roo - fearless leader wit his flexibility either on ball or up forward.

3rd Tier
Johncock - no coincidence we struggle without him.
Shirley - easily our best tun-with player.
Edwards - not the player he was, but still very important.
Welsh - one of our few match winning forwards.
Reilly - most damaging disposal for a midfielder.

Reilly should be at least in the 2nd tier and IMO the 1st tier.

Without him this year we've been absolutely hopeless.
