Sydney’s Western Suburbs got in control of the slippery conditions early in their match against the East Coast Eagles at Roger Sheeran Oval in their round two Sydney AFL clash last weekend.
Heavy rain during the first quarter contrasted with the bright conditions of the last term, when the Magpies kicked 6.1 to East Coast’s 1.7 to come from behind and win.
Despite the win Wests’ coach Laine Spencer was not entirely impressed:
“We didn’t play our football and I believe we were a long way below par.
“Our confidence was down on the backline until Scott Thompson shifted down back in second half. Our backline needs to step up, they need to know where their man is and close him down.
“For the first three quarters we were flat and lazy, including myself, and that’s what kept East Coast in the game.”
It was a frustrating loss for the Eats Coast eagles, who let a third quarter time lead evaporate and have now lost their opening two games by margins of less than two goals.
For East Coast eagles co-coach Gus Seebeck it is now a case of back to the drawing board for his young side.
Former Balmain Tiger Lee Campbell is playing well for the Western Suburbs Magpies, kicking goals even when shifted into the midfield, and Peter Costantino has made a welcome return to form.
For the Eagles great promise was shown by wiry defender Matthew Arbon, and another former Tiger, Andrew Ryan, gave good service alternating in the ruck with Seebeck.
On Saturday afternoon Campbelltown appeared overawed by the venue as they put up little resistance to a promising Sydney Redbacks outfit at the SCG.
In other games Troy Luff’s Balmain Tigers were pipped at the post by UNSW – Eastern Suburbs, who kicked six goals in the last quarter to snatch a narrow win, while St George produced an amazing form turnaround to thump an injury riddled Pennant Hills by a hundred points.
