He will be even better than we first thought, but it will take a couple more years. Don't forget this is his first year as a regular seniors player, playing as a Key Forward(not an easy assignment). He is currently our second leading goal kicker and has played less than 30 games. Not a bad effort!

he gets found out when a good defender is on him (let's face it Adelaide's defence is one of the best in the league), Mooney and Gaz are playing so well this year it's making Nathan look a bit second rate but it's a learning curve for him and he has some way to go....good to see he doesn't miss many when he gets it in his hands though. (Also needs to be a bit more selfish).
Yes.
Firstly, he is only 21 and has played less than 30 league games. He didn't play junior football at the elite level like the TAC cup so his football development has set him back at least 1 year. By purely looking at his build, you can tell he has a lot more room for improvement in strenght, stamina, etc. Key forwards mature much later than midfielders and Nathan will take a little bit longer to reach his prime compare to the other key forwards because of his late start in development. Also key in the genetic factor. His daddy was a late bloomer - He kick over 100 goals three times and those were all when he was in his early to mid 30's!

Well I thought he would kick 30 goals from 20 games this year, and he is on his way to do that.
I never expected him to kick 40 plus. Yes, a tall key forward should kick closer to 40 than 30 in a year, but from a 2nd year player (He is pretty much only into his 2nd year in the system physically) thats pretty damn good for him to hold his spot and kick 30 goals.

Gary Snr was also extremely strong and explosive. Nathan is not.

When you see a thread like this, do a search on their post history before you respond. See here (http://bigfooty.com/forum/search.php?searchid=1830634). Speaks volumes.

Agree with what is stated here.
He is only in his second year as his first cannot be counted, a very large step from U/18's in country footy to the AFL. That first year also put a lot of stress on his body, which maybe affected his second year.
I'd say if he kicks between 30-40 goals he has done his job. We all should remember that the days of a full forward kicking 100 goals is just about gone.
So I'm happy with the way he is going, even though he has dropped off a bit. Looking forward to him having a go this weekend.

Nice summary mate. Good to see another on here with a bit of common sense.

This is the most important point made during this oft-repeated theme/thread.
He'll be fine. He was useless on Sunday but everyone has bad days. Picture him with a better build, more physical and mental stamina and tell me he won't be a great player! That's destined to happen over time.

at the end of the day geelong dont rely on targets up forward, the whole team contributes.
i think as long as he kicks accurate he is doing his job.
he will never be the #1 forward but he doesnt need to be.

I understand where you are coming from with this post, but I think the Adelaide game showed that there are times when we will need a Forward to be "a target." Mooney's 3 goals in that game were a vitally important when defense was on top.
As others have pointed out in about 10 threads now, Nathan is still immature because of the football education he missed as a junior. So I think in the next few years you will see a very very good footballer emerge.

You often see people mis-spell a players name but to stuff up the first and last name in one sentence! especially when it is a common 1st name and famous afl last name.
