View Full Version : Who will step up with Goodwin out?
Assuming Goodwin misses a few weeks, who do you think will play a more significant role in the midfield?
The obvious answer is Scott Thompson, however do you guys think he is capable of handling a tag (was well beaten by Simon Godfrey against Melbourne)?
What about Chris Knights? How do you think Goodwin's absence will impact on his game?
Essentially I am asking whos game will benefit most from Goodwin's absence?

van Berlo will dominate.

I know that McLeod is doing wonderfully well off of half back and I know he was pretty ordinary in the midfield under Ayres but what if NC just used McLeod on the ball as a bit of a pinch hitter for short burst every now and then to help out with the midfield rotations.
Bring in Massie as another defender, that could cover Mcleod whilst on the ball or resting as well as Massie could cover for Stiffy whilst he is roving out of the forward pocket.
Probably won't happen but I'd like to see a bit more McLeod magic out of the middle just one more time before he hangs his boots up.
So to answer your question, hopefully macca... I know I am going to get shot down with this suggestion :)

Funnily enough i was serious with my van Berlo answer. Who stepped up the most with Goody down against Geelong?
If Goodwins out, van Berlo may have to play more of an attacking midfielder role, which should mean more touches, possibly a few goals, and better stats for my dreamteam, which is what im assuming this thread is about.

VB, Thommo and, possibly, Doughty?
Leave Macca back and don't use Roo in middle!
My 2 cents worth!

Dont use Roo in the middle?
He was worn like a glove playing in the forward line.
Start him up forward and if he cant contribute, then move him.

Given our current mis-firing forward line, Roo must stay up front IMHO. At least he can take the best defenders with him similar to when Carey played for us. Besides, his match fitness level can't be great ATM and he will be burnt out too quickly playing in the centre.
Knights or Vince? Even Shirley or Douglas?
What about Edwards?
Difficult to see any of the kids stepping up into Goody's large shoes.
Over to you Mr Edwards!

the rotations will narrow slightly - and Edwards and Macca will get more of a run in the middle
Well he's not out..... yet.

What has Luke done now? Injured? If not, he must feel like he is being used like a revolving door!

He played one of the softest games I've ever seen. Even for him.
Deserved to be dropped.

Err.... Craig has used McLeod in the midfield a few times this year for short bursts.
I would suspect that Massie and Roo would spend more time in the midfield to cover Goodwin's loss.

Well there you go, I must have been changing a diper at the time
I just can't remember seeing McLeod in the middle at a bounce after a goal.

My guess is that Macca will follow Wells if he is playing, did that last time we met at TD last year and seemed to work in your favour. This will result in him playing a fair bit in the middle.

One player I have been a little disappointed with this season has been Douglas. I was impressed by what I saw in the preseason when he spent time in the midfield but he has filled in for Johncock in the backlines and looked just ok then for Bode in the forward line and tried hard but struggled to get into the games. Missed a game or two with a hammie and now he finds himself at the Bays, even with Reilly and Goodwin out.
With our ageing midfield there are ample opportunities for young players to stake their claim. Knights and VB are the obvious examples of players who have. I really thought that Douglas would have forced his way in front of a few by now (perhaps Doughty). Perhaps a little harsh on a young player but he's one player I thought would take to senior footy luck a duck to water.

For the most part, he has looked pretty good in defence. Has really stuggled up forward which is no surprise. Ray Chamberlain could see that was never going to work.
When he played on ball during the pre-season he was fantastic. Thats his spot, and if there are no vacancies there, then should be played in defence.
I hope he never lines up forward again.

I think one of the youngsters will stand up today - my guess is that new fella in the Number 32 Gurnsey - he looks like he could be a real gun if he could string a few games together.
