I would include Boak, Brogan, Thomson and Gray in the 22. I dont think Pettigrew should be dropped however and surely if there isnt a spot for him in defence there is one for him in attack....We could do with 1 accurate kick for goal.
Thomson wont be included, i want him in, but there are obviously areas of his game that the coaching staff feel need improving.

Shin splints have been mentioned. If that's the case, a few weeks off might be the go (he can still do weights work and add some more muscle).

I'd love to see pretty much everyone listed as 'Interchange' in the 22. And why is Peter Burgoyne even playing? He looks about 60% fit at the moment.

Would also like to see Sal starting at the centre bounce.

P.Burg looks a cert to tear a quad or hammy very soon.

I know I've mentioned this a few times now, but it is so obvious he can only run in straight lines - whenever an opponent sidesteps him or goes past him he's stuck like a train easing into the station.

It serves absolutely no purpose to have him in the side at 40-50% of his powers - and as you say, with each passing week he looks that much closer to tearing a muscle and spending 4-6 weeks on the shelf.

Sal is Francou v2.0 but with cleaner skills and a greater engine. It's no secret now, but his extraction and evasive ability in traffic is ludicrously good. Top shelf, in fact.

Cannot understand why he is marooned on a wing while those currently in the engine room are getting smashed week-in week-out.

The basis of a return to the formula which provided the matchwinning midfield of 2001-04 is there, it just needs games under its belt and in certain cases, a rocket.

Thomilf = Roger James.
Sal = Josh Francou.
Junior* = Peter Burgoyne.
?????? = Josh Carr.
Wilbur = Damien Hardwick pinchhitting nigglemerchant role.

* - Provided the real Shaun decides to turn up.

It's interesting that we are still taking an extra tall into our matches with both White and Tredrea struggling for much input.

I would have liked to see Boak and Thomson come in for this game to address our biggest problem area (the midfield).

I reckon Bentley will get the nod based on his versatility.

Considering Tredrea was always going to play I'm pretty happy with those changes.

Gray, Brogan, Lower, Thomson is my bench.

Bickley was pushing the line fairly strongly that Boak was going to debut. Seemed to think Thomson was likely to play as well. David Hutton played a straight bat to the speculation tho.

Rain forecast for Sunday might see a tall (the Grew) drop out for Thommo, with Boak in for Krak.

No surprise that despite Mark's bluster in the post-match presser, all the senior players get a pass.

Ok first up, i'll admit i haven't seen much of him..but from what i saw:

He's one of those players, like Logan imo. Goes in hard, but has a small body so doesn't do much damage, tries his heart out... but has no other strings to his bow.

Isn't overly quick, strong, skilled or anything. imo in football these days you need to have more than just 'hard at the ball'. Unless you are big and can throw your body around effectively.

Ford Fairlane
15 Jun 2007, 17:47
Lower's 189cm and 87kg (that's 6cm taller and 9kg heavier than Logan) so he's a decent size. And he has a bit of 'mongrel' about his play.

He's only in his second year on the list and is learning a new role taking on bigger opposition key forwards which he's adapting to.

There's an interesting article in The Australian discussing the rise of this more medium sized defender to take on bigger key forwards.

Firrito wins new battle hands down
Malcolm Conn
June 15, 2007

THE Kangaroos' Michael Firrito believes the new and controversial hands-in-the-back rule may be part of the reason why the AFL is developing a new breed of smaller, quicker key defender.
With less physical contact between power forwards and their opponents for fear of sometimes frivolous infringements, height and strength can be sacrificed for the speed necessary to match and beat leading forwards.

"It is interesting. I don't know whether it's just a coincidence or maybe the new rule," Firrito said yesterday before flying to the Gold Coast for tomorrow night's match against Adelaide at Carrara.

"It does seem the trend that you can play a little bit smaller and still get away with it. Even though I'm giving away height, I don't feel as though it's any disadvantage really.

"Players are still getting smarter. Everyone will adapt to it (the new rule) eventually."

The Firrito experiment has been mirrored by Campbell Brown at Hawthorn, Harry O'Brien at Collingwood, who injured a shoulder in last Monday's match against Melbourne, and St Kilda's James Gwilt.

etc ...

Wow, i never realised he was 189cm..I'm with you still deeps.

Each time I have seen Lower at AFL level he has not looked ready. He doesn't get enough of the ball or provide enough run for a small defender. He loses the ball in the flight and loses touch on his man far too often to be a deep defender and he isn't strong enough to play on key position players.

He needs more time and I would bring in a raft of players before him.

Lower seems to get the Nathan Bassett treatment of almost always matching up on a bigger opponent, so its not a big surprise that he's struggled to impress.

Why, who on here has been getting stuck in? Everything that has been said has been spot on, and this is coming from someone who sees him play every week.

I believe he's still too light to regularly compete at AFL level, and he needs to add another 3-5 kg’s. He has good skills, great pace and courage, and he is good overhead. The two main queries I have about his game are the lapses and brain fades he seems to have every now and then, and his often careless nature. For example he will take a brilliant mark and then decide to play on and get himself into trouble. Beautifully skilled player, but he needs to work on his intensity and adding a few more kg’s.
