View Full Version : SANFL Round 11

14 Jun 2007, 19:47
Round 11 Fixture:
Saturday 16th June
Sturt v Port, Unley Oval (ABC TV)
Sunday 17th June
North v Eagles, Prospect Oval
Glenelg v West, Challenge Recruitment Oval
South v Central, Hickinbotham Oval
Bye - Norwood
• Ivan Maric will be playing for the Magpies which is the ABC televised match.
• Rookie Greg Gallman will line-up at full back for North, whereas Bernie Vince is listed as an out due to the Crows. Nick Gill is still out injured, a very worrying sign.
• John Hinge will be in action for Glenelg, as will Richard Douglas. James Sellar could play his second league game of the season after spending the last two weeks in the reserves.
• Rhys Archard is in great form after a 40+ possession game last week for the Panthers, but James Turner has been dropped after a very quiet game.
• And Darren Pfeiffer will make his return to football with West Adelaide reserves. John Meesen will probably also be in action in the reserves.

Sturt on TV again! loves it.
Tips:
Sturt
North
Glenelg
South
Bentley and Thomson are back at Port so maybe a debut for one of the reserves lads??
Get down to Unley ICDM. I was at the corresponding game at Alberton to see the Blues kick 20.3 and storm home to beat Port in a great game
And no I wont fall asleep this time :o

Yeah I'm heading down most likely sitting on the wing :)
I might head out Sunday to watch Richie and Hinge go around for the Bays.
I'll hopefully head down to the Sturt game too :thumbsu:
Go you Double Blues!
Anyway, did anyone see the Sturt vs Central Districts match last weekend? Great result ;) but a standout for the dogs and best for them was a bloke called Daniel Havelberg, obviously a long way to go but worth keeping an eye on as a potential afl pickup? Would like to know what any doggies supporters think, as well as anyone who knows enough to offer an opinon as not everyone knows that much about the SANFL these day, esp myself.

Pleased to see the ABC get with the program and show the Port-Sturt game this week. I'm sure last week's 7th vs 8th blockbuster drew better figures than the boring 1st vs 2nd game they could have covered.

To be fair, the ABC would try and show each team a relatively even amount of times and they do the schedule about a month in advance I think. Nobody really expected Sturt to be second, but a lopsided draw and a couple of surprises results have helped their cause. I don't think Norwood have even appeared on TV once this season which is a bit ridiculous.
In saying that, I would have preferred to watch Sturt vs Centrals and I would have paid attention to it instead of using the West vs South match as background noise.

Daniel Havelberg has played in defence and forward for us this year and done the job in both spots, he is 19 and about 6' 2" . He seems to be one of those players who has a lot of time when he has the ball, unfortunately for him AFL scouts obsession with pure athletes may preclude him being drafted as he is definitely a "footballer" . If he doesnt go he should play many good games for C.D.F.C.

Sturt - 12 points

Glenelg - 36 points
Central - 60+ points
I think the loss at Unley last week will spur the first really good performance from Centrals in a over a month. They've been on auto pilot since flogging the Eagles on Anzac day and that loss will wake them from their slumber.

I don't understand how so many opposition supporters are confident of North beating the Eagles. Just about everybody has backed us on SAFooty, 2 journos out of 3 went for the merged side though.. but us North fans are not very confident at all. We rarely beat the Eagles.

Yeah and is it because the Crows are playing at footy park?? They play at the bloody gold coast tomorrow night! So it's not like they are trying to avoid a clash. They have included more Sunday games this year because the odd Sunday game in the past drew a big crowd I think, so if they have 3 a week they will have record numbers

If he is more 'footballer' than 'athlete' then he is definitely worth investing time in. Too much impetus is placed on players being athletes these days but I would take a natural footy player over some bloke who can run around a bit anyday. The fact that he is playing well for a team which has dominated the SANFL for far too long and has continued to do so this year must tell you something about the bloke.
The dogs don't mess around with lads who aren't up to it.

He did have a stinker. Some of his ruckwork was okay, but his field play was very ordinary as was his work up forward.
He seems to have lost all mobility at the moment - he looked very cumbersome.
He's going to have to really work on his game before he even remotely threatens Griffins position on that effort.
I'll add to the chorus of "Maric had a stinker"
I thought he was terrible. At the moment he can't run, falls over, drops simple marks and is just atrocious.

He got beaten in the ruck by 32 year old Simon Feast who no longer has any spring; that’s disappointing. His ruckwork was extremely average and he wouldn’t have had more than 10 hit outs. He did improve around the ground in the second half, taking 2-3 nice marks in defence.
However on the whole it was another sub par performance for someone who was considered a near certainty to be our back-up ruckman this year. He's been back for about 2 months now and he's no closer to finding any sort of form. If we can only keep one of Maric and Meesen, who would you make the priority to re-sign?

Are you going to ask this question after every game???
Relax. I'm not writing Maric off, he’s still a great prospect. But on what we’ve seen this year he’s not going to add to his games tally at AFL level. The thing is, Meesen is almost good enough to make it at the top level as a CHB/CHF as he wins a lot of the ball and has good skills.
Other than Maric’s ruckwork there isn’t a lot to work with IMO. He has a slightly awkward kicking style, too often he looks for the quick handball to a running midfielder, and he doesn’t possess great speed. If Meesen can add a few kg’s and improve his ruckwork, he is without doubt the superior prospect. Both are out of contract at years end, I doubt both will stay, I’m just throwing up the question of which one you would make the priority of re-signing.

Yes he struggled today . Best I can say is he is lacking confidence and I would have thought his opportunistic goal would have lifted him. Was interesting to see Meiklejohn start the centre clearances but he looked ok.
Deluca struggled I felt and the best I can say for both AFL listed boys is to keep plugging away...because it seems that its ony when you gain the experience Simon Feast has that you can dominate the whole ground and not just centre square bounces

I thought the game was terribly over umpired. Woodcock has no clue. Both sets of the supporters were going mental at the umpires today.
I thought the first half was probably a poor standard but the second half was great gritty tough football. Was bloody dark though. Last quarter was terrible and probably the darkest ive seen at a day game.
Sturt have a great group of youngsters there. Very very talented group of youngsters. Mcdonald was exceptional, Herring is good, Crane is good, Button, Darling, Gregory, Mcleay. If they can keep hold of most of them then they will win a flag with this group.

Alledgedly some bloke in Westies gear threw a couple at some psycho Sturt female. Couple of guys were going for it and about 7 security guards had to hold them backand pin them down. Ended up the cops came and both got arrested. Apparently the West supporter legged it. Psycho female went nuts at the security guards and cops and almost got arrested herself, much to the cheers of the crowd watching.

That explains why the Weslo bloke rushed to that area from next to me.
It was dark as you know and it was a struggle to see the middle of the ground, and my eyesight is poor at best

Marics stats yesterday were 13 possessions, 8 Marks, 1 goal, 4 tackles and 17 H/O. They dont look to bad too me.
That's what I thought too. Not too shabby stats for a guy coming back from a serious injury in what his 2nd or 3rd league game.

Yeh his second half was a big improvement; he would've only had 3 possessions at half time. He played loose in defence for most of the second half, standing in front of Chambers.
But it was the dropped marks, the struggling to win hitouts vs Feast that was discouraging. And it’s funny how everyone on here who watched the game thought Maric had a stinker, and yet those who just see his stats try and talk up his game.

How stubborn are you, seriously? Macc19 attend every Magpies game, and he said this was his 5th league game, he even posted his stats. I have all the stats for every SANFL game this year, yesterday was his 5TH league game.

If Meesen had stats like that, you would have him in Magary Medal contention.
Is Sellar lining up for the bays today?
They are flogging West at the moment...
Hopefully Hingey and Dougie are going alright too.

So its ok to use stats when they paint a poor picture or if your quoting Meesens stats?

Roosters, Tigers and Dogs notch up wins
NORTH Adelaide burst clear of Woodville-West Torrens in the final term to notch a hard-fought 28-point win at Prospect Oval this afternoon, with Glenelg and Central District also recording wins.
Despite carrying a three-goal lead throughout most of the match, the Roosters were unable to shrug of the persistent Eagles until midway through the last quarter when Chris Ladhams kicked the sealer from the boundary line.
Key North forwards Clint Alleway and Michael Wundke played important roles in the win, booting four and three goals respectively for the hosts while rover James Allan found plenty of the ball.
Makeshift Eagles forward Ben Schwarze led well and booted three goals but a lack of support in attack certainly didn't help the visitors' cause.
Meanwhile, Glenelg continued its crawl up the SANFL ladder and consigned West Adelaide to cellar-dwella with a thumping 132-point win at Glenelg today.
West scored its first goal 10 minutes into the third quarter when Glenelg had 14.12 before winning 26.18 (174) to West's 6.6 (42)
And Central District survived a tough fight from South Adelaide to triumph by 21 points at Noarlunga Oval.
The Panthers will rue poor kicking at goal for the defeat after taking the battle to the competition pacesetters. CD 14.11 d SA 10.14.

Stats = overrated.
He kicked 3.1 as posted above, surely "Sellar played well and kicked a few goals" will suffice. Who cares if he had K:15 HB:10 M:8 as that doesn't tell the whole story you statwhore. It is difficult to judge his performance today as there was no opposition.
