Had a close look at Lee today in the reserves.
He seems to have all the basics right, its just whether he can develop in the second half of the season.
Plays a bit like Perrie in my opinion. Has decent pace for a tall, has a very good leap (took a very good contested mark on a lead), strong hands and a decent left foot kick. He works hard off the ball to keep the ball in the area. Probably needs to double lead a bit more. If he doesnt get kicked to then he seems to stop a bit. Kicked 3 goals and would have been inthe best players. Would like to see him again at league level.
Hardy. Dont know what to think of him. Vanilla small defender. Didnt seem to have anything special about him. His skills were poor today. He plays tight and can find the ball.
Bentley was high in the best for Sturt. Dominated around the ground. Thomson was decent, not sure if he was in the best players but he played well. Deluca was decent. Krakouer didnt play.

Reasonably quiet first half by Thomson but he was very good in the second. For some reason I just really, really rate the guy. Is exceptional around the stoppages and in a huge pack of players he still seems to come out with the ball. Bentley found a lot of the ball but his disposal was ordinary IMO, but I can see how people thought he was very good.

Does anyone know if that possibly means someone is pulling out of the side tomorrow?

Nah it's very unlikely, Krakouer wasn't named for the Magpies or in the Power 25, and Port have said Shaun will play (FWIW). It's rumoured Krak has shin splints so is being rested.
Bentley looked good today, couple of dodgy disposals but generally pretty good, and he got his hands on the ball quite a bit.
Thommo got a bit of it and used it well mostly, but wasn't a standout.
Deluca was tall.

He has had a few injuries this year plus needs to improve his disposal by foot as it is not up to AFL standard, but yeah a lot around here rate him quite highly and we expect him to be a many many game player.

His disposal has been ok to good in the past, perhaps he had an off night.
I thought Bentley was ordinary until the last quarter when he racked up a lot of tight possessions and took some nice saving marks and such. He made a couple of unusual skill/decision errors early on. Looked a class above in the last.
Thomson was okay, this might sound silly but i think he's a player that won't necessarily dominate SANFL just because he's a good AFL player (if and when he turns out to be). His role and playing style won't generally see him doing 'spectacular' things even if he has a great game, kind of like Kane in 2004.

Both DeLuca and Maric suffer from what is common in most young ruckmen ( the outstanding ones know where to go) they are tall and can create a contest in the centre bounces and around the ground ruck work, but its the other that sets experienced ruckmen from the pack.
Knowing where the ball is going to go and puttting themselves there.
They would have learnt a lot from Simon Feasts game yesterday. ( or should have)

Deluca tried to show some aggression with some push and shove which was admirable, but other than that was hardly sighted. Won his fair share of hitouts as usual, but only 2 kicks (1 from a free) and 2 handballs. Last week he had 1 kick. And no marks either week.
Bentley looked to be on ball, and resting down back occasionally.
Stats from the game:
Bentley 21K 14M 3H 4T 1.1 best on ground
Thomson 12 6 8 1.0
Deluca 2 0 2 13HO
Lee (res) 3 goals 2nd best

Just as a bit of an aside, Port Magpies are top in U19s and beat second placed Sturt by 20 goals. There's some talent coming through.

I see there was a punch on between spectators at the game. You weren't there with Santos were you? :p
Honestly, what's the world coming to when Port and Centrals supporters can't go to ovals in the leafy, genteel eastern suburbs without being assaulted by thugs from the landed gentry? Too much time spent filming each other beating up PAC and Saints rivals on their mobile phones methinks!

Is that the punch up behind the cheersquad?? Didnt see it happen but saw some bloke being held face down on the road by the security guys.
There was a lot of abuse being slung around by the Sturt supporters near us..Why couldnt they just enjoy the win without assaulting the opposition supporters.

You have to remember you're dealing with a club whose one sustained period of success finished 30 years ago. They've wallowed in mediocrity before then and since. But there's enough of them left to remember the 'glory days' so they get a bit bullish at any sign of a revival. And they've probably filled their kids heads with a ridiculous notion of some mythical glorious Sturt past, so they carry on a bit too.
It's never too long before they're back to tending the gardens of Unley and Rose Park, with a bit of Chopin playing on the phonograph thru the dining room window. ;)
(Truth be told, some Port supporters probably wandered too close to the secret laboratory at the back of Jack's Bar where they have the brightest young genetics graduates trying to clone some of Jackie O's DNA).

We all know what happened in 1976, and really Sturt probably unleashed the monster that Port Adelaide became again following that game. So in a bizarre way, we owe you some thanks. No pain, no gain I think they say.
And I mean my 30 year timeline was generous enough to include 1978. How did that GF pan out again? Weren't Sturt 5 goals up at 3/4 time? ;)

Might be an idea for Timmy to start pushing the talent through then, don't you think?
I haven't been to too many Port Magpies games due to working commitments, but i thought that the reason Sturt won was they moved the ball on a lot quicker than Port after 1/4 time, i swear i thought i was watching the power the way we held the ball up & chipped it around.
Just onto Harry Miller & i can see why Hawthorn dumped him .... was it just me or does anyone else think that he goes half hearted at the ball? Maybe he normally plays better than that but gee whiz he was very average yesterday.
Watching Jeremy Clayton for the first time in a while & as much as i admire the little fella, i do feel that he tends to be a little bit undisciplined at times.
MM , i felt the reason Strut won was accuracy in front of goal. Both games , at Unley and Alberton Sturts accuracy was great. Port had as many if not more shots at goal yet seemed to struggle.
Harry M... yes laziness/half heartedness seems to be apt descriptions. If he thinks he should be playing AFL then he should work as hard as he can

Agree with all of that. Since Bob Clayton returned to the Magpies, there's been an emphasis on junior development again - especially through the West Coast zone - and it's bearing fruit. Hopefully Port will start pushing these kids through soon and off-load some of the high-priced recruits looking for a quick ticket back to the AFL or a nice superannuation earner (North Adelaide must see us coming ...)

No, Harry M doesnt really play better than that. Hes had a few good games this year but that sort of effort has been pretty much standard by him this year. He should be dropped to the reserves. Bring in Clinch or C Miller.
J Clayton has always had a short fuse. He always gives away lots of free kicks. However, his good has always outweighed that bad side. This year, the bad is starting to outweigh the good and its starting to cost the side. How he was named BOG is beyond me.

on my way home and seeing as i live close to Unley oval popped my head in for the last quarter and a bit. Unfair to comment on players performances but Bentley does look alot more comfortable at that level. I am not sure he can make the step up and consistantly perform at AFL level. THomson looked slick (as usual) from what I saw, but it was just great to see a good crowd at the old Unley Oval - top stuff....

Bentley 90% of the time looks a very class act. Got the ball as well as anyone yesterday. Looked quicker than he does at AFL level, showed strength in tackles and good evasive skills. Reads the play well and positions himself appropriately to win the ball. As has been described he let himself down maybe 10-20% of the time with poor kicks which landed in opposition arms (usually over 30+ metre distances). Still, there is real reason to be optimistic about his chances to become a very good AFL player. I think he is better suited to playing behind the ball.
Thomson suffers from the malady of just not getting enough of the footy. Everything he did yesterday when the ball was in his vicinity was stamped with class and polish. He doesn't muck around - his handballs are clean and precise and his foot passing over 30-40m distances is equally accurate.
He just doesn't seem to put himself in the right positions to be in the play more and more alarmingly he doesn't run enough to find space or be where the drop of the ball is. It really stands out in the Sturt side because his teammates run pretty hard and are always presenting to receive the short pass or the handball. We won't have to worry about Thommo looking for cheap stats (ala Kane) because he seems to move to position only when it is required and is likely to benefit the team. Nothing selfish in his play at all.

I thought Grose struggled a little bit early but he improved as the game went on and should hold his place as I was impressed. Took an absolute hanger in the 3rd term I think it was.
Carlile played a pretty good game for Souths today despite being beat. Throughout the game he had 3 opponents and didn't give any of them an inch, I don't think there was a mark taken on him or a goal kick on him for that fact. Also racked up a few possies taking it out of defence.

A friend told me Logan played very well for Glenelg.
Harry Miller is one of the most soft pea hearted footballer I have ever seen
Grose played well in his return to the league side. He held down full-back which allowed regular defender Schubert to go forward and kick 3 goals. He started on Schwarze who was on top in the 1st quarter then he really came into in the 2nd. In the 2nd half he had the job on Lindsay who spent a lot of time resting forward. Lindsay got 2 but I thought Grose held his own physically and used his thumping left foot to clear the zone.
Lonie also started slowly but after 3 quarter time he played a great game. Playing off half back he had a lot of run through the middle and used the ball well with good vision on a couple of occasions when he looked to be in trouble. Played a lot of the game on Batsanis and shut him down.
For the Eagles Batsanis struggled off a flank playing on Lonie. Wasn't helped by some slow forward movement but he couldn't really get into the game.
Stewart played at FB on Michael Wundke who had 8k 5m and 3.2. Stewart seemed to be 2-3 steps behind Wundke on most of his leads and was probably lucky not to concede 5 with Wundke missing some gettable goals.

Hey Ford, can you tell me if he DeLuca actually tried in regards to 2nd efforts. I saw a bit of him a few weeks ago and whilst his ruckwork was OK and he had a few possies around the ground, I found that he just didn't have that 2nd effort in him.
I get the impression that if he doesn't win the possession first go then its a bit unnatural for him to dive around and put pressure on the opposition.

I've seen him in a couple of SANFL games on TV and don't really recall him being around the ball in field play much at all (altho his ruckwork against the Eagles was really good a few weeks back). Funnily enough, in his couple of AFL games I've thought his second efforts were good - he was prepared to dive on the ball at ground level. And Trevena keeps mentioning how he hunts the ball at SANFL level (thank goodness it's not Survivor or we'd all have starved by now ;)). The aggression thing isn't really his go either, but at pre-season training he was getting a roasting from Arnie about that aspect of his game.
............. Funnily enough, in his couple of AFL games I've thought his second efforts were good - he was prepared to dive on the ball at ground level..........
Yeah I must admit that he has shown more during his AFL appearances than what I have seen at SANFL. I wonder if having Matty in his ear during an AFL game gets him revved up for those 2nd efforts.
It's also interesting that he completely dominated Giles the other week - shows that when he's motivated he can hold his own.

Maric has been injured and in shocking form this season so you can't go on that form really, DeLuca was pretty rubbish against North in the shellacking.
