Hey guys, just wondering throughout your sporting careers... how many and different types of injuries you have received.??

My worst proberly my left index finger.. getting crunched between two hockey sticks last year, dislocating and smashing the joint bone into pieces etc... was given the option of having my finger removed or they could try put it back together etc.... I kept it (should of done the chicky!!) and lost quite a bit of movement in it.. cant bend it that far etc, but can still type with it so thats the main thing :P

Also last night at hockey, finally found out what it feels like to "pop" a hamstring... was a bit sore/tight after thursday training went to sprint during last nites game.. and felt like a bubble pop sensation from my hamstring.. and straight away in pain etc n knew i wouldnt be doing anymore running anytime soon :P... so now got the joy of trying to get it to heal and try and find some money to go physio about it etc... and NOT do a Nathan Buckley :P

Im 21 by the way.. too young for this!:P, and obviously other injuries, such as twisted ankles, pulling muscles etc....

Anyways guys and girls, what type of injuries have you experienced through sport?

This is so weird.

I imagined I broke my leg and made this thread a few days after it.

Anyway, not a sporting injury, but I had my right hand slammed in a car door and now have a lump of calcified bone sticking out of my fourth finger.

Not a sporting injury but one time I was riding my bike so fast down a gravel hill hit a pot hole was catapulated in the air right into the river near by dislocating 4 fingers :o However, when it comes to horses I had some interesting ones but can say I have never broken a bone! I have bieng bucked off, reared off, had one clumsy horse fall down a hill and had to throw myself off to prevent being squashed, have had numerous jumping falls like when my horse jumping half a fence (got stuck in the middle!) and I jumped the other landing on my head and with the same horse it jumped a fence to early, near falling over while my face landed with full force to its neck dislocating my jar, which bloody hurt!

I've been pretty lucky with injuries. The biggest ones would have to be a fractured finger that I got when rejecting a shot in basketball (ages ago). I was playing indoor soccer in my school gym and a stage platform fell on my left after getting hit by the ball. That gave me a stress fracture in my ankle and kept me out for a couple weeks. Then another notable one was trying to cappa some kid and landing wrong on my foot. Was not too bad, but it swelled up a little.

Other than that, just strains and a few tears here and there. Not too bad, no serious breaks. I imagine its going to hurt when it finally happens. :thumbsd:

1. Right shoulder reconstruction - not an uncommon injury in sports-playing younger people apparently, had the op last November, was a long-term basketball/volleyball injury. Shoulder kept popping out when I would get a knock from behind when my arm was extended to grab a rebound etc, excruciating agony every time, last straw was when I woke up one morning with it out of socket! Parents had enough, sent me to an orthopaedic surgeon who said "shoulder's stuffed, need a reconstruction" which isn't great news for a 22-yr-old but it's healed up okay so far. So Juddy/Embers/Nickoski et al., I feel your pain boys! :thumbsu:

2. Broken nose from getting ran into on a volleyball court...they had to disinfect the court afterwards because of how much blood I dropped onto it. :o Ash Hansen was on the other side of the net at the time, but this was before he was famous as a premiership-winning Eagle :p (Was an All-Australian training camp, I was WA and he was a dirty Vic :thumbsd:) This one also needed surgery to repair a burst vessel in my nose.

3. Ripped the ligaments on my left ankle when I landed on some fat guy's foot after getting a rebound - he was too lazy to jump so he just stayed on the ground when went for the ball so I ended up landing on him. No surgery, just lots of physio.

And of course all the usual corks/sprains/jars/bruises, but those are the main ones.

- 2 forearm fractures (1 ulna, 1 radius) - 1st one was from footy , 2nd one from cricket
- Recurring Medial tibial compartment syndrome (AKA shin splints) - began 2-3 years just got over it this year. Ruined my junior sports career.
- G2 Hamstring tear (last week) - sprint training (was running late and didn't warm up properly)

...and a couple of minor corkies/bruising from footy too.

Not that much. Fractured finger at indoor soccer when I was goalie and some guy kicked my hand and not the ball. Same sport - about a month later I was playing on the field and went to volley the ball left footed and hit someones leg and broke my big toe.

Right now I have tendinitis of the left bicep muscle from an arm wrestle when drunk. Couldn't work out for about a month.

I did the ACL in both knees which eventually resulted in a TKR of both knees, a torn rotator cuff in the left shoulder and broke my wrist in 2 places. All from football.

I broke my nose at a trampoline park when I was 5. Blood everywhere. That's been my only broken bone so far.

I don't know how though, the amount of times I was thrown off bikes and pushed into rivers and the like when I was a kid. I guess I was just lucky. Or smart.

Although I was fighting with my brother once and I fell face-first into a cabinet and my teeth pushed through the bottom of my lip. Blood went everywhere that day as well.

Sports related I've never had a bad injury. My knees used to swell up after basketball games but I always got over it. I have limited bendability in my right index finger from it being jarred so much.

EDIT: I also had a car roll over my leg once. No major damage. But it was scary. I scared the shit out of the guys I was with, they thought I was dead for sure.

Broken arm twice, broken knuckle.

Worst injury, hit in the eye with a cricket ball...thought I was blinded...you could see the six stitches etched onto my eyeball.

Alright I'll try to get them all.

Osgood Schlattis in both knees, something to do with growing.

Had this weird thing on my big toe where a nerve had gotten to many knocks from kicking the football and my big toe was black for six months. It hurt to kick, so I'd handball a lot, and now get told I probably have kept the habit and handball far to much.

I have since the age of 14, cracked or fractured ribs a total of 8 times.

I have dislocated 3 fingers, 2 at once in a game at Bassendean Oval. It was so cold my fingers were numb anyway, so didnt hurt a lot until after the game. Was an ugly site though.

Probably the most serious injury I had was playing a social game of football. I was knocked out mid air in a marking contest, then someone landed heavily right above my heart with full force. I was unconscious for a long time without breath, and my phys ed teacher who had completed all of his first aid certificates was in tears, and certain I was a goner. I was rushed to busselton hospital, then taken to bunbury hospital. The first time I was fully aware my parents, who were in perth when it happened were in the room, so a good few hours at least. I went back to camp after a day in hospital, but didn't take part in any sport. It ended up I had a heart irregularity from the incident, and it had something to do with my fitness being to high for someone of that age and weight. I was 14 and 179cm and 77kg. Strange, but doesnt affect me anymore.

Since then, I've chipped seven teeth, had sixteen stitches in my lip to sew it back together (I don't wear a mouthguard and my teeth went straight through, 8 stitches inside and 8 outside). I have had osteitis Pubis in both groins, as well as stress fractures in both sides of my lower back. I have dislocated my left shoulder, have scar tissue on both ankles from countless tears or strains of my ankle muscles.

I recently had three stitches put in the top of my head from a spoil which i didnt get a free kick for, still fuming.

At the moment I am out of action with a strain of my ligament in my knee ( cant remember medial or lateral, on the outside of the right knee anyway).

Had a massive corky last year that turned from halfway down my shin to almost my toes yellow and black, didn't miss a week and was absolutely blasted by the physio.

Thats me if I've caught it all, and I have just turned 21.

Edit: Oh and as you do playing WAFL colts at 15, I was knocked out 3 times in six rounds.

Why don't you wear a mouthguard? I hate playing without one

Ive been pretty lucky with injuries *touch wood*

Ive had a few broken noses, fractured my finger (that was at least my diagnosis - just strapped it up) and suffer shin splints

do you have a proper fitted one?

Those chemist ones are crap and bulky. Fitted mouth guards by the dentist are superb. Barely notice it

I have a hundred and thirty dollar mouthguard. It dries out my mouth in 5 minutes of running. As a midfielder I need all the fluids I can.

About 5 years ago I didnt stretch after a race (school cross country) and did something to my hip which was dreadfully painful to walk (had to walk like a crap), stand or do anything and it last about 8 months getting gradually better before I went to the doctors and he said it was only a groin strain and youll be right after two weeks rest. Well he was completely off, after 5 years of this annoying on and off groin/hip pain which when it flared up it was horrible, walking was a nightmare but standing was worse. It was always in my left hip and happened usually after prolonged exercise, ect. Amazingly I could ride horses without any pain (that couldnt be said about walking though) and what was noticiably annoying was a clicking in the hip at times.
To cut a long story short I had enough went to another docters for scans recently and you guessed it I was diagnosed with dreaded 'OP' but am not doing anything at the moment, at said I lived with it so long, it aint getting worse (or better) so unless it really becomes impossible to live with I wont to anything.

Whew, where to begin!

*Two dislocated shoulders (one each)
*Two knees that managed to dislocate weekly (but pop straight back in)
*Dislocations on every finger and thumb (mulitple times)
*Lacerated kidney from backing into a pack and being hit with the knee of a boy that literally weighed twice as much as I did
*Chunk taken out of my right calf muscle from a raised boot with sharp screw-in studs
*Severely damaged right hand severing both tendons and nerves on my index finger and a natural habit of creating too much scar tissue that has impeded the healing of the hand so much that in the eight years since its repair, I still don't have full functionality and likely never will.

And the mack-daddy of the lot;

*16 concussions, the last three of them severe. Final concussion resulting from a heavy kick just above the right temple. Doctors orders to never play football again or risk permanent damage.

Have thought about playing again, but the risks are far too high.

That made me wince just thinking about it. I was hit in the left testicle by a cricket ball smashed back at me in the nets. Swelled up grotesquely and I had to go to Royal Perth thankfully no permenant damage was done (2 kids to prove it) but was a little bit scary. For a while there my name was looking like it was going ot be Adolf.

I think AFL tend to produce the most amount of sporting injuries in amateurs especially dislocated shoulders and broken fingers etc.

Ive had 3 knee reconstructions (2 on right, 1 on left) before i was 23, as i kept dislocating my knee.

Snapped knee cap in half

Broken my arm twice.

Torn ligaments off my ankle.

A few concussions.

countless hamstring strains, coming back from knee injuries.

Dislocated jaw.

All these by the time i was 23. So i had to wait till i was 25 to start playing again, then in my 3rd game back, i tore my rotator cuff in my shoulder and need surgury on that as well.
