View Full Version : To catch a thief

fifth time in 4 years this morning (not counting the stolen lawn edger and shears). 5:30am and the barstard forgot to unplug a wall radio and the cord knocked some CD's on the floor waking me up. I got within 3 metres of him but he was so fast...out of the door and driven away by his accomplice(s) DVD player and mobile phone in hand like lightening.
Police came but they're only interested in speeding drivers and breathalysers. Waste of time paperwork excercise. Then a two hour wait for the glaziers to replace the broken windows.

When, oh when are we going to see some community policing? I have NEVER seen a police car patrolling our streets.

Pretty unfortunate Frodo :(.

Almost every day we have a Security car come up our court during the day/afternoon but I don't think they're out there at night time or early morning.

The only street ive ever seen with security near it at night is where the film neighbours.

The street is closed off and there is a security guard there all night.

Why cant it be like that everywhere

I'm not being smart with you Frodo but don't you have a house alarm?

Our house got done in about a year ago, these scumbags took my mum's jewellery, including my late gran's wedding ring she left to her when she died.

You should invest in an alarm, it's well worth it

I do have an alarm but only use it when out, not whilst sleeping. I am considering upgrading to a zone system.

We have enough police. Get them off booze busses, speeding duty and sitting on their butts. Out on the streets community policing. Booze does not kill, speed does not kill, people kill with a lethal weapon called a car!!! Most speeders and those with illegal alcohol levels would not have caused any harm to the public. Alcohol effect depends upon the size and metabolism of the person (0.05 is an arbitrary figure not related to any specific person), many speed traps in WA are set in ridicuously low areas eg two lanes in either direction, no housing around, speed limit 70 (location of my last infringement, copper said there was traffic lights 2km down the road so speed had to be reduced
What is wrong with police actually patrolling and seeing drivers actually driving unsafeley and then doing them for alcohol or whatever? At the same time they can be looking after the citizens.

Yeah its very creepy docker brat!!!! One night I had to get up to get water and I went down into the kitchen. As I got down the stairs I saw these mongrels getting my TV so I called my dad and he came running down and he caught them and they got charged...from that day on I have always taken a baseball bat with me when I go downstairs for water!

It got even more sickening !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We found my wifes purse (empty) and a screwdriver in the shed at the back of the yard. Now the police got to us within 15 mins of the burglary (car in area). I had chased the guy out the front door and seen them drive away. One thing puzzled me at the time. They broke the window at the back and fled by the front but they also opened the back sliding doors to the yard. Why? Now I can guess. There were two in the house and one had gone out of the back first after hearing me coming and I only saw the second one. The police never went out into the back yard at all but as we have high walls the chances are that thief1 was hiding in the shed whilst they were there!!!!!!!!!!!!! The police went away. We got down to arranging for glaziers etc and theif1 cooly walks away, no doubt using his mobile (or my wifes) to get a pick up from his accomplices. He also dropped a cigarette lighter which may have prints on it.........we have to take it to the police station.

What sort of incompetence or couldn't care attitude is that????

Frodo, if your yard size and lifestyle can accommodate it, I'd suggest you get a dog.

I'm not talking about an empty-headed pit bull or a trained-to-kill guard dog. Something like a Kelpie, a Heeler or even a Labrador could be a handy intruder alarm. The burglars (probably druggies) might think twice about jumping your fence.

The crooks might hit your neighbour's house but at least you'd be safe.

BTW - it's probably a good thing you didn't catch him. He may have had a weapon or if you injured him, the prick would probably sue you.

I have a Neopolitan Bull Mastiff X that is a wuss, except if people come to the house at night, there are a lot of people that would have had to change their undies after they heard Kenny bark at them. :D

Strangely enough I have never been burgled & I don't have an alarm or contents insurance, don't need them. ;)

Tis, true.
I now set the alarm at night and have a baseball bat alongside the bed. Yesterday night there was a false alarm trigger and out I went baseball bat in hand.
I saw my doctor later and she said it wasn't wise because a thief may well disarm me and use the baseball bat on me!!!!

Something to think about but I wouldn't feel right not having a go. After all, I can only die once in this life

I had 2 arseholes the other day try to steal my car from my driveway at about 3am.

Next door neighbour and his dog scared them off. Lovely old guy. :)

Checked my car the next morning (when i was a tad more awake) and noticed that the ignition had been half ripped out.

Had a closer look and saw a key (not mine) sitting in the ignition.

Turned the key.

Car started.

Thank **** for my neighbour.

some ppl have a nerve dont they, they dont want 2 earn anything but are prepared to break into your house while YOU ARE IN IT. god.
how cocky is that? what if you were awake? etc.

you dont even need a large dog to protect your house, even a little one will go nuts and scare them off, even if the dog barks all the time as if they would be game enough to try and steal stuff while thats going on, they would be expecting you to go and investigate the noise and leave.

though i have a dobermann and a sausage dog, the big one sleeps inside and the little one sleeps outside. our house hasnt been broken into for about 18 years or so. now ive put a jinx on it!!

Frodo

Firstly, sorry to hear about your experience and glad to hear you and your family have emerged unscathed.

Secondly, I agree with everything you've said. WA is a very badly policed place because the priorities are wrong. It is the burglary capital of Australia (proportionately) yet they spend all their time on crappy road traffic infractions. The police are there to police, not to raise revenue.

It's not that we need more police, it's that we need them to do different things.

Things have improved in our area with the Council employing a drive around security car (although the driver has limited powers).

We have good locks and an alarm, but as you say, while you're sleeping it's difficult. I'm told it's better not to fight, but I will if it's in my own home (wife and 2 daughters to protect).

I told you you shouldn't live so close to Fremantle!

I was annoyed at the article in the 'wst' this week that shoed how motor vehicle deaths had dropped since using multinova's and rbt.

Not one mention of the fact that in the same period crumple zones, abs braking and air bags were introduced. Of course they had no influence on fatalities did they?

Actually, Blue'n'Gold and myself were lucky a few nights ago. I slipped out into the back yard for a few seconds and left the back door open. Our kids were asleep and BnG was on her comp. I came back, got close to the back door only to see it pushed open, a young bloke ran out the back door, jumped on his pushbike and took off. I went inside to see what was going on and BnG had no clue someone was in the house.

We were very lucky. B'n'G had her handbag close by on the kitchen bench by the backdoor, so I think I walked in at the right time before this tosser managed to grab her bag. I just wished I had grabbed the a$$hole, cause I would loved to have knocked him down and stuck my boots into his ribs before dumping him somewhere out in the sticks and leaving him to find his own way home again.

Why bother with the police? After all, they are too busy collecting revenue for the govt with their multinovas......

Since this thread has been started, i know 2 people who have gone through the very same thing. (yes - SINCE this thread was started)

My uncle and his family were home when they heard a noise upstairs. My uncle ran up to see what it was and saw a guy jump out the window of his son's room, on to a tree, and then off down the street.

And then, a couple of weeks ago, one of our friends got home to see his house trashed. He then went into one of his spare rooms and - suprise suprise - there's a guy hiding under the bed. Our friend proceeds to drag him out, break his nose and his jaw, and then stands on him holding him down with his foot as he calls the police. The police, when they arrived, asked him what happened to the guy to which our friend replied "he fell down the stairs!"

There were no more questions from the police. :D

I have an alarm system but we turn volume down at night because if I go for a drink in the night etc then I have to turn the alarm off which gives two beeps for off and one for on. At full volume turning it on and off wakes Mrs Frodo and viceversa.
But the thought is that the burglar hears the alarm go off and leaves. In this instance the alarm went off, we didn't hear it, the burglar pulled the power on the alarm and continued to steal.
I guess he/she wasn't worried about getting caught.

The best answer is perimeter detection on a night time with all windows and doors having broken glass detectors and contact switches. But the wiring would look so ugly.

And even then iI suspect that some burglars would just accept the alarm going off and still steal. I remember having my car broken into in Amsterdam many years ago in full view of lots of people and the alarm going off. The police there said it was very common and most were drug addicts who didn't care if they got caught.

Is this one of those alarms that when at the appropriate volume makes it impossible to be in the same room - if so we have a similar one in the house I live in.

On ours we can adjust the volume of the beeps without affecting the alarm volume............it also isn't reliant on being plugged into electricity to work - only to recharge the batteries.

We also have sensor lighting around the building which is a good deterent...........

Whats strange though is our house is the only house in the street to not have high fencing and gates at the front of the property but in 6 years we're one of the few houses never to be broken into...............

O.K. guys, I think it's about time we let Frodo in on the joke.

FYI, Frodo, all of these acts of theft have been perpetrated by BigFooty posters. Does it make sense now? All of the proceeds have been liquidated to finance acts of terror against WASPs.

skilts, that is putting the WA posters who don't get on with frodo in the hot seat & makes me suspect number one. :(

Now the expense comes in, changing all the locks etc, that is more of a pain than cancelling credit cards, at least I hope you are changing your locks, I know people who didn't bother, a week later they came home & their whole house was stripped bare, they said they didn't want to waste money changing the locks, because the thief wouldn;t know where they lived, big mistake.

Yep, I agree. They took her driving licence so know our address and her business cards so they know that location to...and they have the keys. So it's a big lock change day today.

But it's the police attitude that sucks. The culprit is a known villain and breaks into cars regularly. Yet they haven't the time to investigate.

Then I see all the police on radar and booze bus duties and it makes me puke.......revenue collectors.
