I don't see how he can be conceived as arrogant. I've met him a couple of times and had a good 30-second yarn while asking for his autograph, and he seems to be a genuinely nice bloke who looks after his fans. To me, James Hird is more than a legend, he is also an all-round nice fella.

Must be lucky, Everytime me or ppl I know have met him, outside of places where he is obliged to be nice(ie family day, training) he has been arrogant. We seen him at Jam factory once, i was with my GF and her 7y/o sis and asked for his Autograph on her Essendon Hat while he was inline to get movie Tix. He signed Straight over Johnsons Signature and then when she Mentioned it to him, He told her to "deal with it" To me thats arrogant

James Hird is a legend absolutely.

Hird is the greatest living Essendon player and it has been a privilege to watch him play.

I've been watching Essendon since 1972. (I was only young)
He is the best Essendon player I've seen in that time.

Probably Ablett and Carey are the only two that come to mind that I'd rate in front of him.

He is one of the few people who can win a game off his own boot.
Like the West Coast game two weeks ago. And so many others as well.

Maybe I was lucky, I was at the airport a couple of times when the Bombers came into Perth, and that's when I got his autographs. Maybe he was having a bad day when you met him. I can, however, understand when players are a bit difficult when signing autographs when they're not supposed to. Fans have got to remember that their heroes have lives to live too. If I had bumped into any Essendon player on the street while they are minding their own business, I wouldn't think it was a good time to ask for an autograph.

From seeing him in the media he looks the type who is easily embarrassed and a bit shy. People mistake that for arrogance when it involves someone famous.

Definately a legend and I'm in the same boat as Mero. He's in my top 3 with Ablett and Carey.

Worst comment ever, have you ever met the man??
Matthew Lloyd I would agree with but Hird is not arrogant

Edit just read further. Well what do you expect? How would you like it if you were bugged in the cinema. Go to any official function and he is very approachable.

James Hird is a Legend not just of the Essendon Football Club but always the AFL, sure he is arrogant, but Arrogant quite often goes hand in hand with Confidence.

He has served the Essendon Football Club brilliantly, even at 34 when he goes near the ball the way he seems to have time and the ability to make something happen.

James Hird was voted the Third greatest Bomber behind Sir D.i.c.k and Coleman and I've come to the concluding it will be a long time before anyone at Essendon comes close to his skill and the courage he as shown to suffer those injuries and comeback from them.

Its interesting that some call him Arrogant, I think for some time Sheeds use to bag him for his background and airs and graces.

I think to get a clear picture of how good he is read Seeds comments in James Hirds book on Leadership.

I think it is a little unfair to base an opinion of Jimmy's character on one incident when he was in his private time (going to the movies), and probably having a bad day.

I wouldn't consider Lloydy arrogant either. He just seems sharply focussed on whatever he is thinking about, until he is rudely interrupted by other people.

Next time before interrupting players, it would be a good idea to politely ask first, if they have the time to sign whatever, have a pic taken etc.

A true legend on and off the field.I hope the Bombers youngsters coming through take note on how Hirdy conducts himself .

Lloyd is a prick, he didnt say 1 word to me while signing something at an official function for player sponsors... Didnt even look at me if i think about it. Thats fine though, as long as he kicks goals

Ah Jules, sorry you had a bad experience at that time.

Players get asked to sign things all the time and usually they have a heap of people surrounding them waiting.

These situations and how players behave don't reflect what they are really like.

You should give Matty another opportunity before you make up your mind.

No - A 7 Year old Went up to him in the line to a movie theatre, with his family not even in sight, and with him doing nothing more then waiting to purchase tickets. If thats the way you would talk to Young Keen Fans of The Club which you captain, then maybe you should play for West Coast!

Wow, how dare, he gets slightly upset, on this one occasion, by being hassled by people by while he using what very little free time he gets to spend time with his own wife and kids. Yet he still gladly signed an authograph and then still had to listen to someone complain about how it was not good enough for them.

Might have been a bit of a jackarse about it, but I could understand how constatnly being expected to free to the public constantly and receive little gratitude for this it would start to wear thin after 15 years.

Don't take it personally. He probably just didn't feel like being approached at the time.
Having said that, if anyone has a right to be arrogant, it's Sir James.

And yes he's a legend :)

LMAO ......:p

Hird is one of the best at Essendon....but,Hutchison and Coleman are before him imo. Even D-ck himself said Bill was the superior player..the best.

Reynolds is now just behind Hirdy in the legend stakes..

4 super stars of the EFC.

A star full-forward
2 rovers
and a star utility.

Hird as a VFL-AFL legend?.....him and Voss stand alone for sheer class, mental strength and courage galore.

I have aways found Hirdy to be a great bloke when i have seen him.saw him at the boxing day test a couple of years back and he signed something for my little boy who loves him to death,my boy sat next to him and hirdy was chatting to him for a couple of minutes, and i said to my boy its time to come back to your seat and hirdy said that it was alright and smiled

Only met him once on the Gold Coast, walked up to him as a gob smacked fan and all I could muster was "Thank you" and shook his hand. he got the conversation going and seemed nice as pie. mmmm piiieeee.

The amount of times because of something he has done on the field or a game he has had, I say "What The Hell, he's done it again" i still growing.

in my opinion LEGEND:thumbsu:

I agree with Tim Watson's comment a couple of weeks back, "greatest player to ever wear the red and black!".

I think footy players can be arrogant though, it must get bloody annoying to get asked for your autograph every minute of every day. I find it annoying having to sign receipts when i use my credit card.

really? Tim Watson said that? I've heard Tim Watson say on SEN when somebody suggested Hird to be the greatest essendon player that"Dick Reynolds is our greatest". And he really pushed the point going on saying "have you not read up on the bombers history".

Of course I've never seen the great Dick Reynolds play but I could not argue with his record.

I agree in that we havent seen the greats in Reynolds, Coleman and co. play, but to witness what Hird has had to come back from and still possess such silky skills.....its really hard to go past him. My Top 3 in no particular order would be Dick, Coleman and Hird. Following them, would be a gridlock of Essendon greats.

My first ever post on this forum and I'm probably never going to post a truer message .
James Hird is a legend .
I could repeat endless stats here , but what's the point , if you're interested you can look them up ; voted 3rd greatest Bomber of all-time , 1996 Brownlow etc etc etc .
Hird was more than just stats though . His leadership of the team and club have been exemplary . No off the field scandals for him , and a consistently high standard on the paddock .
Factor in his grace and elegance , combined with his courage and competitiveness , and you're left with one of the all-time greats .
