View Full Version : Billy Birmingham - The 12th Man

In my opinion, Billy Birmingham's impressions of the cricket commentators have been fantastic over the years and the question I'm asking is what is everyone's favourite album and or favourite quotes, impersonations, etc etc???
For me, it has to be the one he did about the Australia vs Sri Lanka game where we made an umbelievable 3 for 560 off our 50 overs and then had Sri Lanka 6 for 1 when it pis*ed down with rain with the 2 victorians, Merv Hughes and Simon O'Donnell taking a pair of hat-tricks and Bill Lawry going totally nuts in the commentry box!! :D:D:D
Billy Birmingham was great at taking the pi*s our of the likes of Richie Benaud, Bill Lawry, Tony Greig, Ian Chappell & Max Walker... absolutely marvellous stuff that!! Poor Max, trying to get back on the commentry team and the way Richie went on as commentry team captain was a crack up!! :D:D
Has anyone else heard the 2 tracks Billy Birmingham did for the Poms?? It was based on the English cricket team, and was funny as well!! :D:D
So, what does everyone else think about The 12th Man???
Cheers!!

Billy Birmingham is a genius

The earlier stuff was much funnier. I liked the original Wired World of Sports the best - the one with the Australia v Sri Lanka game was a classic too.
The first single he did, "It's just not cricket" was an absolute scream.

Bomber Spirit,
Yeah, I've got that one on cd... the bit where the Pakistani batsman called his batting partner names after he ran him out and the other guy had to retire "hurt", very hurt indeed by those comments was an absolute classic!! :D:D:D
How about some of the earlier names....
Abroke Miandad
Heza Hasbeen
Heneva Was
Borrow the Qadir (car-deer)
Doubledek Abus

This Billy 12thMan fellow make life very difficult for me when I met Aussie gentlemen. The Aussies always laugh when they hear my name, it wasn't till lately I found out why.
It's all because of Billy 12th Man!
He's a very bad man, Billy 12th Man!
But, very funny man too! ;)

Speaking of "Still 12th Man", we were at Waverley Park one day at the footy a few years ago, just after Billy Birmingham released this new cd, and at half time they showed a horse race on the main scoreboard. There was no sound on the scoreboard, and out of the blue my brother shouts out.... "Go Silver Sovereign!!" in his Max Walker voice, and everyone around us just cracked up laughing as they knew where it was from.... it was so funny!! :D:D:D
Cheers!!

But I love them all. But I can't go pass Rick Disneck and Johnny Tapp exploding in the first one.

How funny was Peter Pollock on that?? He was on like 7 second delay and he couldn't hear what Mike Munro and Bill Lawry were saying as they were talking at the same time!! :D:D
I also liked the great Sir Donald Bradman's message to Bill Lawry... "hello!" :D:D
Richie Benaud was also a classic, organising his own function across at the Hilton on the same night as Bill and inviting all the guests but not Bill because he was sh*tty it wasn't him first on This Is Your Life but rather Bill Lawry!! :D:D

".... and wasi out for a duck"
"ofcourse he was tony you ********"
"thats what I said ... wasi out for a duck"

FreoDocker,
Max Walker's commentating cracks me up big time....
"In he comes left foot first, followed by the right, then the left foot, then the right, then the left, then right, left, right in pretty quick succession, arm reaches to the heavens, eyes looking down at the spot he wants to hit on the pitch"
.... and all of that in the time it takes to run in and bowl!! :D:D:D

There was one where Bill and Max were going through the sri lankan team. After saying their names they came to a "graham", which Max pronounced graeeeme (or something to that effect). Then goes on to say he said his name like that to fit him in with the others, to which Bill replies "gee your ****ed in the head sometimes Max".
That always gets me, but I can't remember what one it's off/

rickyp,
I think Billy Birmingham has said that Boned was his last ever 12th man album. Although the fact that Richie Benaud is now continuing on for a couple more years might hopefully cause him to change his mind and roll out another one.

I love his work. It is great that someone saw the comedic potential of that commentary box. Unfortunately Taylor, Slater and co just don't have that same zing.

I just bought the box set for my Dad for Christmas, and having listened all of the albums again in the last couple of days, I'd have to put them in this order:
Wired World of Sports II
12th Man Again!
Wired World of Sports
Still the 12th Man
Bill Lawry... This Is Your Life
The Final Dig?
Boned!
My favourite character would have to be Max Walker :D
EDIT: Swapped around The Final Dig? and Boned. The latter was of a good standard, but pretty forgetable when compared to the rest.

i love em all but im kinda the opposite, the wwos were freaking hilarious, but the behind the scenes portrayal of the commentators took this from being good sketch comedy to sheer brilliance
the bits where bill locks himself in the commentary box to where bill is commentating the ashes and the aussies don't even bother appealing, to me is the funniest thing in sports ever, i remember listening to both of them trying not to laugh to hard because i didn't want to miss bits

So much brilliance...
On Max's streak
"It looks like a baby's arm holding an apple"
"And he shows him the full 3 and a quarter inches of his blade"
"Which you also did today, Max"
"Richie, I think you'll find it's a bit more than 3 and quarter"
On Adam Parore snicking a four:
"When a big kiwi prick gets a four with a snick, thats Parore"
The last over in that match with Tony, Bill and Straya (the pigeon) is hilarious.
I can't rank them they were all brilliant.

hahahaha love the parore call. that is an all time classic. so, so good. think of that one quite often.
also add to that, whenever anything undesired happens multiple times (as richie says just before the parore call when he puts gillespie away) - 'well (pause) there he goes again'.

The Final Dig:
Kerry Packer

Interviews on the radio.

"I think you ought to get a sense of humour."
Richie
"I think you ought to get f*cked."

"Thats a but stuff Ruch"
"A but upsit, a but upsit, luvid would be more like ut"

Gibbo: Anyhow stiff shit and we'll bring you the results of that race at Rosehill a little later in the program.

I love all his stuff, but I still laugh the most at one off his first record.....
Pakistan skipper Ahbroke Miandad... 'Well for ****s sake Ian I don't think we stand a ****ing chance out there that ****ing pitch look at it, it's a ****ing nightmare. I would not be surprised if we sort quite a few injuries here today, and ah also we have lost our strongest batsman Coppedwan Indenutz'
Ian...'Oh did he?'
Miandad... 'No thats his name you ****wit he tore a hamstring'
I also like Richie on WWOS 1..... 'India was also missing their skipper Mohammad Azzabiggun, who was out with a badly swollen foot. But I saw him in the rooms before the match and it didn't look like a foot to me, it looked more like about 8 or 9 inches' :D

I caught myself sounding out the maxophone when the Wide World of Sports update came on the other night :p

From the final dig:
"Oh, **** it."
- The whole Mark Taylor/ Hanse Cronje bit is brilliant ("I'd say its a fair bet they would be shitting themselves, I'll give you the tip."
- "The crowd's chanting WARNEY! WARNEY!"
"Shut up Bill"
"WARNEY!! WARNEY!!
"Shut up Bill"
"WARNEY! WARNEY!"
"Shut the **** up or the bird gets it!"
"........."

IIRC its only about $70, which is a heap of entertainment for that amount of $$$$, bloody hillarious too.
Everyone is forgetting another good pakistani players name;
"Shewez Amed"
The final dig & boned are both underrated IMO. It just takes a few listens to hear all the details in the background that add to the main dialogue.
I especially loved on Boned when Ian & Bill are talking about the memoralabia and have the a picture of the injured English cricket team entitled "a bunch of crocs",
Ian: That'd look good in the bar or the pool room
Bill: Ian, that'd look good on the ***k'in front door!!!!!
His impression of Tubby Taylor and his comm box bit on the final dig with Hansje is gold.
I personally didnt like the WWOS2 as it has that unfunny bit about the tight aussie rules shorts, a low point for the 12th man for me, in an otherwise hillarious career.

I'd actually just about rate 'Boned' even better than the classic 'Still the 12th Man' and 'Wired World of Sports', it's absolutely brilliant imo.

I think Billy's put the queue in the rack for awhile or until something happens that he can link to more channel 9 stupidity.

I thought Boned was pretty average, but The Final Dig? was brlliant. Hansie and Tubbs, Tony with the hair piece, Ray Warren doing cricket commentary, 'When a big Kiwi prick gets a four from a snick that Parore.' etc.
Havent heard Bill Lawry this is your life, but the rest are gold. Bill going nuts at the Sri Lankans is brilliant.
