I haven't seen this posted anywhere else before & a great reminder of how exciting Mods was to watch. Hopefully it can give some inspiration to our forward line, with the Birdman returning this week.

Perhaps we should have a sticky thread showing clips of all of our legends.

This certainly should be. :thumbsu:

Hardly any of his specky's show his hands in the back
Have a look at 1:55 min at his ****ing huge leap!!!

Tony Modra

Birth March 1, 1969,
Recruited from West Adelaide
Height/Weight 188 cm / 95 kg

I used to barrack for St. Kilda (Live in Moorabbin(Melbourne), Adelaide was my second favourite team only because of 1 player...Tony Modra.

When Lockett left I lost my love for the Saints and started barracking for the Crows.

Anyway since I'm all grown up now I've thought how in the hell can a 188cm player kick 129 goals in a year? He was a great athletic specimen, but 129 goals in 90's, it's pretty special when you think about it now.

I've also noticed one other thing Taylor Walker is the same height and is an extremely good player note his A/18 honours with Palmer, Kruezer Masten etc.

Is he cabable of being Modra? He does play CHF so his athletic capabilities must be fairly impressive.

I think Walkers more of a lead up player from what ive heard. i havent seen him play though. Sellar is our next modra. Can take a huge pack mark

With all due respects, he is not a Modra and likely never will be. If he had that potential, we would be talking of him s being a top 3 talent in the draft.

The game was very different back then. You kicked to a contest and you wanted that player to be a go to player in the forward line. These days its about keeping possesion and having multiple avenues to goal. You wouldn't have seen extensive flooding you see today.

The game was made for players like Modra who could use thier speed off the mark to get in front of their opponent and take a chest mark or leap on their shoulders and take a screamer. Half of Modra's marks would be disallowed today.

He was a fine football talent that also had the athletic ability and strength to match it. He apparently never did weights but was holding the record for a bench press at the club. Apparently, he would only lift if someone got his record :D

Modra would be a gun forward today as well but he wouldn't get near the 129 goals mark. Extremely rate for a forward to get a 100 these days. Gherig is the last player to do it in a 2004 prelim final.

Gotta remember, Mods (and Hodges 188cm, Dunstall 188cm and Ablett 185cm) played in an era when key position players were a fair bit shorter than they are now.

It's simple natural progression - look at Sam Newman, he was a premier ruckman in his era, but when he stands alongside today's CHFs and ruckmen he looks like a flanker.

Ahh Mods. The bloke had it all and more. Still remembersing crying after we won the flag in 97. So influentual that year it's a travesty his knee went.

Yeah guys, the game has changed a lot in 10 years hey. So much quicker and skillful now. We will never see a forward like him again. The umpires these days would have crucified him. Touch a bloke in the back nowadays = free kick. Stick a foot on his shoulder = same bloody result. :thumbsd:

too bad he was such a good FF could have made a useful HFF :D

Also about Dunstall being 188cm ... the guy was build like an absolute truck, he was as big as they come and he had the speed to be a very effective FF. If he was playing now he would kick 100 no doubt, his kicking accuracy was up there with Plugger. Probably one of the most strongest contested marks of the ball you will ever see along with Carey.

Then Ablett...185cm...God sent him down from heaven so people could watch football, there was nothing he couldn't do, enough said.

Plugger could take marks if he's out-numbered by 2 players quite easily. GUN

All these players along with Modra even if they debut'd in 2001, they would have better records than Matthew Lloyd I have no doubt about it.
The backmen in their days were much better too, there were some really really good backmen in the 90's.

Whatever happened to that Godra banner. The club should buy that for the Shed.

Nothing better than when the cameras panned across Football Park after Mods had taken a screamer to see that giant GODRA waving proudly.

Man those were the days, I think thats why Roos passing on has left me emotional, it feels like the last chunks of a footy I used to love back then in the 90`s is all but gone.

Bay 144 should take the GODRA banner one week and hold it up, just for laughs.

Would be interesting to see how he would be rated next year, if he wasn't drafted as such a bottom aged player this year.

He was the player nobody hated. As a kid I remember not saying I was going to see Adelaide, I was going to see Modra. We all wanted to bee him. Marks Up you always screamed MOODDDDDDDDDDDRRRAAAAAAAAAAAA everytime you even got close to taking a spekky. It was rare that he had a bad game, and what was it 440 g bangers in 118 games, well speaks for itself.

Thats correct Nikki. Some were mates of mine from other departments. Not really in touch with any of them now so not sure what happened to the banner. (I used to sit right behind it from late 93 onwards).

Used to be awesome to go the game have the banner fly proudly (and frequently) then rush home to watch the replay and see how much air time you got :)

Because he was absolutely dreadful against Melbourne in the first qualifying final, blight moved him to a half back flank and Modra didn’t try. After that it was all about Blighty ego and made an example out of Modra.

On the Monday or Tuesday after that game Modra allegedly walked out of the meeting with blight and quit the club. He was sent back to West Adelaide (cannot remember if he played in there finals) and latter traded to Fremantle.

Blighty had his brain fade moments, some were very good and some were very bad. Trading Modra was one of the very bad ones

Might have to get the Modra video out again and have a watch. I haven’t seen that for a few years, it’s always good for a trip done memory lane.

I had been informed that there was an incident in the rooms after the game between Mods and some of his teammates due to his complete lack of effort. After that display Blight put his foot down and sent him back to Westies (kicked 5 goals I think in the final that he played for them) and was never to be seen in an Adelaide guernsey again.

Imagine a Dunstall or Plugger type player with the 'cant touch the arm when spoiling' rule.

I think Mods would be crucified by the hands in the back rule.

What a fantastic player, had it all the speed, leap, crumbing and the soccer skills, all sublime.

Always knew where the ball was, great football sense.

Am going to try and burn the You tube compilation to a DVD for my junior team.

Got to keep showing this old stuff to keep the skill alive.

Its what makes our game so skillful and unique.

Absolute gun, the guy was an absolute freak and loved by everyone back home in the Riverland. My best mate at the time was obsessed with the bloke

Seems like a bit of an injustice he didn't play in a GF after all he did, but in unavoidable and then unfourtunate situations

Was always odd seeing him in a Freo jumper, especially against us.

chicken or egg?

the real issue is a lack of class full forwards.

Modra/dunstall/Ablett/Lockett would still kick stupid totals today.

I had forgotten how good he was untill i saw this....A mate at work rates him as a favourite Crow Player, now I agree, well maybe:p....

we wll never see his like again, backman play off their man to defend against a lone forward and zone defences will see to that. Notice the teams with the traditional FF are near the bottom end of ladder, ie Essendon and Carlton. Even then you will sometimes find Lloyd and Fev around centre.

He was a complete package, Strength, Felxibility, Agility and Accruacy in front of goal. Hard to have all of these qualities.
