View Full Version : Why don't the umps wear white all the time?

Can't say I had any trouble telling them apart from Geelong last night, and Geelong are one of the main teams they'd "clash" with.

because they like to stand out more and be the centre of attention.

But they're an "important part of the game" aren't they?

The umpires don't wear white anymore so that it is easier to tell them apart from the players, especially when a team is playing in a predominantly white strip.

if the uniforms of the umpires and the jumpers clash, i presume that means that the eyesight of people these days is below that of the past. I am sure that Collingwood, Geelong, Sydney/SM and Kangaroos have worn white for quite a while, with the umps also in white.

It does look better, as do the umpires coats, makes them look more important than standing in a short-sleeve shirt and a baseball cap.

It's to take away the excuse that the players didn't see them when contact occurs.

Because they were sick of supporters calling them "white maggot" ?

I actually find it far more confusing now that they are wearing the rainbow uniform. You actually have to pay attention to know that its the umpire. White at least contrasts with colour- now that you have three teams wearing different colours, it makes it difficult to separate the colours. And then you have the runners on the field with their bright green or whatever outfits. Too many colours.

Plus they look much better in white.

Goal umpires should be forced to always wear top hats.

Such a classic look.

Because the game is modernising Im guessing. Coats arent a good look

Couldn't agree more.

The changed colours for the umpires had more to do with not wanting to be called white maggots than anything else.

I didn't see one incident last night - a tough, hard fought game with a lot of pressure for the most part - where a player mistook an umpire for another player. I doubt it's happened more than a dozen times in the entire history of top class footy. In fact if anything it's clearer - the guy in white is always an umpire, whereas the guy in yellow could be a runner, a security guard, etc... Of course if the umpires wore white all those white away strips would go and the AFL would lose the revenue from selling them. Not that the AFL makes decisions solely around money...

I was searching for a thread on the heritage umpire uniforms to make this very point. Coats and moustaches should be MANDATORY for goal umpires. As someone pointed out last year at heritage round, you can't possibly argue with a guy wearing a coat. He's gotta be some sort of super scientist and thinks on a much higher level than any footy fan possibly could.

Couldn't agree more, theres more focus on the umps than the bloody players. They should wear green uniforms and green face paint so they blen:cool:d in with the grass.

The butcher coats and the top hats are so far ahead of the baseball caps and tshirts it's not funny.

The umpires should just wear this, that way they would confirm what everyone knows ;)

In that case, the AFL fixturing committee should be walking around in this uniform:

Umpires should always wear white, the goal umpires should wear their white coats and their white hats. It's good tradition.

I thought they wore those ridiculous colours due to the sponsorship deals they had with companies like Wizard (the bright orange).

All those flouro colours look crap - but since teams like Freo wear predominantly white strips, the flouros are here to stay.

I completely agree with this, I loved it! It was such a classic look, and reminded me of what watching the footy used to feel like it. The game needs the tradition, all the talk of clashes is just garbage, umpires dont need to be in coloured uniforms at all, they should be in white, as they always were. Goal umpires too, their hats and coats were great, again it looked and felt like real football. Seeing this over the weekend reminded me of how much the game has changed. Not just in ways we have no control over (flooding etc), but even in traditions like this which have needlessly been sacrificed by administrators. And usually without the approval of the general football public. We should also take the numbers of umpires backs, we dont need to know who they are or raise their profile. This thread should be on the main board, try and get a bring back the white uniforms movement happening!

It beats me how we got along for 100 odd years with the all white of an umpire.

Friday night was shocking on the TV with Geelong and the Umpires.

How did we get on for so long without too many problems?

IMO, the umps should wear white unless there's a clash (ala 2003).

I'd love to see the goal umpires in their lab coats again, it's what attracts people to the game. However, umpire uniforms have modified across the world (even umpires in cricket test matches wear a polo top and spray jacket instead of their lab coats) so it's going to be more of a dream than reality.

I much prefer Umpires in white. The only reason they wear the Red, Green, Yellow and Orange is so it 'looks better on TV'. I say lets bring tradition back and have the men in white, IN white for 2008 and beyond!

Bulltish

It is because the AFL is pushing clash jumpers and teams like Carlton, Freo, Kangas, Bulldogs etc. run around in all white strips that look bloody ridiculous as football jumpers............and the umpires are now chucked in whatever

White should have been left to the umpires
