Is anyone sick of seeing a good bone crunching tackle going unrewarded because the player being tackled falls forward and is given a free for in the back?
Happens at least a few times a game which is a pity considering that strong tackles are great to watch.

"great tackle! - uh oh no you didn't"

"great tackle! - uh oh no you didn't"You don't get frees for good tackles, some of the best tackles see players get kicks away.

It has me yelling at my TV during games that I don't even care about. It irritates me 100x more than the new hand in the back rule.

There was one tackle, I think it might have been last night even, was it Chapman? Harley? I dont know. But it was a perfect tackle from behind, but just the motion carried the tackler onto the body of the player he was tackling, and it was a push in the back. I mean...ridiculous.

Well than there not "Good tackles" a good tackle doesnt result in a free....

Even in juniors you are taught how to tackle well (if your coach is half decent)... as in if your chasing from behind you need to drop your knees and pull the player back as hitting the ground... so you dont inadvertently push the player in the back and give away the free... I mean whats the point, all the hard work and chasing just to give the opposition a free kick.

It does sometimes, when its not so obvious the tackler really did get into the back of the ball carrier. But the umpire is on the spot and better able to interpret what happened. As BadSeed said, the rule is there, players just need to turn the player in the tackle or get close enough to hold them up without pushing them forward. Great tackles are great, but the guy with the ball is the playmaker (most of the time). If you don't tackle according to the rules it may be bone-jarring, but its not a great tackle.

what frustrates me, is when a player feels the contact, falls forward and the umpire gets sucked in. its very easy, unless the tackler comes from straight on, to fall so that the tackler falls on top of you and win a free kick. it sucks, because just like the whole "ducking" thing, if the player contributes to the contact than he should not get a free kick.

having said that, i completely disagree with the statement "Good tackles not rewarded"

the tackler is not rewarded. in fact no free kick in our game is a reward. they are all penalties.

in the back
out on the full
holding the man
tripping
over the shoulder contact

none of these reward the player getting the free kick, they penalise his opponent. likewise a player should not be rewarded for making a good tackle, the tacklee should be penalised IF he has had a chance to get rid of the ball and didn't.

and this is what i believe is one of the fundamental problems with the holding the ball rule at the moment. the umpires get caught up and love paying a free for a good tackle, but often the player has had only half a second to dispose of the ball after he has taken possession.

unless you are chris judd, then you can have all the time you want.

That is a very good point.

Seems to me the umps have gone 180 degrees on tackling this year - too often they are "rewarding" a great tackle even where the tackled has had no opportunity to get rid of the pill. You need to find a balance that appreciates a great tackle but still gives the benefit of the doubt to the player attacking the ball. Increasingly, you see players hanging off the ball too scared to take possession - that's not a good thing for the game.

Is there a hierachy of Free kicks is one put before another? I love the tackels and i get frustrated when they call it in the back after being run down perhaps if two frees occus simeltaniously there should just be a bounce cos I'm sick of one guy putting his body on the line and running down the opposition only to get a free paid against him!

If it was a really really good tackle, then the player should be tackling correctly. So, turning the other player on their side and basically trying not to get in the way of their back. Unfortunately sometimes, due to momentum etc, the player laying the great tackle is penalised.
