Hawks left on hold
HAWTHORN has informed the AFL of a communications fault in the coaches’ box at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.
The Hawks coaching panel had only one working phone to the players’ bench during the first half of the round 14 match against Adelaide.
Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson, equally enraged about his team’s dismal performance, showed his frustration by wrenching the phone from the wall during the game.
The club notified the AFL of the faulty communication line on Monday.
Although, the second phone line was repaired at half time, it did not work for 20 minutes throughout the third quarter when the Hawks scored 1.1 to the Crows’ 3.5.
Football operations manager Mark Evans confirmed the club had made a complaint to the AFL.
He said Clarkson was unable to direct messages to the bench and had to relay them through Evans who had access via a headset.
The AFL has requested a report from ground management at AAMI Stadium.
And, as if the Hawks’ frustrations and lowly score line of 4.7 (31) were not lowly enough, they also received an early wake-up call at their Adelaide hotel.
Players and staff were awoken at 4am on the eve of their match by a blaring emergency alarm.
They were told to remain in their rooms and to be on alert for the following 10-15 minutes.
Hotel management later apologised for the faulty alarm system.
