Terry won't be tank engine

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace believes any suggestion of the Tigers tanking games to secure the prized No. 1 draft pick is an insult to him and his players.

The bottom-placed Tigers are on track to finish last and thereby get first pick at the best young talent in this year's national draft — provided Carlton does not lose all its remaining games and get the top selection under the priority system.

Wallace admits there are some club administrators who would be happy to finish down the ladder to get higher picks, but found the suggestion of him derailing his own side hard to stomach.

"We've had it mentioned not to us but around the edges from media, that you go into games and you're not trying, and suggesting you're playing blokes in positions where they shouldn't be playing," he said. "To me, that's an insult to us, trying to do our job.

"If I was going into games picking blokes in positions where I thought they wouldn't be best-served to the playing group, I would be letting the players down.

"Do officials in football clubs perhaps hope that they stay low so that they can get a high draft pick? I'm sure they do. But if you're talking about the playing group, the coaching group, that are working on a day-to-day basis to try to win each game, why would you be coming into work … if you're not having a go, trying to get a result?"

Wallace understood the dilemma some lowly clubs faced when planning for the future and picking young players, as opposed to picking the best available talent.

He said he always would pick his best side and reward good form, otherwise there was no point in having Richmond-listed players running around with Coburg in the VFL.

He noted the No. 1 pick did not guarantee the best young player anyway, and used West Coast superstar Chris Judd — taken at No. 3 in the 2001 draft — as the prime example.

Wallace said the Tigers owed it to their supporters to put in their best effort each week to ensure they kept attending games.

"We want our supporters driving to the game thinking they're going to be a chance each time they go to the footy, not driving to the game wondering whether the Tiges are having a dip or whether they're going to get belted," he said.

Richmond, at least, can be of some influence in 2007, as its remaining eight opponents are all vying to play in the finals, starting with Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday.

"We would like to have sides who are playing us in the last part of the season to be (thinking), 'This is not going to be a pushover, this game … could have a major impact on where we stand ourselves,' " Wallace said. "But if you're looking for only that as external motivation, I think you're going down the wrong path. We've got to look at what we're doing ourselves and how we're playing our game and the natural improvement."

Wallace said he would take little note of Hawthorn's most recent result — a 71-point loss to Adelaide.

Make no mistake about it; Richmond will be up for Sunday, if we don't approach Sunday's game as we have most others this season we will invariably get rolled.

Its paramount that we don't underestimate the capabilities of the Tigers, who apart from a few hiccups have been competitive this season.

Terry isn't a Tank Engine?

Round 21, 2004 was the biggest display of tanking I have ever seen in my entire life.

Sure, both sides gave little fight, but the coaching abilities of Terry really came to the forefront that day, I felt.

And no, i'm not talking about his coaching 'skills' in regards to winning matches.

Wallace began coaching Richmond in '05.

That games greatest highlight was McDonald and Frawley trying to outcoach each other

.

Tanking is a word, I believe, is not in the vocabulary of any AFL coach. Fullstop!

I would go as far as to say it is figment of imaginations of posters of the likes of BF members who are really not on the money when discussing the game of professional AFL.

It is such a load of baloney.

Some fans think teams tank when they pull out experienced players for youth.

But you have to consider if you were a young team like Richmond, and your season is over, it would be good to rest the older bodies so their ready for a full preseason and test the kids of the future. And especially test the kids fighting for a spot on the senior list next season. Some fans get deluded and think teams purposely loose, but I am sure every man has enough pride then to allow their team to loose.

But losses will come more likely when trying new youth, and if thats called tanking then fans are delusional.

Terry and team losing games on purpose.
Naaah, they have played their guts out to get where they are.

I actually think they are playing above their ability.

Well I look stupid now!

You're close actually, Phil - he either had been appointed coach or was the front-runner before that match, & did comment that he hoped Richmond finished last to secure the number one pick.

The media would have a field day if they went through all of Terry's contradictory comments over the years, but obviously they can't be bothered.....

I think we are tanking however given Melbourne's win last week we can afford to win a game now - the critical thing for us is bloody Carlton - fair chance they won't win again and they will therefore get the first pick.

The whole notion of "tanking is absolutely ridiculous. What people are asking us to believe is players go out and deliberately lose, just so they can be delisted at the end of the season? And a team who has won 1-2 games up to round 18 then is expected to win 3 of their last 4 games, otherwise they are tanking? What a load of crap.

I remember 2004, the Hawks defeated Richmond to get off the bottom of the ladder, and we were STILL accused of tanking.

Guaranteed that if we beat the Tiges on Sunday it will be considered a tank (regardless of the margin). If we lose the Tigers supporters will be raving. Really its a win-win situation for them and lose-lose from a supporter perspective.

The only important thing for us is to smash them by 10+ goals to get our percentage back up after last weeks train wreck.

Coaches don't tank - it could cost them their job.
Players don't tank - they might get delisted.
Supporters get tanked - it's their right!
