There are a lot of us myself included that have thought GIA had been soft this season but credit where is due he showed a lot of courage against north when he got crunched by Archer that continued on for the rest of the game
and last week as well. Keep it going GIA

I have noticed the same thing myself. Wouldn't be surprised if he steps up further this week again to fill the void of not having Westy. I've seen him do the in and unders before with good effect.
Everyone has been praising higgins efforts that resulted in Aker's goals, but i've watched the replay many times and i think Gia deserves just as much praise if not more.
I also noticed that Gia has given the white boots the flick and had the black boots on for the past two weeks!

Akers first goal was the result of some good body work by Gia, initially I thought it was Harbrow but he got in between the Port players and laid a bump which let the ball spill towards a running Higgins who passed to Aker. It was a great effort.

He's been showing a lot of leadership of late.

I almost think he needed a tough start to the year and a bit of scrutiny, he's certainly turned it around over the last few months and has been playing some good football. Each week he's getting better, let's hope he keeps his body right rolling into the business end of the year.

I've been critical of Guido this year, but not for being soft physically. I think he has been soft mentally (i.e. peeling away from contests expecting a loose ball, etc) earlier in the year, but certainly hasn't been soft physically - when he's needed to use his body he has. Good to see he's reaping the rewards, but I also think it's been because he's further away from goal, where he can freeze up at times whne taking a shot under pressure. A few years back, he was leading the AFL goal assists, and I think this is where his strength lines, not as a goal kicker, but a goal maker.

The question is, why does it take for half out midfielf to be injured before certain players decide that they have to do more. Shouldn't it be that it their mentalilty to do more and do the hard stuff each and every week??
Credit to coons for realising this before we had massive injuries, Gia, I think is a product of having no choice. I hope he continues to grow and be more courageous once these players return, he has no choice now that he has proven he can.

Gia was brillant in 2005 & 2006 because whilst he had the silky skills, and was an accurate kick for goal in 06 with something like 11.2 (missed six or so games also), he was a bit of a in & under player. Not in the West or Cross mould, but he often would do the scraggy type of things. That's what I loved about Gia, but when he's playing bad, this side to his game is not within a hundred miles.
It's good to see the last two weeks he's been putting it much more of an effort. This is the sort of game, inside & outside, that had him leading our B&F prior to injuries in both 05 and 06.
If he's on his game, he can be a very dangerous player.

I doubt very much whether he's changed his outlook or attitude. I think when players are out of form, their efforts often look pathetic and supporters think it's an attitude problem. I might be wrong, but I don't think Gia ever had an attitude problem, just a form problem.

yep it's the boots. :D
I'm very happy with gia's improvement in that area.
I think that's what he needs to become the player we need.

you don't need to be in form to put your head over it and lay some tackles, bump, scrag and get tough st the contest.
He has a serious attitude problem come game time and goes missing because he doesnt want to get his own ball. It has shown in the last few weeks that his attitude has changed, he's still getting the ball as much as he used to, butit's more about his application when he doesnt have it and that is all about attitude and hard work my friend.

Yep Great thread.
His efforts over the last two weeks have gone a long way towards paying back some of his lacklustre performances earlier on this year. His last five minutes against port were really influential, he is an immensely talented player , but as has been described on previous postings; tends to go into jogging mode.
With a really tough run home a lot of responsibility is going to fall on gia ,coon to step up to the plate and be the game busting players they can be . If we make the finals we will be a threat;its getting there thats going to be the challenge.

I knew what you were saying first time around. I'm not certain that you're wrong but I'm not certain you're right either. Often lack of confidence presents as lack of application. I can't always tell from the boundary which is which I don't think you can either. You have to find the ball to put your head over it. In some respects I thought Gia was trying too hard a few weeks ago. He was running, but not to where the ball was.
