What about the bands that do suffer because of Napster??

And how would you feel if you owned a milk bar and people were allowed to come in and take anything they wanted for free. Its the same thing. Sure, he is rich, but his music is why his rich and he's earnt all the money he gets from the music he makes and he deserves it.

Just because he's a millionaire doesn't mean people should be able to steal his work

Name one.

You obviously never heard of the cassette tape either. This sort of thing has been going on for years it's just in another medium now.

Does it make it right? no.....but owners of copyright learn to live with it.

Spot on, and tape-swapping and downloading have been the two best ways for many people to get into new music over the years.

Back in high school in the late 80s/early 90s, I got into a lot of bands from borrowing tapes, and then spending the hard earned $ on the CDs later. Metallica was one of those bands, and they have made a bundle off me.

These days tapes are basically just for the car, and swapping music is done electronically through Napster, Morpheus, WinMX etc... There are many bands I have researched or experimented with through downloading, and have proceeded to buy their entire back catalogue.

So what would Lars think of someone who downloaded two Metallica songs, and bought a CD, and liked it enough to buy the whole Metallica back catalogue, bought concert tickets. merchandise etc etc?

Two sides to every coin.

Well Metallica have been around since before mp3's , and I don't recall him standing on his soapbox regarding cassette tapes.

Maybe he did, but went off on tangents about Diamond Head and NWOBHM, and no one really cared what he said anyway...

Maybe he would have if it was practical. God forbid he'd try to stop his work being stolen

Obviously you weren't around when the tape levy was introduced. That was supposed to go back to all the artists whose works were being "pirated" as compensation.

Otoh, 3 or 4 good songs on an album is not exactly value for money. Perhaps the record companys would do better to release quality as opposed to quantity in the hope of making it worthwhile for most people to part across with their hard earned cash, but that's another argument altogether.
