View Full Version : Gazza and Varcoe hit with the flu!
Team Extreme
11 Jul 2007, 18:50
Reported on channel 10 that both didn't train and were asked to stay away from the team.
It would be a massive loss if they both didn't play and with Prismall injure who knows who would replace them!
Hope they will be right by Saturday.

If its flu they will be lucky to make it but it is probably more likely to be a bad head cold or upper respiratory tract infection in which case they should be ok by Saturday.

a rat? for real?
Ok the first thing your gonna need is a decent rat trap. Not a tiny little one either. A dirty great big one as obviously we are dealing with one big mofo of a rat assuming your PC isnt set up in the kitchen and you can smell it from the office
Once that babies set up - remember - go with peanut butter. Those cagey little things know how to handle the cheese.
good luck soldier.

Is there a link to this somewhere? Hope it'll pass by Saturday if true. Although even if he wasn't 100% they'd probably play Gazza anyway, if not Trav.

antibiotics ;)
Antibiotics are useless against viruses such as the flu.
I reckon they'll be alright to play, they just won't hang around the team until gameday.

Exactly.. And I'm no doctor or anything, but wouldn't an athlete with such good fitness, diet, etc, get over an illness like this quicker compared to 'regular' people like ourselves?
Anyway, fingers crossed they are both out there on Saturday.
PS. Love ya name there!! Lol, "No, no.. Homer.. you have a, um, Royal 'Sampler'". :D

Could explain why Varcoe wasn't there too. He runs himself into the ground chasing after defenders if we lose the ball in our 50.

it is my understanding that athletes feel the effects of flu's worse than us mere mortals.

Go CATS!!

I think if is common that exceptionally fit athletes are more susceptible to infection viral/bacterial (obviously a generalisation) but that they also are able to get over the effects of the infection and back to 100% at a quicker rate.

Nutrition advice for athletes: Keeping your immune system strong for winter training
By Monique Ryan, MS, RD
This report filed February 2, 2005
Cold and flu season are still lingering and with your training program switching into higher gear for the 2005 racing season, nutrition strategies for staying healthy remain a top priority. You don't want a viral infection to slow down your workouts and hamper your fitness, so that you can be race ready for this season. This column focuses on some nutritional strategies that you can practice in both your daily diet and nutrient supplementation, and specifically around training sessions in order to give your immune system a good boost.
From a nutritional perspective, it is key to prevent deficiencies and consume optimal amounts of nutrients that play an essential in maintaining a healthy immune system. Periods of heavy training are also associated with a depressed immune function and compromised immune function can be further aggravated by inadequate nutrition. The body's susceptibility to a respiratory infection can be elevated for 24 hours after a tough workout, and a demanding race can impair your immune function for one to two weeks. Combining training with school and/or work can overtax an endurance athlete's resources, stress your body and compromise your ability to fight infection. You are also likely to be exposed to individuals with a cold or the flu over the next few months. A strong immune system should result in fewer colds or viruses, and if you do get sick, recovery should be quicker

Thanks mate. :thumbsu:
Also, elite athletes suffer from viruses etc. more often than most. Not sure about the duration though. The reason is this;
Elite athletes are continually putting their bodies through stress due to the training required.
Stress on the body results in the release of the hormone Cortisol.
Cortisol is an immunosuppressant. This leaves the immune system less able to fight off the onset of colds, flu etc.
Grant Hackett is a classic case. Poor guy's as fit as a trout, but is always sick!

not if it's that wicked new flu from NZ which has been killing small children.
It's a real wicked flu. I had it when it first came out. I was fully laid out for 2 weeks. It'll take Gazza at least a full week, maybe less maybe more.
But hopefully he wont get so goddamn sick as I did.
