No Scott West, no Daniel Cross and probably no Chris Grant, but Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade says there is still no excuse for not beating Essendon in Saturday night's AFL match at Telstra Dome.

Only percentage separates the Bulldogs (seventh) and Bombers (eighth), who are among four teams on 8-6 win-loss records.

Given the closeness of the ladder, Eade described this weekend's fixture as a "mini-final" and the first of many crucial big games in the run up to the finals.

"In that situation both teams would be ... full-stream ahead," Eade said.

"I think teams will have that really for the next eight rounds, it's that even the competition and it's going to ebb and flow.

"The good thing for us and the teams who are a only a game out or just right on it, I think the future is in your own control."

Gun midfielder West has been ruled out with a groin strain he suffered against Port Adelaide last week, while Cross and Ryan Griffen remain on the sidelines with knee injuries.

But Eade did not rule out the possibility Grant could make a full recovery from a hamstring strain and line up against the Bombers.

The 34-year-old Grant did not train at Wednesday's closed session at Whitten Oval. "Grant is in doubt, so we don't know whether he'll play. I won't really know 'till Friday," Eade said.

"Injuries or suspension is no excuse for any team. We've had our fair share and we coped well last year."

The Bulldogs picked up their third win from the past four matches last week, overcoming a fast-finishing Port Adelaide in a performance Eade said had given the team plenty of confidence.

"Our problem this year has been our inconsistency," Eade said.

"We've had some big games the last few weeks and we've won three of the last four and we just need to keep winning.

"I think it's just the importance of each game and hopefully that importance is able to get the players really focused on winning.

Well said Rocket. The time is now, if we want to make the finals we have to beat Essendon this week, it's as simple as that.

In some strange, twisted way not having Westy might actually force the rest of our midfield to lift that extra bit and get us over the line.

I think Granty will play.

Yes, Aker mentioned the same thing in one of his articles ( see Aker articles thread).

Same I think Grant will play also.

Pretty much spot on by Eade there. Essendon have their share of injuries too, so it's not a valid excuse.

A win on Saturday night, and we're in with a huge chance for a top four finish.

We CGBLS members have to keep the faith. I just want to see another repeat of last week's performance by the great man. It was like the mid to late 1990's all over again.

Yes, he really turned back the clock a few years...vintage Grant. CGBLS members will all be praying he plays this week. :)

Off topic. I noticed Williams wore runners in his first couple or so matches. Havent noticed as of late and am just wondering if he still does.

On topic. Grant i doubt will play, i dont think he will be risked. The dogs arent as stupid as the saints to rush players back from injury. Although i would love him to play. Now just to clarify, is it a strain or tightness?

Strain= out
Tightness= 50/50

I'd like to share your optimism, but at the moment they're fighting off competitors for just making the 8. In a few weeks time they'll be primarily playing top 4 aspirants, so they could either rise right up there or fall A LONG way...

Massive month. Win 3 of 4 and they make the finals and have a crack at top 4. Win 1 of 4 and well...

Must beat Essendon. Focus on the first part of the job.

Tightness.

But that can lead to a strain, so if there's any tightness at all, he won't play.

And re; Williams they're not actually runners lol They still have the gripping and spikes etc. below them. A lot of midfielders wear them as it's supposed to wear better on the feet.

Ok thanks, so they are similar to golf or running spikes i take it.

Exactly.

I still think we're struggling a bit. We can't play a whole game, and I reckon we've even struggled to play 3 quarters.

Still, we're in a OK position considering. I just hope they turn it around, otherwise I can't see us making the Finals playing like the way we are, let alone contend for Top Four.

Next 3 weeks are the decider. If we play well and can win 2, we're a good chance IMO.

Yeah, basically.

If you go to Rebel Sports, you'll see a few.

They generally have shorter spikes/gripping, hence they feel better on the feet, but you can slip and slide a bit.

Considering Williams' troubles regarding his foot, it makes sense to have more of a regular running shoe on then a hard & stiff football boot.

I think the bombers outs will hurt them more than ours, although clearances is a worry, I think we'll be ok with Cooney, Boyd, Guido, Higgins and Darcy in pretty good form.
