Set in 1978, Detroit Rock City follows the hilarious misadventures of four high-school friends and their quest to see their heroes, KISS, live in concert in, you guessed it, Detroit. When a religious fanatic parent burns their KISS tickets, believing that KISS stands for Knights In Satan's Service, the four 'KISS Army' soldiers must battle, well, everything that could possibly go wrong, in an effort to see, in person, the 'loudest band in the world.'
...Detroit Rock City is a wonderful, funny film that manages to strike a nice balance of John Hughes teen comedy and late-'70s period piece. The performances are all quite good and the soundtrack manages to help capture the time brilliantly. There is even a cameo by Playboy Playmate and late-night-cable staple Shannon Tweed that provides for one of the more funny and inventive attempts to procure the coveted KISS tickets. The lively direction by Adam Rifkin lends an almost comic book-like feel to the proceedings, which only helps add to the nostalgic feel of this film.
I watched this movie last night. Being a KISS fan, and a heavy metal fan, I couldn't possibly not like it. It's a high energy, very amusing piece of fluff, well written and well worth a look. Definitely recommended for metal fans. Just don't take it too seriously.
The movie fades a bit towards the end as the plots become silly and more and more contrived, but overall it's still lots of fun. The Soundtrack has lots of great music by KISS and other top rock acts from that era like Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, and The Runaways.
