For sure, that should have been the finale for TUF 3. I give the edge to Bisping though.

Disappointing news. It also leaves the UFC without a main event for the show. Chuck vs. Griffin is the only fight I can see being marketable enough to headline.

What's the likelyhood that Wandi will retire soon? 3 years ago he would never have backed down on any fight for any reason.

wand said he was offered sept & nov to fight chuck and he's chosen nov. it's now up to the dana and chuck as to whether they reschedule, although I think they'd now be pretty wary considering how many times this matchup has been attempted. can you imagine the feelings should they delay till november only for wand to pull out last minute?

Yea, I wanted to see what Silva had to say himself. It didnt sound like him to flat out turn down the offer.

From mmaweekly:

Wanderlei Silva responds via video posted on his website to the allegations that he turned down a fight with Chuck Liddell for UFC 76 in September.

In the video Wanderlei stated, "I never said that I wouldn't fight Chuck. I've wanted this fight for a long time."

The former Pride champion continued, "I received a contract with two options, I could fight in September or November. I have chosen to make this fight in November. I was the first to want this fight, but they kept avoiding this fight. Now there's a lot of people saying that I have ducked Chuck. This is not true."

According to Silva, the timing for the fight to take place in September did not work for him. He explained, "I am in a moment of transition in my life. I'm going to move to the U.S. in a few weeks. I'm going to live in the U.S. and there's a lot of things happening, and I'm not focused on training the way I want to be. I always fought at the time the promoters wanted. Sometimes I did things I should not have done, but this time I won't do that anymore."

Denying he ever turned down a fight with Chuck Liddell, Silva said, "I want to fight chuck in November and make a huge show, and make it the biggest show ever...I have no doubt it's the most important fight of my life. I know Chuck is a great name in the U.S., we'll have a great fight. I think I must be in my best shape, so I want to take this time to train better and be in my best shape ever."

Wanderlei asserted, "This fight is on, if he (Chuck) doesn't hide behind this mess."

Hopefully they do it, I reckon Dana has pushed this fight quickly because he knew Silva wouldnt have been as ready - he did this with Jackson IMO, and obviously didnt work.

hmmm - I hope this is a joke. Greg Jacksons gonna add another L to his ledger here:

UFCjunkie.com Exclusive: Chuck Liddell vs. Keith Jardine to Headline UFC 76
Posted by UFC Junkie on July 13, 2007 at 3:37 pm ET

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell (20-4 MMA, 14-3 UFC) and Keith Jardine (12-3-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC) are expected to headline Anaheim’s UFC 76 event in September. A source close to one of the fighters told UFCjunkie.com (www.ufcjunkie.com) of a tentative agreement that was reached earlier today.

Jardine will take the spot vacated by PRIDE standout Wanderlei Silva. Earlier this week, UFC president Dana White said that Silva turned down the UFC 76 fight with Liddell despite having a verbal agreement in place. UFCjunkie.com first broke the news of that agreement, but for reasons still unknown, Silva apparently opted not to take the fight.

Instead, Liddell will face Jardine, a cast member from The Ultimate Fighter 2 who worked his way into title contention before suffering a shocking, 48-second upset to UFC newcomer Houston Alexander back in May. Prior to that UFC 71 loss, Jardine had posted a 4-1 record in the UFC — with his only loss coming via a controversial unanimous decision to Stephan Bonnar at UFC Fight Night 4.

The loss to Alexander erased all the momentum the 31-year-old had gained after his dominating first-round TKO victory over Forrest Griffin at UFC 66. It was the biggest win of Jardine’s career. But the Team Jackson fighter now has an opportunity for an even bigger one.

Liddell, who had held the UFC’s light heavyweight title since April 2005, suffered a first-round technical knockout to Quinton Jackson at UFC 71. The May 26 loss was the 37-year-old’s first defeat in eight fights.

The future UFC Hall of Famer’s upcoming fight with Jardine will be his seventh consecutive main-event fight.

The fight with Jardine — “Plan B,” if you will — may be a letdown for many hardcore MMA fans. After all, the proposed Liddell-Silva bout had been one of the most-anticipated fights in the sport’s history. The UFC, and specifically White, had tried to arrange the matchup for years but experienced one snafu after another. During a UFC 61 event in July 2006, White event went as far as announcing the fight was going to happen — only to later blame the then-owners of PRIDE for keeping it from happening.

Liddell and Jardine are expected to officially sign a deal for the fight soon.

UFC 76 takes place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Sept. 22. UFCjunkie.com has learned that a fight between 170-pound contenders Diego Sanchez and Jon Fitch (a fight UFCjunkie.com exclusively announced last weekend) likely will be billed as the night’s co-main event.

Main event for UFC 78 was announced today - Michael Bisping vs. Rashad Evans. A fairly weak main event, but I'd prefer to see it than an Ortiz/Evans rematch. It's also the first time two TUF winners will fight. Between injuries, Sherk's steroids appeal and Tito not wanting to sign there weren't much else the UFC could headline this show with.

The undercard on UFC 78 should be great though
Houston Alexander vs. Thiago Silva
Karo Parisyan vs. Hector Lombard
Dave Terrell vs. Ed Herman
Frankie Edgar vs. Spencer Fisher

Also, Nogueira's set to fight Cheick Kongo at UFC 79 while there's rumours that Chuck/Wanderlei will still go ahead. BJ Penn vs. Joe Stevenson is also meant to be on the card, most likely for the lightweight title if Sherk's appeal fails.

Damn, looks like Cro Cop is done with the UFC too. Apparently he didn't want to take a pay cut and is going to fight in Japan for Dreams, which is the combination of K-1 Hero's and the former Pride staff. Hope he at least gets to fight someone decent like Kharitonov but I fear they'll just feed him some undersized Japanese cans instead.

Latest on Fedor is that his M-1 promoters are planning a TUF-style TV series with 16 fighters where the winner gets the 'reward' of having his arse kicked by Fedor. Fedor probably is still the top HW in the world but his managers have no interest in testing him out and are milking him for all they can. It blows.

Yeh, I still do think he wants good competition, I just reckon he wants it on his terms rather than the UFC's which bby accounts can be quite draconian. I'm still hopeful for a fight with Couture this year.

Fedor's demands were pretty silly. He wanted mega bucks (fair enough), but only for a 1 off title fight, and co-promotion with M1. The UFC isnt going to let Fedor come in, beat their guy and then go back to Russia, as well as promote a rival company. He also wanted a bunch of fights for guys at his gym (of which most are crap)

I think Koscheck would own Leben in a rematch. Kosi looks like a real contender in a few years. In tuf1 he was just a wrestler and I didn't put much stock in him. IN his later fight against Diego the improvement was in the order of magnitude higher. Still a bit lay and pray but got a lot more respect for him now.

The UFC's had no luck recently, for 85 Leben had to spend time in jail after turning himself in for a probation violation and Irvin's broken his foot so Evans is off the show completely. Meanwhile, Coleman injured himself in training and so his fight with Lesnar is off.

I also updated the first post again to include a few non-UFC events, there's some great stuff coming up, particularly Affliction's debut show with Fedor vs Sylvia. EliteXC's CBS show next weekend looks great if you like knockouts, all five fights should be slugfests.

There's a few good cards coming out in the next couple of months. To name a few of the bigger matchups...

UFC 88: Breakthrough - September 6, 2008

LHW Bout: Chuck Liddell vs Rashad Evans
LHW Bout: Rich Franklin vs Matt Hamill
MW Bout: Dan Henderson vs Rousimar Palhares

Three of the UFC's biggest names, all in tough fights. The card also features Nate Marquardt, and I'm interested in seeing Roan Carneiro again, despite his disappointing last appearance.

UFC Fight Night: Diaz vs. Neer - September 17, 2008

Not a big name card but I personally am eager to see all six of the main card fights, especially Guida vs Danzig. Few fireworks on the undercard too, with McFedries and Sakara.

UFC 89: Bisping vs. Leben - October 18, 2008

MW Bout: Michael Bisping vs Chris Leben
LHW Bout: Lyoto Machida vs Thiago Silva
LHW Bout: Keith Jardine vs Brandon Vera
LHW Bout: Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs Luis Cane

The main event, being in England, is obviously Bisping vs Leben, but most of my interest in this card is Machida vs Silva. Huge hype on both of them and the winner could could a title shot down the road, or at the very least, a number one contender fight. Heavyweight newcomer Shane Carwin is on the undercard, as is one of my favourites, Akihiro Gono

UFC 90: Silva vs. Côté - October 25, 2008

MW Championship Bout: Anderson Silva vs Patrick Cote
WW Bout: Thiago Alves vs Diego Sanchez
LW Bout: Sean Sherk vs Tyson Griffin

Three massive fights there, with Alves/Sanchez being the one I'm most excited about. Fab Werdum, Thales Leites and Goran Reljic are also on the card, as well as a last chance fight between Josh Burkman and Pete Sell.

Add in Affliction and DREAM 6 and it's a pretty exciting time to be an MMA fan.

The next WEC event in a few weeks should be great too, Faber vs Brown, Filho vs Sonnen and Pulver vs Garcia all on the card.

It's looking likely that Florian vs Stevenson and Lesnar vs Kongo will happen in November.

Aussie Brad Morris is dropping to LHW at the Fight Night event to take on newcomer Jason Brilz.

Magnum

That's a good move for Brad, he was overpowered at HW and it showed fighting Cain Valasquez (who will be a star one day IMO)

Lesnar should fight gonzaga, not sure what Kongo can offer Lesnar, it will be another blanket-a-thon random hammer fist decision IMO.

Also looking forward to Carneiro / Chonan too.
