View Full Version : Teams of Umpires

I would like to see the umpires in teams that stay together instead of the mixture of different umps ruling with different umps every week.
Maybe teams of 4, 1 senior, 2 with less experience and a rookie. (3 on-feild, 1 reserve) Each team would train and learn off each other and after a few months should be seeing the game together and not working as individuals like we see today.
Each team to be given a score after each game and their tally added each week with the highest teams to ref finals which will come with a financial bonus and something to strive for.

SURPRISINGLY...... i like that.
Don't see a problem with that. Would encourage fair umpiring as well, with certain penalties for bad decisions perhaps.

But then they cant drop badumpires, instead have to drop the entire team?
they could drop one umpire back to the VFL and elevate another in his place, but essentially the team stays the same.
i am cautiously supportive of the idea.

Is a brilliant idea, having personal experience umpiring in many different leagues, juniors, seniors, vets u do have to adjust to the bloke ur umpiring with.
The main problem we have with umpiring is inconsistency, well if ur umpiring with the same few blokes every week it gives more of a chance to get consistency in the group.
is anyone going to e-mail the AFL and try and get the idea out?
I think if we can get a substantial ammount of letters entailing the same or similar ideas, it may get looked at.

Damn TT was on to my idea, really think this could work, you could build consistency in a team. However one thing that could happen be it a positive or a negative is a particular team gets a reputation as being hot on certain decisions ie. holding the ball and this could mean games are umpired differently (not that there not already but at the moment there is no pattern to the madness).
If you look through the appointments that piefan makes available each week, the AFL already do that - for a few matches in a row, the same guys umpire together.

i am cautiously supportive of the idea.
Ditto, with the emphasis on "cautiously"

I really think this idea has merit.
The umpires could get use to working with each other as a team and provide alot more consistant calls.
Really worth while exploring this.

This is really a good idea. Definitely contact the AFL TT :)

I can understand where you're coming from, but this would be something that coaching staff and leadership groups at clubs would be able to cotton onto, and make their players aware of.
I don't think it would be an outlandishly bad thing.
