Just looking at that list, I was certain that Hocking and Rama only got 1 year deals.

Could be wrong.

Blinder of a game from Gussy on Saturday against the Pies.

Very happy that he has come good. :)

He's definitaly a confidence player, and I think the trust shown by Knighta has given him the confidence to step up and show us what he's got. He looks like a different player now to last year/early this year. Onya Gus. :thumbsu:

Has that little bit of class that he's been teasing us with but has been pretty consistent throughout the middle part of this year.

Challenge is to push on from here. He's definately got enough footy smarts and skills to become a gun of the game.

When he came onto the scene, everyone loved the way he would throw himself in for the ball, with no respect to his own wellbeing.

He had a quiet start to last season and people dropped him like a hot potato, which was disappointing.

Numerous people on this forum named him as someone who was very much tradable, again, disappointing.

He has taken just as long as most others to find their feet in the game, and I believe he has now found his niche.

Gotta get him signed!

Sadly, that's what happens when guys start playing regularly in the first or second season.

They've still got plenty of physical and mental development ahead of them, yet people's expectations get accelerated when they really shouldn't.

When they stagnate a little bit in that time, all of a sudden you've got a queue of people saying he's played 50 games and shown nothing whilst the guy whose the same age and has played 10 games and showed some positive signs without dominating is heralded a future champion.

Patience is a quality held be few, especially in regard to football.

I have to admit that he's making me eat humble pie.

I thought he'd be too small and too slow but somehow he's found a yard and he's found some strength and size to compete.

Never doubted his courage and commitment and if he can iron out some of his kicking then he'd be a real bonus.

I'm still not sold on him playing a midfield role and when Davey gets back next year I'm not quite sure where he'll fit as I see the forward options being Lloyd, Lucas + Neagle or Gumby as talls and Davey, Jetta, McPhee as the smalls.

Well i do not know how you can say he does not have a spot in the side in front of Jetta. Monfries output has been miles ahead.

The way he's playing you can't deny that he's best 22 right now and would get a game in front of most.

For balance and structure though I reckon our side would be best served with Jetta and Davey running around up forward.

I reckon Jetta is one pre season away from making a real impact in this league.

It's a good problem to have these days.

monfries and leroy have different roles. gus has done really well in shutting down the opposition's quarterbacks", whilst leroy's pressure has been quite valuable even when he isn't touching the ball.

both are in are best 22 at the moment, but gus has been much more productive then leory over the past 2 months. thats not to say that leroy hasn't been contributing

Great effort to finish sixth in the B&F having started the season outside of the Best 22.

Came on in leaps and bounds this year. Look forward to seeing him across half forward again in 2009.

Hear hear,

Great to see him come on this year and hopefully will get better again next year. Starting to look as if he feels like he belongs out there.

How come 6th is a great effort for one, but 10th for a guy who has played a year less is nothing to hang your hat on because we had such a poor year?

Seems a little subjective.

Our poor mans Paul Chapman.

To finish 6th is a sad reflection on our side.

Come off it kelvin, with the number of injuries, people who played most of the year were always going to finish highly.

Great second half of the season, and I look forward to Gus making that step up to A grader next year.:thumbsu:

He will never be A grade just an Average servicable player who when we are next playing finals may not fit in.

Is it that hard to give someone credit?

He had a crap start to the season and then he turned himself around magnificently with some truly commanding performances.

Deserved to be where he was in the B+F injuries or no injuries

You're just not getting it.

Monfries showed that he's got the ability to be a game breaker and play a number of rolls. He showed dramatic improvement this year as a player of far less physical stature than Slattery.

Monfries could in 3 or 4 years be a key member of a premiership side because of his ability to win the ball, takes marks inside 50, kick goals and create something out of nothing.

He is still a little inconsistant but at least he's on the up and improving in this area.

Not forgetting, if you couldn't finish in the top nine or ten having played most games this year at Essendon, you've had an ordinary year at best.

I hate to make you look silly again, but they finished 7 votes apart.

Monfries has a year experience on him.

7 votes, that's one good game different.

You're not making me look silly at all. You're just disregarding all my comments about why I'm happy with Monfries position at the club as oposed to Slattery.

Go and have a coffee and think about why we have been such a rubbish side for so long and if you're capable of coming back with anything objective whatsoever, then put it forward. Otherwise, stop just blindly supporting every player as if they are the massiah.

You might want to have a look at the Atkinson thread on the main board, on my comments on Bachar Houli...

He might get a run in there here and there but there many better options than Gus.

Better suited to the small, defensive forward role.

Better suited to the small, defensive forward role.

Yep, I agree.

He's also good at finding space, especially running back inside the forward 50.

I still think he needs to be kicking 25 goals a year, modestly.

The job he did on Heath Shaw late in the year was perfect for him.

Gus came to Essendon with obvious skills/talent, he may have got a few cheap games along the way. He will make himself a footballer by sheer force of will. I love the boy and hope one day that he can take a grab on the run without falling to ground/ or being pummelled in the process.
Coming along beautifully.
