View Full Version : All the TV ratings for every AFL Foxtel game played so far this year. Interesting figures.

I thought it would be interesting to look at the ratings for all the Foxtel AFL and NRL games so far this year to see how they have been going on Foxtel, given that Foxtel has become a much bigger part of the AFL landscape in 2007. There are many variables of course. Some Foxtel NRL games are delayed which affects ratings. Some AFL games are broadcast simultaneously on free-to-air, and there is a bigger take up of Pay-TV in the NRL dominated states than elsewhere. Also, all four AFL Foxtel games each week overlap with free-to-air, either in full (like Saturdays) or a partial overlap (the Sunday games)

But all that aside, here are the Pay-TV ratings for ALL available AFL and NRL games for the 2007 season so far to the end of last week. The only dates I don’t have available are the Pay-TV ratings for week 23, so if anyone has them that would be much appreciated. I also don’t have the ratings for week 14, except for the 212,000 Carlton-Richmond game, which is the only game I have from week 14. AFL games are in bold

AVERAGE AFL GAME – 132,000
AVERAGE NRL GAME - 146,000

I think the AFL would be happy with those figures.

Average AFL Foxtel non Sunday twlight game - 121,000
Average AFL Foxtel Sunday twilight game - 162,000

Sunday twilight games are 34% higher than all other Foxtel AFL games.

The NRL's equivalent (Monday night) averages 174,000 compared to the average non Monday night game of 139,000.

Monday night NRL games are 25% higher than all other Foxtel NRL games.

I don't know whether that indicates, that in an "all things being equal world" Sunday evening from 5-8 is probably a better rating sport timeslot than Monday evening at 7pm, taking into account the percentage increases.

All NRL macthes on Fox have exclusive timeslots, i.e there's no other NRL match on FTA up against it.

Generally only 1 AFL match a round has this exclusivity - the ST match. That's why it rates much better.

And even that ST match overlaps with the 3-6 delayed game on Channel 7, so none of the Foxtel AFL games have total exclusivity. I reckon the twlight games should start at 6:10pm not 5:10pm.

Some NRL games are on at the same time at 7:30 on Saturday nights meaning one is delayed 2 hours later, so all time slots for ther NRL (at the grounds) are not exclusive, but on TV they are.

Pretty pisspoor effort by NRL not to be dominating the top 5 of that list given that their MNF games are in primetime where there is a much higher possible audience.

Pay Tv figures for this week were a bit lower for the AFL. I'll incorporate them into the main page. The West Coast-Port match was on free-to-air in both WA and SA it should be noted. And in the other states it was up against the blockbuster Coll-Gee match on free-to-air. Melb v Bris was free-to-air in Brisbane, and in competition with the Ess-Bulldogs game on free-to-air at the same time everywhere else.

Syd vs Freo is one of the better 1pm ratings for Foxtel. I havn't broken down the ratings for the 4 timeslots but I'm pretty sure the Sunday 1pm game is the lowest average rating of the 4, with Sunday twilight the highest.

5 city.

With Sydney easily having the highest subscriber numbers.

I haven't got the exact figures but Melbourne is well behind Sydney in subscribers to Pay tv, and WA and SA it is very low.

Over the next few years we should see increases in pay-tv subscribers in the southern states and W.A.

There is little point in counting regionals. All through history the 5 capital city ratio of ratings, is almost exactly the same as the city+regional ratios'.

Thats why these ratings agencies dont always bother with regionals. Adding them doesnt change the result, other than absolute numbers which can be projected from city ratings anyway.

I think they would be basically equal. Regional Victoria would be about 1.5 million, though - I am sure that would have to be taken into account also.

I think they would be basically equal. Regional Victoria would be about 1.5 million, though - I am sure that would have to be taken into account also.

Not really. Unlike the socalled southern states, NSW and Qld are very much decentralised ie. people DO live outside the capital.

According to the Aug 2006 Census data:

Tasmania: 476,481
Reg Victoria: 1,339,831
Reg SA: 408,498
Reg WA: 514,010

2,738,820

Reg NSW: 2,729,987
Reg Qld: 2,141,401

4,871,388

Now I left out the ACT because some here were likely to sook about it, but it is in a TV sense officially counted as part of Reg NSW (Southern NSW to be exact) as it recieves its feeds from SNSW networks rather than its own capital city feed that the 5 majors gets. So in reality, that final figure would read 5,194,444.

Anyone who says the regionals mean nothing when trying when comparing the ratings for the 2 sports is deluded.

Of course the regionals mean something. If they are looked at on their own merit. You cannot simply add those figures with the capital city figures due to the overlap between the two.

Btw- the overlap on FTA for Qld is supposedly over 1million, this could be why they don't count the regionals, not very accurate.
