View Full Version : The Use Josh Kennedy
The use of Josh Kennedy has been a disgrace. Pagan has butchered Josh kennedy. He was recruited as CHF NOT a ruckman. He's confidence is shot FFS play the kid up forward for 4 quarters or leave at the Bullants so he can develop.
no yawn here, i don't mind reading it again. OP is correct.
we all know that JK is being played in the wrong spot - he is not a ruckman.
What can we do? As long as Pagan continues to play him in the wrong position, he will stagnate, and struggle to make an impact.
It's a shame to see a top10 draft pick be wasted this way - JK needs the chance to develop as the footballer he was when drafted

What does "out of position mean"? I thought all players played where the match committee and the coach need them to play. I think that you will find that all players at all clubs are played "out of position" at some time.
Carlton don't have a ruckman, so what do you suggest? Play Setanta there for the whole game? But then he would be out of position since he is a full back.
Kenedy is going just fine. He did some nice things against the Swans and his runs in the ruck are not hurting him - just got to pray that he does not injure himself.....

Do we have much of a choice but to use him in the ruck? He's not doing much up forward neither, but persistance pays off.

Josh Kennedy is going to be a champ.
People like you are the ones knocking him now but when he becomes a powerhouse CHF saying "I knew he would be a star all along"
He is not even 20 years old and played 19 games of AFL football, what did you expect?

You are just a jerk arent you mate. No effing idea.
i don't understand how our supporters think at times, they expect 20 year olds who have barely played over 20 games at AFL level, to be winning us games.

Joshy's still young and its so stupid that people think that he's gonna be a legend from game 1. Give the kid time and he will shock a few people. I guarantee it.

he will be a champ.. but his never going to be a ruckmen
I think we all agree Kennedy isn't a ruckman. And there's a lot of Quentin Lynch about him - he's an absolute unit, but doesn't quite get to enough contests to be an effective forward, and will take a few more years to develop to that point. I think he'll be handy in future though
The question is, what to do with him in the mean-time. I still think, regardless of our ruck stocks, he shouldn't be played there. I think he should play out of the goal square as a standing, overhead marking forward, where he has less room to work and can draw opponents away from Fev. But more importantly, for someone as young and inexperienced as he is, I worry about the toll the ruck will take on his body. He doesn't have the technique, and is undersized - and we've seen what happens to undersized ruckmen with poor technique, whose only option is to crash and bash bigger players. They get injured, a la Cloke, McLaren and co.

Kennedy has always relied on his marking a lot. He is not a link type tall who will run and carry he ball. He is the type who will mark it or bring the ball to ground. but his hands have not been so good this year and he is not hitting the contest with as much force as he normally does.
He is looking around and seeing if he is in the weay of others. The coach needs to sit him down and just tell him to hit the ball with everything he has. Go for everything and lead and lead and run himself into the ground. Put your hand up and come off for a quick spell and then back into it.
Not to lead to far up the ground. But to try and stay in the 50m arc when he can. But he should be judged on the amount of times he provides a contest and forces the ball to ground. Then its up to Betts and a few of the midfielders to be front and square and either feed it out or lock it down.
The injury to Hartlett should mean Kennedy plays the rest of the year and he needs more game time and need to hit the ball like he did last year. He will open up some paths and have a few defenders wondering where he is. Thats his job for the rest of the year. Not possessions or goals. Take the pressure off and keep the game simple for a young man who needs a bit of nurturing.

I still have faith that JK will make the grade. I would like to see him have a defined role, max game time in the forward line.
Hopefully he is gaining some knowledge of what is required in AFL in the games he is playing, irrespective of position.
My main concern with him is 'going to ground'. Watching the game on Sunday the amount of time he went to ground after a contest was really concerning. This is something I've obseved previously but have decided not to post until now.
The 'keeping of feet' is vital to remain in the contest and is a facet of his game he needs to concentrate on.
Again I believe he will succeed and be a CHF to be proud of, but he needs to do a bit more work over the pre season. He is only youngand the bigger guys can take a bit more time.
i think Kennedy, being a future CHF, needs to adjust the game and read the play at a higher level. As such i think playing him in spurts in the ruck is a justifiable move. He's learning to judge the ball, read the play and, most importantly, use his body effectivly.
The kid's ability is clear and his performances in the VFL show he can play well at that level. He needs to adjust to the higher standard. I think getting him near the ball is a wise move. I'd keep this up for another week or two, then give him a month at CHB then play him the last few in the forward line.
The kid is still 2-3 years of being a KPP with influence, let him learn the game rather than learn a single position.

What about for this weeks team:
B Thornton O'hAilpin Bannister
HB Scotland Waite Houlihan
C Walker Carrazzo Simpson
HF Fisher Kennedy Wiggins
F Betts Fevola Lappin
R Ackland Murphy Koutoufides
I (from) Gibbs Bentick Bower Young Grigg Blackwell Russell
IN: Ackland, Grigg, Blackwell, Russell
OUT: Hartlett (Hamstring)
Key changes in bold for Kennedy to have a fair crack in the forward line.
O'hAilpin back to fullback (hence Ackland back in to ruck), Waite to CHB where he can play well and give Kennedy a shot at CHF.
Everyone has been raving about the Tomahawk, and what has he done???
He played 1 or 2 good games, and one was against US, if Kennedy was playing against our defence he'd kick 4+ a game too.
Kennedy has improved, one thing about him rucking it gives him that ability when he's a full time forward to be able to know how to ruck in forward ball-ups and throw ins. Not strange to see a taller forward doing some ruck work, and this rucking at least is a bit of a learning curve for him. The same can be applied to Setanta to be able to be a relief backline ruckman.
Kennedy will come good, he's getting there. When he's 22 you'll all be yelling JK!
Not once have i seen pagan play this kid one out in the
goalsquare against he's opponent when he was struggling a
bit at half forward. He is a strong boy one on one he can beat
any third best defender which is what he gets when he plays
forward!

Round 1 against Richmond, played a bit from the square.
It's a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. We have no rucks.

My point exactly a BIT. Thats what pagan does trys things a bit
then never to be seen!

I try & look for players from other teams who JK may be a similar player too.
I'm hoping he develops into a Cameron Mooney, I'm sure it took Mooney quite a few years to develop.(if anyone can be bothered on getting his games played in first 3 years, would be interesting).
How about Drew Petrie he's not oustanding but is now a very good AFL player. How many years did it take him to develop.
Probably no co-incidence that both those players are firing in a team that is firing.
I'm not sure about trading Fev, but 2008 draft looks to be strong, maybe trade Fev after next season.

JK should be playing CHF or CHB. Given the opportunity he will develop into a fine KPP. We need to be really careful here with JK. I see a lot of qualities in him unlike Luke Livingston.

Whatever use is made of Josh Kennedy, it has to be done CONSISTENTLY. Not half a quarter here, five minutes there. Give him a forward role that he thinks he can do, assure him of four (or close to four) quarters of senior footy and see how he goes. That deadhead Pagan wouldnt have the first clue about what to do with the kid, and neither would Mitchell, so the poor bastard is in no-man's land until next year at least.

Well i am willing to be proven wrong i just don't think he will be as good as people say he will be. In the games he is played this season i haven't seen many signs that he is going to be a star. Leunberger has already showed more than Kennedy. Why didnt we take Leunberger with the 1st pick?

Averaging half a possession more than Petrie, and 2 more than Mooney at the same stage in their careers.

I'd love to see JK played at CHF only but unfortunately we don't have that luxury because our number one ruckman is out injured and our number 2 ruckman is struggling for form.
Josh has been competitive in the ruck and as long as this continues, what's the harm in adding another string to his bow?

No, you're right. Kennedy hasn't really shown anything. Let's be honest. If he was playing for another club we'd all be saying how they screwed up.
The way I see, he's a long way off being a consistent performer at his stage, and whatever qualities he had as a junior, I'm not seeing it. Yes he's big, but he's a poor mark, poor kick, and rather slow. Power fowards like him shouldn't be overunning the ball either.
He needs to go back to the Magoos and stay there. He can come back, not when he's found form, but when he's a better player all-round.

If he was playing for another club he wouldn't be playing at CHF (the hardest position to play). He wouldn't have the oppositions best defender on him. He wouldn't be under so much pressure each week from supporters who expect him to take 5 contested marks a game after only playing a handful of games.
I'm not sure what you guys expect from him. He's only 19 years old. Name me one player who has dominated the AFL when they're only 19. Just lay off the kids and give them some time to develop.
I'm glad you guys aren't in controil of our football club. If someone didn't play a great game in their first 10 attempts you'd have them delisted.

I was a fan of JK, but the last few weeks I have found myself shutting my eyes everytime he goes near it. But then when he does something okay, I feel relieved that it was just one minor thing done good to help him do one major thing one day.... like a big pack mark or something.
Fingers crossed he can play forward one game this year, there are still a few games left. Hopefully he can play all those in the seniors and at least one up forward and maybe he can kick 3 or 4 goals to give us some real hope and him some real confidence!
