View Full Version : Have the VAFA lost it's aura regarding representative football?

Taking into consideration that the Under 23's lost to South Australia by 7 goals-a match in the past the VAFA would've won by 10 goals;a loss to the Queensland team in the Under 19s at Sportscover Arena; losing to Vic Country by 1 point (unlucky), is it fair to say the VAFA have lost the aura of invincibilty regarding state football. What does the VAFA have to do to regain the aura of invincibilty that made the VAFA the no.1 football competition outside the VFL? Is it time for the VAFA to put these two concepts into effect:North v South; or Section of Origin, to help players get ready for state or rep football?

I really dont think it is of great importance. It means very little to many. The whole Big V thing died with the AFL and the Ammos really are flogging a dead horse in many ways. The Ammos is great for a thousand reasons. Giving a toss about where others believe we fit in is of little importance. You wouldn't see Ammos supporters jumping on others sites telling them they have a crap comp. But it is fun to watch others on ours. Jealousy is a curse.

I disagree that you think they are flogging a dead horse.
I think the Big V in the Ammos means a lot to a lot of players and Umpires. The honour that goes with wearing the jumper is something that most players would give their left arm to have a shot at doing and I rekon Umpiring the game to those blokes would be as special as doing the A Grade GF.
I think the luster is still there in my opinion not matter what part of Rep Football you are talking about ...

From where I sit (and I don't know if everyone would agree with me or not), the VAFA state/representative squads isn't as strong as it used to be. In the '80's, there was the likes of Russell Barnes, Bruno Conti, Robbie Fuller and others who totally dominated state football in that era.Now the teams are not quite as invincible or strong as the VAFA selectors thought they were. Also the rep fixtures doesn't have the same sort of appeal as it used to be. Most players dominate at club level, but at state level they are found wanting, and they don't bring their club form over to the state game.

I think if you went there you are more entitled to comment. The u19 side lost to an u21 Qld side. Those boys who represented on Sunday will have great memories. My feel is the VAFA officials see these games as the pinnacle for VAFA footballers and umpires, i would say the rivalry for bragging rights was not unsimilar to NSW and QLD in Rugby League. From a club perspective you are first and foremost proud of your players gaining selection, a close second is the worry of injury which has basically been inherited by the approach of AFL clubs to state of origin. I only seen the first quarter on Sunday of the seniors and certainly did not want to leave, next time i will be staying wherever the game is played as i seen a great advertisement for our great game. These blokes play football at a terrific level and can enjoy a normal life outside of football, (have a beer, eat Red Rooster) unlike our AFL stars.

Clearly an uneducated comment from someone who's never had the honour of representing.

Incorrect Mr Dribble. Clearly my opinion just differs from yours. I know plenty of folk who had no desire to play or in any way be involved with the VAFA this weekend. None at all. A weekend away at the snow and on the pi$$ was what many were after. Each to their own. Wear your honour with pride son.
