View Full Version : Brad Miller
Just wondering what you guys think of Brad Miller hes only young (24) and he was taken 2001 National AFL Draft 4th round selection (Melbourne) No 55 overall.
I was just reading the paper and it says "not all of Byron Pickett, Daniel Ward, Clint Bizzell, Ben Holland, Mark Jamar, Nathan Brown and Brad Miller will survive" i was thinking maybe Carlton should try and pick him up , i think he will be a handy player :thumbsu:
what are your thoughts ?

Has he had a bad year?
I'd have thought he was the best of that list by a mile.

He has been very disappointing for Melbourne this year, I don't think he is the answer at all. We don't need him as KPP forward, our forward line is fairly stacked right now. In terms of KPP backmen it appears we are light on at the moment but I think Mark Austin will step up and be a very very good player for us down back in the coming years. If we were to pick up a player of around the 23-24 year-old mark, I'd prefer it to be a ball-winning midfielder.

hack .. ?
he is far from it . He can play both up foward and upfront. I believe we should have a punt on him. Getting him will allow jarrad waite to play upfoward full time. I think its worth it !

Teague, Bannister, Gallagher, Eccles, Mansfield, O'Rielly, McGrath, Smith, Clarke, McKernan, Johnson, Morrell, Miller etc.
Do i need to say any more.
By the way, I can add more names but I don't want to break my keyboard.

well 2 of them won B & F's
anyway, i would love to have Brad Miller at CHB if it came cheaply. Gee, i see so much KP talent ready for seniors at the moment.....

Those 2 b & f's came from quick fixes. Enough quick fix players. Develop Kennedy, Hartlett etc. Miller will just take the spot of one of the younger guys.
If we picked up miller and he won the b & f in 2008, but then he dies away and play at the bullants like teague and mckernan, would we consider it a great recruit?NO!
One best and fairest doesn't mean it was a good pick up.

i didn't say it was. That wasn't the main the main point at all. I can't beleive you think every bloke in the Bullants are going to be developed into good senior players. I can't see Miller taking Kennedy's spot. Exactly what is Kennedy's spot. Would have thought CHF, but i don't see him there too much. Hartlett? You may be waiting a while. For a late draft pick i'd be happy to see Miller come straight into CHB
i think we would be able to pick him up cheap. was pick 55 overall, probably be able to pick him up with a 4th round or 5th round draft pick. I beleieve that would be a veryu handy pick up

He's not a defenders @rsehole.
I rate him as a pretty good CHF, an Hansen type player, but we already have enough of them.

Watch him closely - he is no good. I highly, highly, doubt he'd be in any top 8 teams 22.
if we are willing to take punts on these duds like Ackland why not take a punt on somebody who has shown more in Miller. a 3 year contract .. pfft .

Dont rate Miller at all. The reputation he has of being a hard-nut is all he seems to be able to hang his hat on.
Hard is good, but its nothing without on-field performance.

I would take ALL of those players if they were delisted, with the possible exception of Ben Holland.
All are tough, proud footballers who could add a bit of senior experience to our list and patch up some glaring holes. Give the young guys a bit of protection and a bit of leadership, if only for a year or 2. Those guys aren't like Gallagher or Eccles- failed players from other teams - they're more in the mould of McKernan, Teague et al. They might be past their prime, but they're better than what we have, and if they fill a gap, then why not.
Of that list, I'd target Miller, Pickett, Jamar, and Ward if pushed though.

For the love of god. This recruiting policy would send us down the hole and never to rise again. I can't believe what i have just read.

If we could get him that cheaply I would, but i'm not so sure the Demons would take that as compensation for trading Miller.

I'm extremely bloody thankful that you are not a part of the Carlton recruiting dept. We don't need a repeat of the retread influx of 2003. NO THANX!

I'd rather see the likes of Austin, Hartlett etc. developed as our key defenders.
Miller is an average defender, and he is an average forward. No thanks.

If you want to get a proper opinion on Brad Miller just ask some Melbourne supporters. He is fast becoming Melbourne's equivalent of Mark Bolton in their eyes. I don't think there are many Melbourne supporters who would be sorry to see Miller go, but let Essendon recruit him, he would fit in beautifully at the Bendigo Bombers with Richie Cole, Chris Heffernan, Campo, Courtney Johns etc.

The thing about Miller is that he is very average for 87 quarters of footy in the regular season, and only plays really well for one quarter or half. That quarter or half always comes at the end of the season, and has people really looking forward to his development, only to be bitterly disappointed the next week.
Miller isn't good. His natural position is as a forward, but he doesn't kick nearly enough goals to be a real worry for the opposition. He takes a lot of marks and presents very well, but that's really about it. Besides, we don't need another forward.
As a defender he is even more ordinary. Looks completely out of place down back-again, an average defender is not what we need.

There's a huge difference between what I proposed above and the 'retread' influx of 2003. In 2003, we tried to restock a list devoid of young, talented players, with delisted players who were just entering their primes (23-24 yo). Thats the age bracket you build your team around, and we tried to make the core of our team out of 'retreads'.
What I'm proposing is different. We have a core group of players entering their primes - Waite, Carazzo, Simpson, Thornton, Walker, Scotland, etc. We also have a talented group of young prospects who will fill up a number of spots on the list, but who aren't quite ready yet - Murphy, Gibbs, Grigg, Kennedy and whoever we get next draft. What we lack is veterans, who have experience and leadership skills, tougher bodies and do the little things that help you win. Not only that, they protect our young guys physically, and teach them the ropes. T
he Melbourne players listed there are mostly veterans, rather than failed youngsters. The only exception is Jamar, who seems a handy backup ruckman and fills an obvious need. Pickett and Bizzell are both tough, veteran defenders - something we sorely lack. Ward is a bit younger, but same thing applies. If all those players were available, I'd certainly look at bringing in those guys, although I'm not a huge fan of Bizzell.
You can't just build a list around young players - you have to have some veterans. And if you can get them cheap, then why not? Remember, the 'retread' policy in 2003 pushed us to our best finish in 6 years - the real problem wasn't that policy, it was the terrible drafting before that

Miller is probably one of the guys at Melbourne who hasn't quite turned into the player they wanted him to be. I doubt they'll trade him unless they got something decent though.
Probably a better option than Miller is Ryan Murphy from Fremantle. Plays as a key forward and is pretty impressive. Seems to be getting limited game time because of the Taz-Pav combination. IMO, carlton should look in to luring him over.

He'll be up for trade for sure I'd imagine, won't be delisted though.
Has his great days but is way too inconsistent to hold down a spot, not with Bate, Dunn and Newton all staking their claims for a spot in our forward line.
Not sure if you have anything that would interest us, 2nd or 3rd rounder?

Considering our 2nd rounder will still be in the top 20, no way.
I would consider trading a 3rd round pick as a maximum for him.

love to get him for nothing or next to it.....like a 4th 5th round. and upgrade on this year. worst case pushes our other players more for spots

I have seen bugger all football since coming to England...
Whats Jamar playing like this year...
I wonder if Melbourne would take Mclaren and Ackland as trades for him... ;)
