View Full Version : Realistic Timeframe...
What are peoples thoughts here... I know this is probably stupid but what is our realistic time frame... to win a premiership? NO... not going that far...
the top 8.... how far away are we?
What players do we need to get there, Obviously a ruck and a few backman I think we could be in the 8 in about 2-3 years?
Anyone else want to comment?

We are probably 3 seasons away from playing finals football football in all honesty.
Players like Murph and Gibbs are the ones who will spear-head our rise up the ladder and they are still years off their best.
Players like Waite and Fisher will only help us win games when our back half will match the forward line. Our defence is absolute disgrace and until it sorts itself out we will be screwed.
I would love to be winning games sooner, but we simply aren't good enough yet

I agree... 3 seasons sounds about right.
We need a couple of good hard bodied players... at least midfielder and at least one defenders. We also need a quality ruckman.
2008 could see us sneak into the finals, otherwise 2009 would be the year we should be seriously challenging.
other than the obvious that our young players will get better with more pre-seasons under their belts
IMO we are not that far away from being a consistent football side. If we can cut out the basic errors we continually make and make the most of our opportunities (kicking for goal) then we will win more games.
ATM many of our players are strugging to string together 3-4 or more solid performances in a row, both at AFL and VFL level.
So much of football is about confidence and momentum.

What we need is experience and leadership.
One more year to gain those few things. Then the next year we should squeeze into the top 8. If you take a look at this year there are probably about 4 games where if we had these 2 qualities in our side we probably could have won. That gives us about 8 or 9 wins for the year. Another peason ander the belt and you could increase that to about 12 or 13 wins. Hopefully enough to sneak us into the 8.
Therefore IMO 2009 will be the year we make the 8.:thumbsu:

We are 2-3 seasons away from playing finals football.
One thing we really lack is good experienced players. Once the likes of Waite, Fisher, Murphy, Walker etc. are between the 22-26 age bracket, we will be ready for finals.

After the salary cap debacle, I thought we were probably 10 years away from being a serious power again. I still think that is pretty close to the mark. I expect to play finals again in 2009/10 and maybe top 4 by 2012.

Walls said the penalties imposed might see us in the wilderness for 10 years. He won't be far wrong.
this year, but we missed our chance. so, next year. Top 8.

for me it depends on the draft for when we will win a premiership but 2 or 3 years till the top 8

Can change around very quickly. I'm not ruling out 2008, however 2009 is probably a realistic target.
St Kilda was on six wins wins at this stage of 2003 - they won five of the remaining 7 and made the top 4 the next season.
Hawthorn was on five wins at this stage last season - they won four of the last seven and are now sitting second on the ladder.
Things change quickly. Neither team tanked for a high draft pick - yet both made dramatic improvements, without the need of a PP.

Carlton 2007 = Hawthorn 2006

To make the finals we need depth.
We will always have injuries to key players, its a way of life in the AFL.
If Stevens, Murphy, Simpson, Carrazzo and Gibbs , and four of Fev, Waite, Fisher, O'hAiplin x 2, and Thornton play, plus one ruck from Cloke, Aisake, +unknown other play all of next year, then 2008 is not out of the question.
I.e. We need all our gun mids, most of our key experienced players and one ruck to play most of the year.
Should this happen then we may have pushed this year, and next year is not ridiculous.
To bank on it though we need depth, and that comes with time and quality recruits - 2-3 years before we are even close.
Flag 2011. We are on track. Many hurdles in between now and then.

ATM not too many, yet t/o the year King and Harley have both had injuries, N Ablett, Rooke, Prismall, Lonegran etc.
Point is they could lose one or two forwards, mids or defenders, and still field a competitive side. Maybe not quite as dominant, but very competitive.
They have depth.
Last year we lost Kouta, Fisher and Waite, Murphy, and so on.
This year Stevens out is a MASSIVE loss to our midifield, Cloke a huge loss to the rucks......and so on.
Good clubs can cover this with depth. We can't. We are not a good club.
You are right though. There is a high correlation with winning and number of players used on the list.:thumbsu:

I a;ways thought this year was out of the question and was compounded further with Stevo's injury.
I was talking to a mate (Saints Supporter) about how, where and when Carlton will improve and we both agreed it will be out of the blue. The one thing we both agreed on is this will not happen while Pagan is coach, its not that he can't coach it is the stigma that is with him at the Carlton F.C.
The future is bright, but posters who talk about depth are on the money. The key is our own Reserves Team with a focus on development of players in their best suited positions, working with the tools they have and arming them with ones they don't. This is why we have not progressed dramatically: the Club has great leadership off field and can now start developing them on.
2008 = 10-8 with a bulk of wins late in the season.
2009 = 5-2
out of harmes' way

So Richmond have a better list? You're kidding!!!!
Realistic timeframe, with Pagan = never.
New coach in 2008, 2-3 years.

As we are now ....it will be 5 years before we are competitive, not finals, competitive!
Does everyone realise we have finished bottom 2 for 4 of the last 5 seasons!
We are stagnant the way we are NOW!
We need fundamental structural change!!
