Character builds premiership teams, not just pure talent. Sydney players have excellent character and qualities (reportedly) and play for each other, play for the jumper, and love the team.
Collingwood recruit a skinny flanker with Pick 2 who was expected to go around pick 15-20. They picked someone else at 5 who was expected to go 15+ too. They both appear to have great qualities outside of the football field.
There is more to football than pure ability. I don't know how much emphasis character gets from our recruiters but teams like Collingwood and Sydney seem to do no wrong by holding it in high regard. Maybe if we have a tough selection of 5 or so choices we should seperate them almost entirely by character? We would get the same amount of talent in that player but end up with a group of quality people. People are complex, their environment and those around them have a massive influence on the results they get on the field. Richmond's culture is too heavy to carry pure talent to a flag, St Kilda for example couldn't change theirs with just pure talent.
So how highly do you think personal qualities in players should be viewed and do you think it is more important to just keep bringing in talent like most clubs do and not worry about what kind of people they are? I bring up this discussion as most of our players are described as quiet, timid types and on game day they go into their shells.
