View Full Version : Our defence over the past month
Has been a big letdown for mine. It was brilliant up until Id say about the Essendon game. Since then all confidence has been lost and they are struggling a bit as a unit
Hunter is wayy of form I feel even still. Glass needs to play FB at all times no matter who is there. Hunter is and only will ever be able to play at CHB. Brett Jones needs to get a little closer to his man. He seemed to do that last night. Waters when he runs forward he isnt tracking back quick enough. Glass probably hasnt been his brilliant self either.
Its a area for which we can improve. When Wirra returns I hope he can move back to defense till the end of the season. We need someone who can chop off passes and work of there man with more success then someone like Brett Jones who id prefer did more defending than attacking. Another problem I feel is disposal inside our defensive 50. I like the handball gameplan. I dont like it in our defensive 50. 3 times last night I counted where handballs were chopped off in our defense that led to scoring shots. Kick the thing outside the 50 before you start taking risks boys. Any thoughts?

Agree completely with the handballs inside our defensive 50m comments. It's suicide.
Our defenders seem to think they have far more time on their hands than they do. I think the old, calm head of Drew Banfield is really missing.
Cousins showed them how it's done with his 12 last quarter possessions, many of them fixing up basic defensive mistakes by players that should know better.

Agreed. Hence why id like Wirra down back again. He is one bloke who gets the ball out of their with a kick normally lace out to a teammate too. Disposal outside of 50 is killing us and we need someone with his crisp disposal back there to help out
Waters has been a little careless lately. Hunter looked his old seld last night but must back it up. Selwood better last night although his disposal is a litte unsure.
Banners retirment is a definate loss down back. Wirra should, when fit, shoulds remain in the back half. Im sure this rest he is having will be benefical to us long term.
A big test v Doggies at TD to see where we are at.

Selwood was good, he did the job his Coach asked him too by shutting Adam Goodes out of the game!!!
Hunter has seemed a little confused lately, showed glimpses of some form last night though!
Bones has again been a little down, but he did an awesome job on O'Keefe in the 2nd half last night. IMO his shut down on O'Keefe won us the game, because he was looking verrry dangerous early on!
As for Glassy...is it just me, or did he look lost without BBBBHall out there last night? No direct match up for him to really go too. Now, I think he only touched it 4 or 5 times, and I barely heard his name all night...so I dunno how to rate his game!

I rekon getting nicoski down there will help, everyone knows how good a kick he is.

Glass hasn't been at his best but hasn't been that bad. After a terrible performance in Adelaide I thought Bones was back to his best last night. Hunter has been ordinary all year... kind of like the bits and pieces allrounder in cricket who isn't really good enough at either discipline.
Our attack out of defense will be a lot better when Wirra comes back... without his prescision kicks out of the backline there's always a feeling that we'll turn it over from the kick-ins.
Hurn had the fumbles last night.

Hunter, Waters and Wirrapanda have had very ordinary seasons. Glassy and Brett jones have been sensational, our defence isn't the major issue. Our forward line is

Hunter was awesome against Adelaide a few weeks back.
It's best not to lose sight of the fact that our defense has been under unused-to pressure for quite a while now.
Now that the midfield is starting to do more than it has been doing, the defense will do better as well.
