THREE years after Adelaide dismissed Gary Ayres, here is a comparison of his last team (which had to cover a high injury count) and the Crows' side that lost to Fremantle at AAMI Stadium on Saturday. It suggests there has not been a heavy influx of new, young players.

GARY AYRES' LAST TEAM

Beat Western Bulldogs by 32 points on June 20, 2004

From that match-day 25 (including three emergencies), those who were selected - and lost - to Fremantle at the weekend (14):

B. Reilly, G. Johncock, K. McGregor, M. Mattner, M. Doughty, T. Edwards, N. Bock, S. Welsh, A. McLeod, B. Hudson, R. Shirley, S. Stevens, J. Torney and emergency L. Jericho.

Unavailable to Craig on Saturday by injury but would have played (6):

N. Bassett, B. Rutten, T. Hentschel, M. Ricciuto, R. Biglands, M. Bode.

Gone from club (5):

H. Skipworth (delisted), N. Smart (retired), F. Watts (St Kilda), M. Clarke (St Kilda), T. Stenglein (West Coast).

Unavailable to Ayres for his last Crows team but chosen by Craig against Fremantle (10):

B. Burton (groin injury), S. Thompson (at Melbourne), C. Knights (still not drafted); N. van Berlo (still not drafted), K. Massie (in SANFL), R. Douglas (still not drafted), I. Perrie (in SANFL), I. Maric (still not drafted) and emergencies B. Campbell (still not drafted), N. Gill (still not drafted).

YOUTH FACTOR

Knights - aged: 20; 28 AFL games

van Berlo - 21; 46

Douglas - 20; 13

Maric - 21; 11

Campbell - 22; 0

Average age of Ayres' last squad: 24 years and 152 days

Average age of Craig's current squad: 24 years and 126 days

Number of debutants in 2007: 1 - Jonathan Griffin (13 games)

2006 draftees to play in 2007: 0

WHAT THE CROWS BOARD SAID

THERE was a belief that Gary Ayres can't take the club's list any further, and the club will therefore be looking for a coach with a better fit, given our future needs.

-Club chief executive Steven Trigg

The only problem which makes me think this article was by Rucci was that he has missed the fact that John Hinge debuted this year meaning we actually have 2 debutants in 2007.

Obviously Rooch has been taking note of some of the points of discussion here, maybe we should get paid commission per each idea we give them for articles.

That is countered by the simple fact that for the following year we exceeded everyones expectations including his and ours. We had very few injuries so what is the problem?

We went well last year with more injuries but blooded some young players.
Whats wrong with that? I think if we had played more youngsters and we became as inconsistant as this year and didn't get to where we did by the end of the minor round, most would have been calling for NCs' head.
You play the most experienced players that you know you can rely on.

He must be related to Drummond.

I dont think a well educated journalist would have the time to come here. Surely with the high pressure of getting a good story and just having a busy life in general wouldnt allow a good journalist the time.
Im sure Rucci would come here though.

They key word is 'can't take the club's list any further'. So Neil Craig came in...took the list....improved it a bit...and took it further (2 prelims + 1 minor premiership).

Now we have to do the same again. IF Neil Craig can't do that in the clubs eyes, then I think Rucci has an article.

He does come here and has directly indicated this through some of his articles. He has referenced "internet bloggers" and even bigfooty.com.au.

thats why even though on the net it didnt have an author, but I made the assumption that is was Rucci based on the fact that there was a factual error in it.

Rucci hates that Slogan because he knows that it trumps Port Adelaide. He has gone on and on about that for years. The marketing department got that one right as well as using the term inclusive about our club. Very clever and thought out by whoever came up with using them to describe our club !!!
