THREE years after Adelaide dismissed Gary Ayres, here is a comparison of his last team (which had to cover a high injury count) and the Crows' side that lost to Fremantle at AAMI Stadium on Saturday. It suggests there has not been a heavy influx of new, young players.
GARY AYRES' LAST TEAM
Beat Western Bulldogs by 32 points on June 20, 2004
From that match-day 25 (including three emergencies), those who were selected - and lost - to Fremantle at the weekend (14):
B. Reilly, G. Johncock, K. McGregor, M. Mattner, M. Doughty, T. Edwards, N. Bock, S. Welsh, A. McLeod, B. Hudson, R. Shirley, S. Stevens, J. Torney and emergency L. Jericho.
Unavailable to Craig on Saturday by injury but would have played (6):
N. Bassett, B. Rutten, T. Hentschel, M. Ricciuto, R. Biglands, M. Bode.
Gone from club (5):
H. Skipworth (delisted), N. Smart (retired), F. Watts (St Kilda), M. Clarke (St Kilda), T. Stenglein (West Coast).
Unavailable to Ayres for his last Crows team but chosen by Craig against Fremantle (10):
B. Burton (groin injury), S. Thompson (at Melbourne), C. Knights (still not drafted); N. van Berlo (still not drafted), K. Massie (in SANFL), R. Douglas (still not drafted), I. Perrie (in SANFL), I. Maric (still not drafted) and emergencies B. Campbell (still not drafted), N. Gill (still not drafted).
YOUTH FACTOR
Knights - aged: 20; 28 AFL games
van Berlo - 21; 46
Douglas - 20; 13
Maric - 21; 11
Campbell - 22; 0
Average age of Ayres' last squad: 24 years and 152 days
Average age of Craig's current squad: 24 years and 126 days
Number of debutants in 2007: 1 - Jonathan Griffin (13 games)
2006 draftees to play in 2007: 0
WHAT THE CROWS BOARD SAID
THERE was a belief that Gary Ayres can't take the club's list any further, and the club will therefore be looking for a coach with a better fit, given our future needs.
-Club chief executive Steven Trigg
The only problem which makes me think this article was by Rucci was that he has missed the fact that John Hinge debuted this year meaning we actually have 2 debutants in 2007.
Obviously Rooch has been taking note of some of the points of discussion here, maybe we should get paid commission per each idea we give them for articles.
